INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT

  1. If different DTCs related to different systems that have terminal E2 as the ground terminal are output simultaneously, terminal E2 may have an open circuit.
  2. Read freeze frame data using Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air/fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction. Refer to «FREEZE FRAME DATA [08/2012 - ]»(ref-606493-S29867024832014032500000) .

Note. Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.

HINT

  1. If any DTCs other than misfire DTCs are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
  2. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
  3. If the misfire does not recur when the vehicle is brought to the workshop, reproduce the conditions stored in the ECM as freeze frame data.
  4. If the misfire still cannot be reproduced even though the conditions stored in the ECM as freeze frame data have been reproduced, one of the following factors is considered to be a possible cause of the problem: There was insufficient fuel volume in the tank. Improper fuel is used. The spark plugs have been contaminated.
  5. After finishing repairs, check the misfire counts of the cylinders (Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #6 Misfire Count).
  6. Be sure to confirm that no misfiring cylinder DTCs are set again by conducting the confirmation driving pattern after finishing repairs.
  7. For 6 cylinder engines, the ECM intentionally does not set the specific misfiring cylinder DTCs at high engine speed. If misfires occur only in high engine speed areas, only DTC P0300 is set. In the event of DTC P0300 being present, perform the following operations: Clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR [08/2012 - ]»(ref-606493-S27629753512014032500000) . Start the engine and conduct the confirmation driving pattern. Read the misfiring rates of each cylinder or DTC(s) using the Techstream. Repair the cylinder(s) that has a high misfiring rate or is indicated by the DTC. After finishing repairs, conduct the confirmation driving pattern again, in order to verify that DTC P0300 is not set.
  8. When one of Short FT #1, Long FT #1, Short FT #2 or Long FT #2 in the freeze frame data is outside the range of +/-15%, the air fuel ratio may be Rich (-15% or less) or Lean (+15% or more).
  9. When the Coolant Temp in the freeze frame data is less than 75°C (167°F), the misfires have occurred only while the engine is being warmed up.
  10. An extremely imbalanced drive wheel which causes body vibration may cause misfire DTC detection.

HINT

  1. DTCs P0327 and P0328 are for the bank 1 knock sensor circuit.
  2. DTCs P0332 and P0333 are for the bank 2 knock sensor circuit.
  3. Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*. *: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.
  4. Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
  5. HINT

  1. After performing the inspection procedure for the crankshaft position sensor, if DTC P0335 is output again, check the following items related to the VVT sensor. Installation condition of the VVT sensor Installation condition of the camshaft Connection of the VVT sensor connector
  2. If no problem is found by this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical system.
  3. Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked by using Techstream. To check, follow the operation below: Connect Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed. The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the engine revolving normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed, if the CKP sensor output voltage is insufficient.
  4. CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING

HINT

Perform the operation with the engine speeds and time durations described below prior to checking the waveforms of the A/F and HO2 sensors. This is in order to activate the sensors sufficiently to obtain the appropriate inspection results.

Scheme 145

Scheme 145: CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 [A].
  2. Start the engine and warm it up with all the accessories switched off, until the engine coolant temperature stabilizes [B].
  3. Run the engine at an engine speed of between 2500 rpm and 3000 rpm for at least 3 minutes [C].
  4. While running the engine at 3000 rpm and 2000 rpm for 2 seconds, check the waveforms of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors using the Techstream [D]. HINT: If either of the voltage outputs of either the air fuel ratio or heated oxygen sensor does not fluctuate, or either of the sensors makes a noise, the sensor may be malfunctioning. If the voltage outputs of both the sensors remain lean or rich, the air fuel ratio may be extremely lean or rich. In such cases, perform the Control the Injection Volume Active Test using the Techstream. If the three-way catalytic converter has deteriorated, the heated oxygen sensor (located behind the three-way catalytic converter) voltage output fluctuates up and down frequently, even under normal driving conditions (active air fuel ratio control is not performed).

  6. Sensor 2 refers to the sensor farthest away from the engine assembly.
