INSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR
Pushing the switch changes the mode between AUTO and DAY. The indicator comes on when the AUTO mode is selected. The mirror surface is normal during the DAY mode. During the AUTO mode, if the mirror detects light from headlights of the vehicle behind you, the mirror surface darkens slightly to reduce the reflected light. The outside rear view mirrors also darken to reduce the reflection of the headlights of the following vehicle.
Compass
The compass indicates the direction in which the vehicle is heading. Pushing the button for longer than 3 seconds turns on or off the compass display. The compass may not show the correct direction in the following conditions
- The vehicle is stopped immediately after turning. The compass does not adjust while the vehicle is stopped.
- The ignition switch is turned off immediately after turning.
- The vehicle is on an inclined surface.
- The vehicle is in a place where the earth's magnetic field is subject to interference by artificial magnetic fields (underground parking, under a steel tower, between buildings, roof parking, near a crossing, near a large vehicle, etc.).
- The vehicle is magnetized (there is a magnet or a metal object near the inside rear view mirror).
- The battery has been disconnected.
- Any door is open.
The compass works to calibrate the direction automatically while the vehicle is in motion, if deviation is small.
POWER MIRROR SWITCH CIRCUIT
Inspect the power mirror switch circuit. See BODY CONTROL SYSTEMS article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
DRIVING POSITION MEMORY & RETURN SWITCH
Inspect the driving position memory and return switch continuity. See INSPECTING DRIVING POSITION MEMORY & RETURN SWITCH CONTINUITY table. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . If continuity is not as specified, replace the memory switch.

ELECTRO CHROMIC INNER MIRROR
Inspect the electro chromic inner mirror operation. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 1 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 4. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Connect the positive (+) lead from the voltmeter to terminal No. 2 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 3. Attach a Black-colored tape to forward sensor to prevent it from sensing. When the mode is turned to AUTO, check that indicator light lights up. Light up the mirror with an electric light and check that there is battery positive voltage and mirror surface changes bright to dark. If operation is not as specified, replace the inner mirror. See INNER REAR VIEW MIRROR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
ELECTRO CHROMIC OUTER MIRROR
Disconnect the outer mirror connector. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . On vehicles with driving position memory, connect the positive (+) lead from the dry cell battery to terminal No. 5 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 4, then check that the mirror surface changes to dark. On vehicles without driving position memory, connect the positive (+) lead from the dry cell battery to terminal No. 2 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 1, then check that the mirror surface changes to dark. Check that the mirror turns to bright after disconnecting the battery. If the operation is not as specified, replace the mirror assembly. See OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
POWER MIRROR MOTOR (W/ DRIVING POSITION MEMORY)
Inspect the mirror motor operation. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 1 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 2, and check that the mirror turns to the left side. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Reverse the polarity and check that the mirror turns to the right side. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 6 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 2, and check that the mirror turns upward. Reverse the polarity and check that the mirror turns downward. If the operation is not as specified, replace the mirror assembly. See OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
POWER MIRROR MOTOR (W/O DRIVING POSITION MEMORY)
Inspect the mirror motor operation. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 4 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 5, and check that mirror turns to the left side. See CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . Reverse the polarity and check that the mirror turns to the right side. Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal No. 6 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 5, and check that the mirror turns upward. Reverse the polarity and check that the mirror turns downward. If the operation is not as specified, replace the mirror assembly. See OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
POWER MIRROR POSITION SENSOR
Note. On vehicles with driving position memory only.
- Inspect the mirror position sensors operation. Strip off the vinyl tape of the connector and remove terminals No. 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11 from the connector housing. See «CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION»(ref-153072-S26858199822003031200000) .
- Connect a series of three 1.5 V dry cell batteries. Connect the positive (+) lead from the dry cell batteries to terminal No. 8 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 11.
- Connect the positive (+) lead from the voltmeter to terminal No. 9 and the negative (-) lead to terminal No. 11. Apply battery positive voltage to terminals No. 2 and No. 6, then check that the voltage gradually changes according to the table below while the mirror moves between the uppermost position and lowermost position. See «INSPECTING POWER MIRROR POSITION SENSORS VOLTAGE (UP & DOWN)»(ref-153072-S31945011942003031200000) table. If voltage value is not as specified, replace the motor assembly. INSPECTING POWER MIRROR POSITION SENSORS VOLTAGE (UP & DOWN) Mirror Position Voltage Lowermost 2.8-5.0 Volts Uppermost 0-1.8 Volts
- Disconnect the 4 leads of the battery and voltmeter. Connect the positive (+) lead from the voltmeter to terminal No. 10 and negative (-) lead to terminal No. 11. Apply battery positive voltage to terminals No. 1 and No. 2, then inspect that the voltage gradually changes according to the table below while the mirror moves between the left-most position and right-most position. See «INSPECTING POWER MIRROR POSITION SENSORS VOLTAGE (LEFT & RIGHT)»(ref-153072-S17706987702003031200000) table. If voltage is not as specified, replace the motor assembly.
