- PRECAUTION FOR DISCONNECTING CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE: When disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal, initialize the following system(s) after the cable is reconnected. - TROUBLESHOOTING PRECAUTIONS When there is a malfunction with terminal contact points or part installation problems, removal and installation of the suspected parts may return the system to normal either completely or temporarily. In order to determine the malfunctioning area, be sure to check the conditions at the time the malfunction occurred, such as DTC output and Freeze Frame Data, and record it before disconnecting any connector or removing and installing parts. Since the system may be influenced by malfunctions in systems other than the VSC system, be sure to check for DTCs in other systems.
- HANDLING PRECAUTION Do not remove or install VSC parts such as the steering angle sensor or yaw rate and acceleration sensor except when required, as they need to be adjusted correctly after removal and installation. Be sure to perform preparation before work and confirmation after work is completed by following the directions in the service information when working on the VSC system. Be sure to remove and install the ECU, brake actuator assembly, sensors, etc. with the engine switch off unless it is otherwise specified in the inspection procedure. If the ECU, brake actuator assembly or a sensor has been removed and installed, it is necessary to check the system for problems after the parts have been reassembled. Check for DTCs using the Techstream. Also check that the system functions and signals received by the ECU are normal using Test Mode.
- DTC PRECAUTION Warnings for some DTCs cannot be cleared only by repairing the malfunctioning parts. If the warning is displayed after repair work, the DTC should be cleared after turning the engine switch off. NOTE: If a DTC for a malfunctioning part reappears after it was cleared, then it has been stored again. When 2 or more DTCs are detected, perform diagnosis for each DTC, one by one until the problem is identified.
- CHASSIS DYNAMOMETER PRECAUTION When testing with a 2-wheel drum tester such as a speedometer tester, combination tester for the speedometer and brakes, or chassis dynamometer, or when jacking up the front wheels and turning the wheels, perform the following procedure to enter Inspection Mode and disable the TRAC and VSC systems. NOTE: Secure the vehicle with lock chains for safety. HINT: If Inspection Mode is not used, the vehicle may unexpectedly move off the dynamometer because of TRAC and VSC operation. The VSC OFF switch (combination switch assembly) must not be used to disable TRAC and VSC operation when the vehicle is to be operated on a dynamometer. Pressing the VSC OFF switch (combination switch assembly) does not disable TRAC and VSC operation completely. Activating Inspection Mode (When Using the Techstream) Ensure that the engine switch is off and the engine is stopped. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Utility / Inspection Mode. Chassis > ABS/VSC/TRAC > Utility Tester Display Inspection Mode Check that the VSC OFF indicator light comes on and the TRAC OFF message will be displayed on the multi-information display. HINT: If the VSC OFF indicator light does not come on and the TRAC OFF message is not displayed on the multi-information display, repeat the steps. Turning the engine switch off ends Inspection Mode. Activating Inspection Mode (When not Using the Techstream) HINT: Perform steps "C" to "G" within 30 seconds. Ensure that the engine switch is off and the engine is stopped (Step "A"). Release the parking brake (Step "B"). With the brake pedal depressed, start the engine (Step "C"). While holding the brake pedal down, apply the parking brake (Step "D"). With the parking brake applied, depress and release the brake pedal twice (Step "E"). While holding the brake pedal down, release and apply the parking brake twice (Step "F"). With the parking brake applied, depress and release the brake pedal twice (Step "G"). Check that the VSC OFF indicator light comes on and the TRAC OFF message is displayed on the multi-information display (Step "H"). HINT: If the VSC OFF indicator light does not come on and the TRAC OFF message is not displayed on the multi-information display in step "H", repeat steps "A" to "H". Turning the engine switch off ends Inspection Mode.
- CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM PRECAUTIONS The CAN communication system is used for communication between the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly), steering angle sensor, yaw rate and acceleration sensor and other ECUs. If there is trouble in a CAN communication line, corresponding DTCs in the communication line are output. If any CAN communication DTCs are output, repair the malfunction, then troubleshoot the VSC system while communication is normal. In order to enable CAN communication, a specific type of wiring is used for the CAN communication lines. The wiring used for each communication line is a twisted pair of wires that have an equal length. A bypass wire should not be used because the data being transmitted will be corrupted.

CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS [04/2013 - ]
- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS HINT: A momentary interruption (open circuit) in the connectors and/or wire harness between the sensors and ECUs can be detected using the Data List function of the Techstream. Turn the engine switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Follow the directions on the Techstream to display the Data List and select areas where momentary interruption should be monitored. HINT: A momentary interruption (open circuit) cannot be detected for 3 seconds after the engine switch is turned on (IG) (initial check). If Error remains displayed for one of the items on the Techstream, check for continuity between the ECU and the item for which Error is displayed. If a momentary interruption occurs and Error is displayed on the Techstream, Error will remain displayed on the Techstream for 1 second after the circuit returns to normal. Scheme 12: CALIBRATION [04/2013 - ]
- DESCRIPTION After replacing any VSC related components or performing wheel alignment adjustment, clear and read the sensor calibration data and system information. Refer to the table below and then perform the necessary operation according to the part to be replaced in order to perform calibration. - PERFORM YAW RATE AND ACCELERATION SENSOR ZERO POINT CALIBRATION AND STORE SYSTEM INFORMATION (When Using Techstream) NOTE: Stored system information cannot be overwritten unless it is cleared. Clear the stored information and then store new system information. While obtaining the zero point, keep the vehicle stationary and do not vibrate, tilt, move, or shake it. Be sure to perform this procedure on a level surface (with an inclination of less than 0.25 degrees). While obtaining the zero point, make sure the tire pressure is as specified and the vehicle is in full contact with the ground (not lifted up or loaded). Clear the zero point calibration data and system information. NOTE: Performing the following procedure will clear the zero points of the yaw rate and acceleration sensor and system information simultaneously. Turn the engine switch off. Check that the steering wheel is centered. Apply the parking brake. Check that the shift lever is in P. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Select the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) to clear the zero point calibration data using the Techstream. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Utility / Reset Memory. Chassis > ABS/VSC/TRAC > Utility Tester Display Reset Memory Turn the engine switch off. NOTE: If the vehicle is driven after the zero point of the yaw rate and acceleration sensor and system information are cleared, DTCs will be stored. If the engine switch is turned on (IG) for more than 15 seconds with the shift lever in P after the zero point of the yaw rate and acceleration sensor has been cleared, only the zero point of the yaw rate sensor will be stored. If the vehicle is driven under these conditions, the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) will store the zero point calibration for the acceleration sensor as not being completed. The skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) will then also indicate this as a malfunction of the VSC system using the indicator light. Perform the yaw rate and acceleration sensor zero point calibration and store system information. NOTE: Performing the following procedure will perform the yaw rate and acceleration sensor zero points calibration and store system information simultaneously. Turn the engine switch off. Check that the steering wheel is centered. Apply the parking brake. Check that the shift lever is in P. NOTE: DTCs C1210 (Zero Point Calibration of Yaw Rate Sensor Undone) and C1336 (Zero Point Calibration of Acceleration Sensor Undone) will be stored if the shift lever is not in P. If a DTC is stored that indicates zero point calibration is incomplete, repeat the procedure starting at the step for clearing the zero point calibration data and system information. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Switch the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) to Test Mode using the Techstream. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Utility / Test Mode. Chassis > ABS/VSC/TRAC > Utility Tester Display Test Mode After Test Mode has been entered, keep the vehicle stationary on a level surface for 5 seconds or more. Check that the slip indicator light comes on for several seconds and then blinks in the Test Mode pattern. HINT: If the slip indicator light does not blink, perform zero point calibration again. Zero point calibration is performed only once after the system enters Test Mode. Calibration cannot be performed again until the stored data is cleared. Turn the engine switch off and disconnect the Techstream.
- PERFORM YAW RATE AND ACCELERATION SENSOR ZERO POINT CALIBRATION AND STORE SYSTEM INFORMATION (When Using SST Check Wire) NOTE: Stored system information cannot be overwritten unless it is cleared. Clear the stored information and then store new system information. While obtaining the zero point, keep the vehicle stationary and do not vibrate, tilt, move, or shake it. Be sure to perform this procedure on a level surface (with an inclination of less than 0.25 degrees). While obtaining the zero point, make sure the tire pressure is as specified and the vehicle is in full contact with the ground (not lifted up or loaded). NOTE: If the vehicle is driven after the zero point of the yaw rate and acceleration sensor and system information are cleared, DTCs will be stored. If the engine switch is turned on (IG) for more than 15 seconds with the shift lever in P after the zero point of the yaw rate and acceleration sensor has been cleared, only the zero point of the yaw rate sensor will be stored. If the vehicle is driven under these conditions, the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) will store the zero point calibration for the acceleration sensor as not being completed. The skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) will then also indicate this as a malfunction of the VSC system using the indicator light. Turn the engine switch off. Perform the yaw rate and acceleration sensor zero point calibration and store system information. NOTE: Performing the following procedure will perform the yaw rate and acceleration sensor zero point calibration, and also store system information simultaneously. Turn the engine switch off. Check that the steering wheel is centered. Apply the parking brake. Check that the shift lever is in P. NOTE: DTCs 36 (Zero Point Calibration of Yaw Rate Sensor Undone) and 98 (Zero Point Calibration of Acceleration Sensor Undone) will be recorded if the shift lever is not in P. If a DTC is stored that indicates zero point calibration is incomplete, repeat the procedure starting at the step for clearing the zero point calibration data and system information. Using SST, connect terminals TS and CG of the DLC3. *a Front view of DLC3 SST: 09843-18040 Turn the engine switch on (IG). After Test Mode has been entered, keep the vehicle stationary on a level surface for 5 seconds or more. Check that the slip indicator light comes on for several seconds and then blinks in the Test Mode pattern. HINT: If the slip indicator light does not blink, perform zero point calibration again. Zero point calibration is performed only once after the system enters Test Mode. Calibration cannot be performed again until the stored data is cleared. Turn the engine switch off and disconnect SST from the DLC3.

- WARNING LIGHT AND INDICATOR LIGHT INITIAL CHECK Release the parking brake. NOTE: Before releasing the parking brake, move the shift lever to P. HINT: When the parking brake is applied or the brake fluid level is low, the brake warning light comes on. (Master cylinder pressure sensor zero point calibration) NOTE: If depressing the brake pedal slowly or repeatedly, the master cylinder pressure sensor zero point calibration is not performed normally. If the lost booster pressure judgment check results are not normal, then the master cylinder pressure sensor check cannot be performed. If rechecking after the engine has started, end Test Mode, enter Test Mode again, and release vacuum in the booster by pumping the brake pedal prior to rechecking. HINT: If the lost booster pressure state is not judged to be normal, the brake warning light comes on and Test Mode DTC C1281 (Master Cylinder Pressure Sensor Output Malfunction) is stored. Master Cylinder Pressure Sensor Check Leave the vehicle in a stationary condition and release the brake pedal for 1 second or more, and quickly and continuously depress the brake pedal with a force greater than 98 N (10 kgf, 22.0 lbf) for 1 second. Check that the ABS warning light stays on for 3 seconds. HINT: Confirm that the ABS warning light comes on. While the ABS warning light stays on, continue to depress the brake pedal with a force of 98 N (10 kgf, 22.0 lbf) or more. The ABS warning light comes on for 3 seconds every time the preceding brake pedal operation is performed. Speed Sensor Check Drive the vehicle straight-ahead. Accelerate the vehicle to a speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) or more for several seconds. HINT: The sensor check may not complete if wheelspin occurs. The ABS warning light comes on immediately if a malfunction is detected during the speed sensor check. NOTE: The speed sensor check may not complete if the speed sensor check is started while turning the steering wheel or spinning the wheels. After the ABS warning light goes off, if vehicle speed exceeds 80 km/h (50 mph), a sensor check code will be stored again. Decelerate or stop the vehicle before the speed reaches 80 km/h (50 mph). Check that the ABS warning light goes off. HINT: The ABS warning light goes off when the sensor check has completed. The ABS warning light comes on immediately after a malfunction has been detected during the speed sensor check. Stop the vehicle. HINT: When the sensor check has completed, the ABS warning light goes off while the vehicle is being driven, and blinks in the Test Mode pattern while the vehicle is stopped. - FREEZE FRAME DATA Whenever an ABS DTC is detected, the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) stores the current vehicle (ECU or sensor) state as Freeze Frame Data. The skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) stores the number of times (maximum: 31) the engine switch has been turned from off to on (IG) since the last time the ABS was activated. HINT: If the vehicle is stopped or driven at a low speed (7 km/h (4.3 mph) or less), or if a DTC is detected, the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) will stop counting the number. Freeze Frame Data at the time the ABS operates: The skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) stores and updates data whenever the ABS operates. When the ECU stores data at the time a DTC is detected, the data stored during ABS operation is cleared. Freeze Frame Data at the time a DTC is detected: When the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly) stores data at the time a DTC is detected, no updates will be performed until the data is cleared.

FAIL-SAFE CHART [04/2013 - ]
- FAIL-SAFE OPERATION If there is a problem with sensor signals or actuator systems, the skid control ECU prohibits power supply to the brake actuator assembly and informs the ECM of a VSC system malfunction. The brake actuator assembly turns off the solenoids and the ECM stops its VSC control according to signals from the skid control ECU. The vehicle will operate in a manner similar to a vehicle that is not equipped with ABS, TRAC and VSC systems.
