TROUBLE SHOOTING

ARMATURE TEST

  1. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between commutator and core. If continuity exists, replace armature. Check for continuity between commutator and shaft. If continuity exists, replace armature.
  2. Place armature on "V" blocks. Using a dial indicator, measure runout at commutator. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164136-S31366507522004072200000) . If runout is not within specification, resurface commutator or replace armature.
  3. Wipe commutator clean. Measure commutator outer diameter. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164136-S31366507522004072200000) . If commutator is at, or less than limit, replace armature. Check depth of mold between commutator segments. Replace armature if depth of mold is at or less than minimum.

MAGNETIC SWITCH PULL-IN TEST

CAUTIONTo prevent coil from burning, DO NOT apply voltage to starter assembly for more than 10 seconds.
  1. Disconnect the field coil wire from the "M" terminal of the magnetic switch.
  2. Connect a 12V battery between the "S" terminal and the "M" terminal. (Scheme 1)
  3. If the pinion moves out, then the pull-in coil is good. If it doesn't move out, replace the magnetic switch.

MAGNETIC SWITCH HOLD-IN TEST

CAUTIONTo prevent coil from burning, DO NOT apply voltage to starter assembly for more than 10 seconds.
  1. Disconnect the field coil wire from the "M" terminal of the magnetic switch.
  2. Connect a 12V battery between "S" terminal and the body.
  3. If the pinion moves out, everything is in order. If the pinion moves back and forth repeatedly, the hold-in circuit is open. Then replace the magnetic switch.

FREE RUNNING TEST

  1. Place the starter motor in a vise equipped with soft jaws and connect a fully-charged 12 volt battery to starter motor.
  2. Connect a test ammeter (100-ampere scale) and carbon pile rheostat. (Scheme 2)
  3. Connect a voltmeter (15-volt scale) across starter motor.
  4. Rotate carbon pile to the off position.
  5. Connect the battery cable from battery's negative post to the starter motor body.
  6. Adjust carbon pile until battery voltage shown on the voltmeter reads 11 volts.
  7. Confirm that amperage is 90 amps or less at 2800 RPM or less, and that starter motor turns smoothly and freely.

MAGNETIC SWITCH RETURN TEST

CAUTIONTo prevent coil from burning, DO NOT apply voltage to starter assembly for more than 10 seconds.
  1. Disconnect field coil wire from the "M" terminal of the magnetic switch.
  2. Connect a 12-volt battery between "M" terminal and the body.
  3. Pull pinion out and release. If pinion returns quickly to its original position, everything is in order. If it doesn't, replace the magnetic switch.

COMMUTATOR TEST

  1. Place the armature on a pair of V- blocks and check the runout by using a dial gauge. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164136-S31366507522004072200000) .
  2. Check the outer diameter of the commutator. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164136-S31366507522004072200000) .
  3. Check the depth of the undercut between segments. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-164136-S31366507522004072200000) .
  4. Replace commutator if runout, outer diameter or undercut depth is not within specification.

BRUSH HOLDER TEST

Using ohmmeter, check continuity between each insulated brush and plate. (Scheme 3) The normal condition is no continuity.
