TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. To trouble shoot engine mechanical components, see ENGINE MECHANICAL in BASIC TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Inspection

Check tank for defects or cracks. Replace if defective. Check coolant passages for restrictions. Clean as necessary. With straightedge and feeler gauge, check mounting surface for warpage. Standard allowable value is .006" (.15 mm). Service limit is .008" (.20 mm).

Clean cylinder head mating surfaces. Remove carbon deposits. Clean all oil passages. Inspect cylinder head for cracks, damage and coolant leakage. Inspect cylinder head for warpage at deck surface. Resurface cylinder head if warpage exceeds specification. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.

Check belt teeth for cracks, damage and oil contamination. Inspect all sprockets for damage. Check tensioner pulley and idler pulley for grease leakage and roughness in rotation. Check sprockets and pulleys for wear, cracks or damage. Replace components if necessary.

  1. Inspect camshaft journal diameter and lobe height for wear. Replace camshaft if journal diameter and lobe height are not within specification. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-121832-S29852714962001091100000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Check cam surface and bearing surface for abnormal wear. Replace camshaft if necessary. If bearing surface is excessively damaged, replace cylinder head or camshaft bearing cap, as necessary.
  3. Ensure camshaft end play is within specification. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-121832-S29852714962001091100000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  4. Check camshaft oil seal for wear. Replace if necessary.
  5. Hold hydraulic lash adjuster. When lifter is properly full of oil, no compression of adjuster halves should be possible. If adjuster halves compress, replace adjuster.
  1. Check oil holes, and clean if clogged. Check front case for cracks or other damage.
  2. Check crankshaft oil seal. Replace seal if lip is worn or seal is otherwise damaged.
  3. Check oil pressure switch with ohmmeter leads on body and on sender tip. Continuity should exist. Using a thin piece of wire, press wire into oil passage opening in switch. Check continuity again. If continuity exists, switch is faulty and must be replaced. If switch leaks oil at electrical terminal with engine running, diaphragm is ruptured and switch must be replaced.
  4. Assemble oil pump gears to front case. Rotate pump, and check for smooth operation. Ensure there is no ridge wear on contact surfaces.
  5. Check clearance between gear tips and case.
  6. Place straightedge across front cover housing. Measure side clearance between each gear and straightedge.
  7. Replace components if not within specification. See «OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-121832-S16587326742001091100000) table.
