Automatic Transaxle System: Diagnosis Kia Optima II

INSPECTION

  1. Drive the vehicle until the fluid reaches normal operating temperature [70~80°C].
  2. Place the vehicle on a level surface.
  3. Move the selector lever through all gear positions. This will fill the torque converter and the hydraulic system with fluid and move the selector lever to the "N" (Neutral) or "P" (Park) position.
  4. Before removing the oil level gauge, wipe all contaminants from around the oil level gauge. Then take out the oil level gauge and check the condition of the fluid. NOTE: If the fluid smells as if it is burning, it means that the fluid has been contaminated by fine particles from the bushes and friction materials, a transaxle overhaul may be necessary.
  5. Check that the fluid level is at the HOT mark on the oil level gauge. If the fluid level is low, add automatic transaxle fluid until the level reaches the "HOT" mark. Auto transaxle fluid: DIAMOND ATF SP-III, SK ATF SP-III Quantity: 9.5 l NOTE: Low fluid level can cause a variety of a abnormal conditions because it allows the pump to take in air along with fluid. Air trapped in the hydraulic system forms bubbles, which are compressible. Therefore, pressures will be erratic, causing delayed shifting, slipping clutches and brakes, etc. Improper filling can also raise fluid level too high. When the transaxle has too much fluid, gears churn up foam and cause the same conditions which occur with low fluid level, resulting in accelerated deterioration of automatic transaxle fluid. In either case, air bubbles can cause overheating, and fluid oxidation, which can interfere with normal valve, clutch, and brake operation. Foaming can also result in fluid escaping from the transaxle vent where it may be mistaken for a leak.
  6. Insert the oil level gauge securely NOTE: When new, automatic transmission fluid should be red. The red dye is added so the assembly plant can identify it as transmission fluid and distinguish it from engine oil or antifreeze. The red dye, which is not an indicator of fluid quality, is not permanent. As the vehicle is driven the transmission fluid will begin to look darker. The color may eventually appear light brown.

  1. Connect scantool to data link connector (DLC).
  2. Ignition "ON" & Engine "OFF".
  3. Monitor the "TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH" parameter on the scantool.
  4. Shift selector lever from "P" range to other range.
  5. Is "TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH" follow the reference data? YES : --> Fault is intermittent caused by poor contact in the sensor's and/or TCM (PCM)'s connector or was repaired and TCM (PCM) memory was not cleared. Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration or damage. Repair or replace as necessary and go to " «VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-266022-S11813001232007092700000) " procedure. no : --> Go to " «TERMINAL & CONNECTOR INSPECTION»(ref-266022-S10569080482007092700000) " procedure.

* Most of fault that happen about inhibitor switch, result from faulty shift cable adjustment or incorrect location of manual control lever and inhibitor switch. So, when DTC which related inhibitor switch or engine start defectiveness at "P" range happen, After check the shift cable adjustment or location of manual control lever and inhibitor switch, repair or replace as necessary.

TERMINAL & CONNECTOR INSPECTION

  1. Many malfunctions in the electrical system are caused by poor harness and terminals. Faults can also be caused by interference from other electrical systems, and mechanical or chemical damage.
  2. Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage.

  1. CHECK POWER TO RANGE SWITCH Disconnect "TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH" connector. Ignition "ON" & Engine "OFF". Measure voltage between terminal "8" of the sensor harness connector and chassis ground. Specifications: approx. B+ Is voltage within specifications?   1. Drain automatic transaxle fluid.
  2. Disconnect the negative terminal (B) from the battery (A).
  3. Remove the engine cover (A).
  4. After disconnecting the AFS connector (A) and removing the air cleaner upper body (B), take the air cleaner filter out of the air cleaner under body.
  5. After disconnecting the PCM connectors (B), remove the air cleaner under body (A).
  6. Remove the battery tray (A).
  7. Remove the transaxle oil cooler hoses (A) releasing the clamps.
  8. Disconnect the ground wire (A).
  9. Disconnect the connectors related to the transaxle. Disconnect the solenoid valve connector (A). Disconnect the inhibitor switch connector (A). Disconnect the input speed sensor connector (A). Disconnect the output speed sensor connector (A). Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector (A).
  10. Disconnect the control cable by removing the nut (A).
  11. After removing the front wheels and tires and lifting up the vehicle, remove the under cover (A).
  12. Drain power steering fluid. (Refer to «MECHANICAL POWER STEERING SYSTEM»(ref-266036) )
  13. Remove the pressure tube from the power steering oil pump. (Refer to «MECHANICAL POWER STEERING SYSTEM»(ref-266036) )
  14. After releasing the power steering hose clamp (A), disconnect the hose with the tube. CAUTION: Clamp or plug the power steering hose to avoid excessive fluid loss. When re-connecting, remove the clamp or hose plug and check power steering reservoir fluid level.
  15. Remove the exhaust pipe. (See «INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-265991-S33165560142007092700000) (2.4L) or «INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-265992-S08664519142007092700000) (2.7L))
  16. Remove the lower arm assembly and tie rod mounting bolts. (See «FRONT LOWER ARM»(ref-266031-S18125220142007092700000) and «CHECKING THE TIE ROD END BALL JOINT STARTING TORQUE»(ref-266029-S25828243312007092700000) )
  17. Supporting the sub frame with a jack, remove the sub frame mounting bolts. (See «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX»(ref-266036-S17580652732007092700000) )
  18. After loosening the steering column bolt and lowering a jack, remove the sub frame. (See «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX»(ref-266036-S17580652732007092700000) )
  19. Lowering the vehicle down, remove the transaxle upper mounting bolts (A).
  20. Using the SST (09200-38001), support the engine and transaxle assembly safely.
  21. Remove the transaxle insulator mounting bolt (A).
  22. Remove the starter. (See appropriate STARTING SYSTEM article)
  23. Remove the bolts (B-4EA) which connect the drive plate with the torque converter.
  24. Remove the inner shaft mounting bolts and take the drive shafts off the transaxle assembly. (See «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-266025) )
  25. After supporting the transaxle with a jack and removing the under mounting bolts (A).

Lifting up the transaxle slowly with a jack, tighten the under mounting bolts (A) TORQUE: ø 2.4L 43~55 Nm (430~550 kgf.cm, 31.3~39.8 lb-ft) - A [2EA] 43~49 Nm (430~490 kgf.cm, 31.3~35.6 lb-ft) - C [4EA] μ 2.7L 80~100 Nm (800~1000 kgf.cm, 57.9~72.3 lb-ft) - A [2EA] 40~47 Nm (400~470 kgf.cm, 29.0~34.1 lb-ft) ~ C [4EA] CAUTION: Take care not to damage the power steering hoses.
  2. Insert the drive shafts into the transaxle. (See «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-266025) )
  3. Install the inner shaft mounting bolts (2EA). (See «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-266025) ) TORQUE: 50~65 Nm (500~650 kgf.cm, 36.2~47.0 lb-ft)
  4. Apply grease on the threaded part of the bolts (B-4EA) which connect the drive plate with the torque converter and tighten them. TORQUE: 46~53 Nm (460~530 kgf.cm, 33.3~38.3 lb-ft) - B
  5. Install the starter. (See appropriate STARTING SYSTEM article)
  6. Tighten the transaxle insulator mounting bolt (A). TORQUE: 65~85 Nm (650~850 kgf.cm, 47.0~61.5 lb-ft)
  7. Tighten the transaxle upper mounting bolts (A). TORQUE: ø 2.4L 43~55 Nm (430~550 kgf.cm, 31.3~39.8 lb-ft) - A [4EA] μ 2.7L 65~85 Nm (650~850 kgf.cm, 47.0~61.5 lb-ft) - A [4EA]
  8. Lifting up the sub frame with a jack, tighten the steering column bolt. (See «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX»(ref-266036-S17580652732007092700000) )
  9. Tighten the sub frame mounting bolts. (See «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX»(ref-266036-S17580652732007092700000) )
  10. Install the lower arm assembly and the steering bar tie rod mounting bolts. (See «FRONT LOWER ARM»(ref-266031-S18125220142007092700000) and «CHECKING THE TIE ROD END BALL JOINT STARTING TORQUE»(ref-266029-S25828243312007092700000) )
  11. Install the front exhaust pipe. (See «INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-265991-S33165560142007092700000) (2.4L) or «INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-265992-S08664519142007092700000) (2.7L))
  12. Clamp the power steering hose (A).
  13. Install the under cover (A).
  14. Connect the transaxle wire harness connectors. Connect the solenoid valve connector (A). Connect the inhibitor switch connector (A). Connect the input speed sensor connector (A). Connect the output speed sensor connector (A). Connect the vehicle speed sensor connector (A).
  15. Connect the ground wire (A).
  16. Connect the control cable (A) by installing the nut.
  17. Clamp the transaxle oil cooler hoses (A).
  18. Install the battery tray (A).
  19. Install the air cleaner under body (A) and connect the PCM connectors (B).
  20. Reassemble the air cleaner filter, install the air cleaner upper body (B) and connect the air flow sensor connector (A).
  21. After installing the battery (A), connect the positive terminal (B) to the battery.
  22. Install the engine cover (A). NOTE: Refill power steering fluid and bleed the power steering system. (Refer to «MECHANICAL POWER STEERING SYSTEM»(ref-266036) ) Refill automatic transaxle fluid. (Refer to ' «SERVICE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE»(ref-266022-S33177199822007092700000) .')

Note. When replacing the automatic transaxle, reset the automatic transaxle's values by using the High-Scan Pro.

  1. Connect the Hi-Scan Pro connector to the data link connector under the crash pad and power cable to the cigar jack under the center fascia.
  2. Turn the ignition switch on and power on the Hi-Scan Pro.
  3. Select the vehicle's name.
  4. Select 'AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE'.
  5. Select 'RESETTING AUTO T/A VALUES' and perform the procedure.
  6. Perform the procedure by pressing F1 (REST).
