Low Speed Position

With the wiper switch turned to LO position, the current flows from terminal No. 17 of the front wiper and washer switch to terminal No. 7 to terminal No. 5 of the front wiper motor to terminal No. 4 to GROUND and causes the front wiper motor to run at low speed.

High Speed Position

With the wiper switch turned to HI position, the current flows from terminal No. 17 of the front wiper and washer switch to terminal No. 8 to terminal No. 3 of the front wiper motor to terminal No. 4 to GROUND and causes the front wiper motor to run at high speed.

INT Position

With wiper switch turned to INT position, the relay operates and the current which is connected by the relay function flows from terminal No. 17 of the front wiper and washer switch to terminal No. 2 to GROUND. This flow of current operates the intermittent circuit and the current flows from terminal No. 17 of the front wiper and washer switch to terminal No. 7 to terminal No. 5 of the front wiper motor to terminal No. 4 to GROUND and operates the wiper.

The intermittent operation is controlled by the charge/discharge function of the condenser installed in the relay and the intermittent time is controlled by a time control switch to change the charging time of the condenser.

MIST Position

With wiper switch turned to MIST position, the current flows from terminal No. 17 of the front wiper and washer switch to terminal No. 7 to terminal No. 5 of the wiper motor to terminal No. 4 to GROUND and causes the wiper motor to run at low speed.

HEADLIGHT CLEANER SWITCH

To spray fluid on the headlights, push the headlight cleaner switch with the headlights on. The ignition key must be in the ON position. For headlight cleaner switch location, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS .

WASHER NOZZLE

  1. Inspect the washer nozzle. While operating the washer, check whether the upper point where the washer fluid hits the windshield and the surge area are within the range indicated by the hatched line. (Scheme 11) A - Approximately 12.32 in. (313 mm). B - Approximately 17.09 in. (434 mm). C - Approximately 11.42 in. (290 mm). D - Approximately 7.13 in. (181 mm). E - Approximately 10.63 in. (270 mm). F - Approximately 6.02 in. (153 mm). G - Approximately 11.81 in. (300 mm). H - Approximately 18.19 in. (462 mm). I - Approximately 10.55 in. (268 mm). J - Approximately 11.30 in. (287 mm). Check if the lower point where the washer fluid hits the windshield is within the range of the wiping pattern (the area of the glass which is wiped by the wiper blades).
  2. Adjust the washer nozzle. Using a tool like the one shown in the illustration, change the direction of the nozzle hole to adjust the point where washer fluid hits the windshield. (Scheme 12)

WINDSHIELD WIPER POSITION

CAUTIONTo prevent the wiper blades from being deformed, be sure to hold the connection of the wiper arm and wiper blade securely.

Note. The wiper blades retract under the hood when the wipers are turned off. In the following cases, the wipers should be shifted from the retracted position to the rest position above the hood level. When cleaning the windshield. When inspecting or replacing the wipers. When the retraction may be obstructed by snow, etc., at the bottom of the windshield. Other than the above cases, keep the wipers in the retracted position.

  1. To shift the windshield wipers from the retracted to rest position, hold the connection of the wiper arm and wiper blade and pull it upward along the windshield glass with the force of about 22 lbs. (98 N).
  2. To return the windshield wipers to the retracted position, push the connection of the wiper arm and wiper blade downward.

HEADLIGHT CLEANER MOTOR CIRCUIT

Inspect the headlight cleaner motor circuit. Disconnect the connector from the cleaner motor and inspect the connector on the wire harness side. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . See INSPECTING HEADLIGHT CLEANER MOTOR CIRCUIT table. If the circuit is not as specified, inspect the circuits connected to other parts. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .

Inspect the headlight cleaner relay circuit. Disconnect the connector from the relay and inspect the connector on the wire harness side. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . INSPECTING WIPER & WASHER SWITCH CIRCUIT

WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT

Inspect the wiper motor circuit. Disconnect the connector from the motor and inspect the connector on the wire harness side. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . See INSPECTING WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT table. INSPECTING WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT

HEADLIGHT CLEANER MOTOR

CAUTIONThis test must be performed quickly (within 20 seconds) to prevent the coil from burning out.

Inspect the headlight cleaner motor operation. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 2 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 1, check that the motor operates. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . If the operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

HEADLIGHT CLEANER RELAY

  1. Inspect the headlight cleaner relay operation.
  2. Check that no continuity exists between terminals No. 2 and No. 5. See «CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION»(ref-153118-S37884326122003031800000) .
  3. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminals No. 1 and No. 5, and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 3.
  4. Connect the negative (-) lead from the battery to terminal No. 4, and check that continuity exists between terminals No. 2 and No. 5 for 0.9-1.1 seconds, then no continuity exists.
  5. If the operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

Inspect the headlight cleaner switch continuity. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . See INSPECTING HEADLIGHT CLEANER SWITCH CONTINUITY table. If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch. See HEADLIGHT CLEANER SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

INSPECTING HEADLIGHT CLEANER SWITCH CONTINUITY

WASHER LEVEL WARNING SWITCH

WASHER MOTOR

CAUTIONThis test must be performed quickly (within 20 seconds) to prevent the coil from burning out.

Inspect the washer motor operation. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 2 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 1, check that the motor operates. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . If operation is not as specified, replace the motor.

WIPER & WASHER SWITCH

Inspect the wiper and washer switch continuity. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . See INSPECTING WIPER & WASHER SWITCH CONTINUITY table. If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch. See WIPER & WASHER SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

INSPECTING WIPER & WASHER SWITCH CONTINUITY

WIPER MOTOR

  1. Low Speed - Inspect the wiper motor operation. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 5 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 4, check that the motor operation at low speed. See «CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION»(ref-153118-S37884326122003031800000) . If operation is not as specified, replace the motor. See «WIPER MOTOR»(ref-153118-S27834210802003031800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. High Speed - Inspect the wiper motor operation. Connect the positive lead from the battery to terminal No. 3 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 4, check that the motor operates at high speed. See «CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION»(ref-153118-S37884326122003031800000) . If the operation is not as specified, replace the motor. See «WIPER MOTOR»(ref-153118-S27834210802003031800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Stopping At Stop Position - Inspect the wiper motor operation. Operate the motor at a low speed and stop the motor operation anywhere except at the stop position by disconnecting the positive (+) lead from terminal No. 5. See «CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION»(ref-153118-S37884326122003031800000) . Connect terminals No. 1 and No. 5. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 2 and negative (-) lead to terminal No. 4, check that the motor stops running at the stop position after the motor operates again. If operation is not as specified, replace the motor. See «WIPER MOTOR»(ref-153118-S27834210802003031800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
