AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL

The automatic light control sensor converts the intensity of the illumination into frequency and inputs it to the anti-theft ECU. When the light control switch is set at AUTO, the signal is input to TERMINAL A of the anti-theft ECU. Through communication control of the body ECU etc., the taillights and headlights are automatically turned on or off. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .

  1. Turn On Operation - When the anti-theft ECU receives the frequency signal from the automatic light control sensor and determines that the brightness around the vehicle has decreased below a specified level, terminal TAIL and HEAD of the anti-theft ECU are controlled through communication control of the body ECU etc. As a result, the taillights and/or headlights light up as the TAIL relay and/or HEAD LP relay are turned on. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-154254-S19348081212003051200000) .
  2. Turn Off Operation - When the anti-theft ECU receives the frequency signal from the automatic light control sensor and determines that the brightness around the vehicle has exceeded a specified level, terminal TAIL and HEAD of the anti-theft ECU are controlled through communication control of the body ECU etc. As a result, the taillights and/or headlights go off as the TAIL relay and/or HEAD LP relay are turned off. DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS

The current is always flowing from the ECU-B2 fuse to terminal No. 7 of the daytime running light relay (main). When the ignition switch is turned on, the current flowing through the ECU-IG fuse flow to terminal No. 1 of the daytime running light relay (main). See WIRING DIAGRAMS .

When the engine is started, the generator signal is input from the combination meter to terminal No. 5 of the daytime running light relay (main). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . At this time, when the parking brake lever is pulled up (the parking brake switch is on), the relay is not activated and the daytime running light system does not function. When the parking brake lever is released (the parking brake switch is off), the signal is input to terminal No. 4 of the daytime running light relay (main). This activates the relay to turn on the DIMMER relay. The current flows from the battery into the MAIN fuse to DRL No. 2 fuse to DIMMER relay (point side) to H-LP L UPR fuse to terminal No. 2 of the LH headlight (high) to terminal No. 1 to terminal No. 1 of the RH headlight (high) to terminal No. 2 to terminal No. 5 of the daytime running light relay No. 3 to terminal No. 1 of the daytime running light resistor to terminal No. 2 to GROUND. The headlights light up more dimly than usual as the engine is started.

Once the daytime running light system has been activated, the headlights remain lit even though the parking brake lever is pulled up (the parking brake switch is on). Even if the engine is stopped and the generator signal is cut off with the ignition switch set at ON, the headlights remain lit. When the ignition switch is turned from ON to OFF, the daytime running light system is stopped and the headlights go off. If the engine is started with the parking brake lever released, the daytime running light system starts functioning and the headlights light up as the engine is started.

  1. Light Control Switch Set At HEAD - When the light control switch is set to the HEAD position, the signal is input to terminal No. 12 of the anti-theft ECU. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-154254-S19348081212003051200000) . This activates the anti-theft ECU and turns on the HEAD LP relay. When the signal is input to terminal No. 2 of the daytime running light main relay, the daytime running light system is deactivated and the LH and RH headlights (high) go off. At this time, the current flows from the battery into the MAIN fuse to the HEAD LP relay (point side) to the H-LP L LWR and H-LP R LWR fuses to terminal No. 2 of the LH and RH headlight control ECU to terminal No. 1 to GROUND, to turn on the headlights (low beam).
  2. Dimmer Switch Set At HIGH - When the light control switch is set to the HEAD position, the current flows from the DRL No. 1 fuse into the daytime running light relay No. 3 and No. 4 (coil side) to turn on the relay as the headlights (low beam) light up. At this time, when the dimmer switch is set to the HIGH position, the signal is input to terminal No. 8 of the daytime running light main relay. This activates the DIMMER relay to flow the current from the battery into the MAIN fuse to the DRL NO. 2 fuse to the DIMMER relay (point side) to the H-LP L UPR fuse to the LH headlight (high) to the daytime running light relay No. 4 (point side) to GROUND and the current flows from the H-LP L UPR fuse to the daytime running light relay No. 3 (point side) to the RH headlight (high) to the daytime running light relay No. 4 (point side) to GROUND, to turn on the high and low headlights and the high beam indicator light at the same time.
  3. Dimmer Switch Set At FLASH - When the dimmer switch is set to the FLASH position, the current flows from the battery into the MAIN fuse, the HEAD LP relay (coil side) to terminal No. 8 of the combination switch to terminal No. 16 to GROUND in that order to turn on the HEAD LP relay. Additionally, the signal is input to terminal No. 8 of the daytime running light main relay to activate the relay and turn on the DIMMER relay. In the same manner as the dimmer switch set at the HIGH position, the headlights (high and low) and the high beam indicator light are turned on at the same time.

HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVEL CONTROL

This system calculates changes in the illuminating angle from changes in the vehicle height and axle distance based on the information on the vehicle height detected by the height sensors installed at the front and rear of the vehicle and information on the vehicle speed and acceleration output from the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and traction system or Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) system to reversely operate the reflector by the obtained illuminating angle through actuators in order to always keep the beam axis constant. If an error occurs in this system, the headlight beam level control warning light in the combination meter lights up to warn the driver.

ILLUMINATED ENTRY SYSTEM

This system provides various functions listed below through communication control of the body ECU etc.

  1. Each relevant light lights up if any door is opened.
  2. If all the doors are closed with the ignition switch set at OFF after any door is opened, each light lights up for 15 seconds and then fades out when the time set on the timer has elapsed.
  3. If any door is unlocked from the driver or passenger side or if any door is unlocked with the unlock switch on the transmitter after all the doors are closed and locked, each light lights up for 15 seconds and then fades out when the time set on the timer has elapsed.
  4. If the ignition switch is turned to the ACC or ON position while each light is being lit by the timer, the timer lighting is cancelled and the light fades out.
  5. If all the doors are closed and locked from the driver or passenger side or with the lock switch on the transmitter while each light is being lit, the timer lighting is cancelled and the light fades out.
  6. If all the doors are closed with the ignition switch set at ACC or ON after any door is opened, the timer lighting is cancelled and the light fades out.
  7. Each light above is the interior light, ignition key cylinder light and door courtesy lights.

LIGHT AUTO TURN OFF

This system automatically turns off the taillights and/or headlights when the driver door is opened and closed to prevent the lights from remaining lit.

  1. Taillights ON - If the ignition switch is turned from ON to OFF with the taillights turn on (the light control switch is set at TAIL), the signal is input to terminal IG of the anti-theft ECU. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-154254-S19348081212003051200000) . At this time, if the driver door is opened, the signal is input from the front LH door courtesy switch to terminal DCTY of the body ECU. After that, terminal TAIL of the anti-theft ECU is controlled through communication control of the body ECU etc. to turn off the TAIL relay. As a result, the current flowing into the taillights is cut off to turn off the taillights.
  2. Taillights and Headlights ON - If the ignition switch is turned from ON to OFF with the taillights and headlights turned on (the light control switch is set at HEAD or AUTO), the signal is input to terminal IG of the anti-theft ECU. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-154254-S19348081212003051200000) . At this time, if any door is opened, the signal is input from the door courtesy switch to the body ECU. During this operation, the taillights and headlights remain lit. When all doors and the luggage door (sedan) or back door (wagon) are closed, the taillights and headlights are turned on for 30 seconds, through communication control of the body ECU etc. After the set time has elapsed, a signal is input to terminal TAIL and HEAD of the anti-theft ECU, to turn off the TAIL relay and HEAD LP relay. As a result, the current flowing into the taillights and headlights is cut off to turn off the taillights and headlights.

If any door is opened during above operation, the taillights and headlights light up for 30 seconds again, and then go off after all the doors have been closed. Additionally, if the vehicle is locked using the wireless door lock operation (lock operation) while the taillights and headlights are being turned on for 30 seconds, the taillights and headlights go off immediately.

TAILLIGHTS

When the light control switch is turned to TAIL or HEAD position, the current flows to terminal No. 3 of the light failure sensor through the TAIL fuse. When the ignition switch is turned on, the current flows from the GAUGE fuse to terminal No. 8 of the light failure sensor, and also flows through the rear lights warning light to terminal No. 4 of the light failure sensor.

Taillight Disconnection Warning

With the ignition switch on and the light control switch turned to TAIL or HEAD position, if the taillight circuit is open, the light failure sensor detects the failure by the change in current flowing from terminal No. 3 of the light failure sensor to terminal No. 9 and the warning circuit of the light failure sensor is activated. As a result, the current flows from terminal No. 4 of the light failure sensor to terminal No. 11 to GROUND and turns the rear lights warning light on, which remains on until the light control switch is turned off.

FOGLIGHT AIM

Insert a driver into the hole for aiming in the fender liner to perform aiming (A-bolt: vertical direction). (Scheme 17)

HEADLIGHT AIM

CAUTIONDisconnect the connector of the other light to avoid heat affection from the light because the outer lens of the headlight assembly is made of synthetic resin. When connecting again, take care not to make the aiming out of the adjustment.

Note. When covering the headlight, finish it within 3 minutes.

  1. Put the vehicle in the below conditions: Make sure the body around the headlight is not deformed. Park the vehicle on a level spot. Tire inflation pressure is the specified value. Height control operation completes. The driver gets into the driver's seat and puts the vehicle in a state ready for driving with a full tank. Bounce the vehicle several times.
  2. Check the headlight aiming. Prepare the thick white colored paper. Stand the paper perpendicularly and ensure the distance from it to the headlights is 9 ft., 10 in. (3 meters). Ensure that the center line of the vehicle and the paper are at a 90 degree angle and that the engine is running. (Scheme 18) Draw a horizontal line (H line) on the paper where the headlights of the vehicle are to be. (5) Draw a vertical line (V line) on the paper where the center line of the vehicle is to be. (6) Draw the vertical lines (V RH and V LH lines) on the paper where the headlights (low beam and high beam center marks) of the vehicle are to be. (7) Draw the vertical lines (V RH and V LH lines) on the paper where the headlights (low beam center marks) of the vehicle are to be. (8) Turn the headlights ON. Check that the headlights light up the paper. When the paper is not lit up properly, adjust the lights in the vertical or horizontal direction.
  3. Adjust the headlight in the vertical direction. Using adjusting bolt "A", adjust the headlight aim to within the specifications. (Scheme 19)
  4. Adjust the headlight in the horizontal direction. Using adjusting bolt "B", adjust the headlight aim to within the specifications.

AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL SENSOR CIRCUIT

  1. Connector Disconnected - Disconnect the connector from the sensor and inspect the connector on the wiring harness side. See «CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION»(ref-154254-S12255816162003051200000) . See «IDENTIFYING AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL SENSOR CIRCUIT (CONNECTOR DISCONNECTED)»(ref-154254-S06650518712003051300000) table. If the circuit is as specified, go to step 2 . If the circuit is not as specified, inspect the circuit connected to other parts. Disconnect the connector from the light and inspect the connector on the wiring harness side. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . See INSPECTING LICENSE PLATE LIGHT CIRCUIT table. If the circuit is not as specified, inspect the power source or wiring harness.

INSPECTING VANITY LIGHT CIRCUIT

AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL SENSOR

  1. Auto On Function - Turn the ignition switch ON. Turn the light control switch to AUTO. Gradually cover the top of the sensor. Check that the accessory lights and headlights turn ON.
  2. Auto Off Function - Gradually expose the sensor. Check that the headlights and accessory lights turn OFF.
  3. Lights-Off Condition - Turn the ignition switch ON. Lights auto ON: Gradually cover the top of the sensor. Verify that the lights will go out when the light control switch position is OFF or the area surrounding the sensor gets bright or when opening the driver's door while the ignition switch is OFF.
  4. Lights-On Condition - Open the driver's door while the ignition switch is OFF. Turn the light control switch to AUTO leaving the door open and cover the top of the sensor, and verify that the lights go on when the ignition switch is turned ON.

BACK-UP LIGHT SWITCH

Inspect the back-up light switch continuity. (Scheme 21) See INSPECTING BACK-UP LIGHT SWITCH CONTINUITY table. If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch. See step 1) of TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY under OVERHAUL - W55 article under MANUAL TRANSMISSION in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION.

  2. Check that no continuity exists between terminals and the switch body with the switch OFF (switch pin pushed in: closed doors).
  3. If operation is not as specified, replace the switch.

LICENSE PLATE LIGHT

Using an ohmmeter, check that continuity exists between terminals. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . If continuity is not as specified, replace the light assembly or bulb.

LIGHT CONTROL ECU (FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION)

  1. When Input Error Is Inspected - When input voltage is not within the range of operation voltage (9-16 volts), lighting of the headlight stops. As soon as the voltage comes within range, it lights up again. However, if the input voltage becomes low after lighting up, sufficient voltage is maintained until the light of the bulb goes completely off.
  2. When Output Error Is Inspected (Open Or Short), When Light Flushing Is Inspected - When an error occurs in the output voltage (open or short) or flushing symptom occurs on the bulb, lighting of the headlight stops, the condition is maintained until power is turned ON again (headlight dimmer switch OFF to ON). In this case, it cannot be judged whether lighting malfunction is caused by an output error or other reasons (fuse blown out, etc). Check that there is no error in fuse and wiring (including power source) and replace the bulb in the first place, when the error still appears, replace the light control ECU. See «HEADLIGHTS»(ref-154254-S02773777602003051300000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LIGHT

Using the ohmmeter, check that continuity exists between terminals. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . If continuity is not as specified, replace the light assembly or bulb.

REAR ROOM LIGHT SWITCH (WAGON)

Inspect the rear room light switch continuity. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . See INSPECTING REAR ROOM LIGHT SWITCH CONTINUITY table. If continuity is not as specified, replace the light assembly or bulb.

ROOM LIGHT

  1. Without Reader Sensor - Inspect the room light continuity. Disconnect the connector from the room light. Turn the room light switch ON and check that continuity exists between terminal No. 2 and body ground. (Scheme 25) Turn the room light switch to DOOR and check that continuity exists between terminals No. 1 and 2. If continuity is not as specified, replace the light assembly or bulb.
  2. With Reader Sensor - Inspect the room light continuity. Disconnect the connector from the room light. Turn the room light switch ON and check that continuity exists between terminals No. 2 and 3. (Scheme 26) Turn the room light switch to DOOR and check that continuity exists between terminals No. 1 and 3. If continuity is not as specified, replace the light assembly or bulb.

VANITY LIGHT
