DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

EC Mirror Operation

The EC mirror system provides 2 types of control modes, the AUTO (if the mirror detects light from the headlights of the vehicle behind you, the mirror surface darkens slightly to reduce the reflected light) and DAY (the mirror surface is normal) modes, which can be selected using the mode select switch. In the AUTO mode, the system switches the inside rear view mirror's glare resistant and non-glare resistant functions in accordance with the difference in intensity between the surrounding and rear lights and automatically varies the reflection rate of the inside and outside rear view mirrors. (Scheme 1)

Adjust the mirror so that you just see the rear of your vehicle in the mirror. Pushing the MIRROR switch changes the mode between AUTO and DAY. see scheme 2 The indicator comes on when the AUTO mode is selected.

When the inside rear view mirror surface changes, the outside rear view mirror surfaces will also become darker.

When the ignition key is inserted and turned on, the inside rear view mirror always turns on in the AUTO mode.

When the outside air temperature is low, it may take a little longer for the mirror to darken in response to the detection of headlights.

When the mode select switch is fixed to the DAY mode, the reflection rate of the inside and outside rear view mirrors are fixed to maximum reflection (DAY mode) regardless of the intensity of the surrounding or rear light. This system, when selected to the AUTO mode, is activated only when the ignition switch is ON.
