DIAGNOSTIC TEST

  1. CHECK ENGINE COMPRESSION WITH THE SCAN TOOL NOTE: Perform the diagnostics for any Crank or Cam Sensor DTCs before proceeding with this procedure. Refer to «2.2L DIESEL - DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX»(ref-612773) . With the scan tool, perform the Cylinder Compression Test. Does the Cylinder Compression Test indicate low compression in any of the cylinders? Yes Using the service information, repair the engine as necessary to regain proper cylinder compression. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 2
  2. CHECK FOR INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM LEAKS OR RESTRICTIONS Inspect the exhaust system for damaged components that could cause an exhaust leak or exhaust flow restrictions. Inspect all air intake, crankcase vent and Turbocharger related hoses/tubes and connections for damage, air leaks or restrictions. Inspect the air filter for excessive dirt, soiling or other problems that may cause restricted air flow. Were any problems found? Yes Repair or replace as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 3
  3. CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to «CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM»(ref-612749-S00153506822014043000000) . Is there any evidence of problems? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 4
  4. CHECK THE GLOW PLUG SYSTEM Perform the CHECKING THE GLOW PLUG SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to «CHECKING THE GLOW PLUG SYSTEM»(ref-612749-S09245507002014043000000) . Did the Glow Plug system test good? Yes Go To 5 No Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  5. ENGINE DRIVE CHAINS Refer to «2.2L DIESEL - SERVICE INFORMATION»(ref-612696) to make sure the Engine Drive Chains are installed correctly and the camshaft and crankshaft gears are timed correctly. Were any problems found? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Test Complete.
  1. CHECK FOR PCM DTCS Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, read the PCM DTCs. Are there any DTCs present? Yes Refer to «DTC INDEX»(ref-612788) and perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 2
  2. CHECK THE EGR SYSTEM Inspect the EGR System for signs of external soot streaks indicating a leak. With the scan tool, navigate to Miscellaneous Functions, and perform the EGR/ECU Self Test procedure. Were any problems found with the EGR System? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 3
  3. CHECK THE BOOST PRESSURE SYSTEM Perform the CHECKING THE BOOST PRESSURE SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to «CHECKING THE BOOST PRESSURE SYSTEM»(ref-612749-S04299013242014043000000) . Were there any problems found? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 4
  4. CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure. Refer to «CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM»(ref-612749-S00153506822014043000000) . Were there any problems found? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 5
  5. FUEL INJECTOR NOTE: An injector that sticks open can cause this symptom. A sticking injector will cause the engine to misfire and emit excessive black smoke from the exhaust system. Start and idle the engine. With the scan tool, perform the Cylinder Fuel Quantity Correction Test. NOTE: A problem injector will be indicated by a significant change in correction quantity as compared to the rest of the injectors. Are any of the injectors displaying a significant amount of injection quantity correction? Yes Using the service information, remove and inspect the Fuel Injectors for signs of damage or debris that may cause the injector to stick. Sticking injectors may cause the combustion chamber to become black and oil soaked. Replace Injector(s) as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 6
  6. ENGINE COMPRESSION With the scan tool, perform the Cylinder Compression Test. Does the Cylinder Compression Test indicate low compression in any of the cylinders? Yes Using the service information, repair the engine as necessary to regain proper cylinder compression. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 7
  7. ENGINE DRIVE BELT/CHAIN Refer to «2.2L DIESEL - SERVICE INFORMATION»(ref-612696) to make sure the Engine Drive Belt/Chain is installed correctly and the camshaft and crankshaft gears are timed correctly. Were any problems found? Yes Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Test Complete.

BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR CALIBRATION

  1. Turn the ignition on.
  2. With the scan tool, read and compare the Boost Pressure Sensor hpa, Intake Air Pressure Sensor hpa, and Barometric Pressure Sensor hpa. NOTE: The Boost Pressure Sensor hpa, Intake Air Pressure Sensor hpa, and Barometric Pressure Sensor hpa readings should be close at ignition on. The readings will vary depending on altitude. Is the Boost Pressure hpa within 2% of the Intake Air Pressure Sensor hpa, and Barometric Pressure Sensor hpa? Yes Test Complete. No Replace the Turbocharger Boost Pressure Sensor in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  1. CHECK THE BOOST PRESSURE ACTUATOR OPERATION NOTE: If there DTCs present for the Boost Pressure Actuator, perform the diagnostics for that DTC before proceeding with this procedure. Refer to «2.2L DIESEL - DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX»(ref-612773) . Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, actuate the Boost Pressure Actuator to 100%. While standing at the right front of the vehicle (front of engine side), observe the position of the Boost Pressure Actuator armature. Does the Boost Pressure Actuator change from the 10 o'clock to the 9 o'clock position when actuated? Yes Go To 3 No Go To 2
  2. CHECK FOR BOOST PRESSURE ACTUATOR LINKAGE PROBLEM Disconnect the linkage from the Boost Pressure Actuator and inspect the linkage for foreign debris, binding or damage that could cause restricted movement. Were any problems found? Yes Repair or replace as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Replace the Boost Pressure Actuator or Turbocharger Assembly in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  3. CHECKING BOOST PRESSURE NOTE: This test requires two people. One person to test drive the vehicle while a technician observes the scan tool readings. Test drive the vehicle. With the scan tool in Sensors, read and compare the Boost Pressure (PSI) with the Boost Pressure Desired/Setpoint (PSI) while test driving the vehicle under various load conditions such as idle, hard acceleration, and cruise. NOTE: The Boost Pressure reading should directionally follow (trail) the Boost Pressure Desired/Setpoint reading. Does the Boost Pressure reading follow the Boost Pressure Desired/Setpoint reading? Yes Test complete. No Go To 4
  4. CHECK FOR INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM LEAKS OR RESTRICTIONS Inspect the air filter for excessive dirt, soiling or other problems that may cause restricted air flow. Inspect the exhaust system for damaged components that could cause an exhaust leak or exhaust flow restrictions. Inspect all air intake, crankcase ventilation and Turbocharger related hoses/tubes and connections for damage, air leaks or restrictions. View repair? Yes Repair or replace the intake or exhaust system as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  1. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO THE GLOW PLUGS Turn the ignition off. Disconnect all four of the Glow Plug harness connectors. Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool in Actuator Tests, select the Glow Plug Pre-Start mode of actuation. Using a voltmeter, measure the voltage at the Glow Plug harness connectors. Is the voltage reading equal to battery voltage at all four Glow Plug harness connectors? Yes Go To 2 No Go To 3
  2. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE GLOW PLUGS Turn the ignition off. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between ground and the Glow Plug terminals. Is the resistance below 1.0 Ohm at all four Glow Plugs? Yes Test complete. Glow Plug system is operating normal. No Replace the Glow Plug that measured above 1.0 Ohm in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  3. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE GLOW PLUG WIRING NOTE: If there is no battery voltage present to all of the Glow Plugs, check the direct battery supply voltage to the Glow Plug Module. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the Glow Plug Module harness connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance of the Glow Plug wire that did not have battery voltage present. Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms? Yes Replace the Glow Plug Module in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Repair the Glow Plug wire that measured above 5.0 Ohms for an open or high resistance. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .

CHECKING ENGINE MECHANICAL

WARNINGDo not attempt to remove or separate high pressure fuel lines. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

Note. The following items should be checked as a possible cause of a Driveability or No-Start problem

  1. Engine Valve Timing - must be within specification.
  2. Engine Compression - must be within specifications.
  3. Camshaft Lobes - check for abnormal wear.
  4. Camshaft Position Sensor - check the camshaft position sensor tooth for debris and deterioration.
  5. Crankshaft Position Sensor - check the crankshaft tone wheel for debris and deterioration.
  6. Engine Exhaust System - must be free of any restriction.
  7. Engine Drive Chains and Sprockets - must be properly positioned.
  8. Vacuum System - must operate properly and be free of any vacuum leaks.
  9. Fuel - must have adequate supply and must be free of contamination (ie. debris, water and gasoline).
  10. Fuel Injectors - must not be plugged or restricted.
  11. Fuel Lift Pump - must operate properly (where applicable).
  12. Fuel Injection Pump - must be producing the correct output volume and pressure.
  13. Inspect the Fuel Lines, Fuel Filter and Fuel Pressure Relief Valve for signs of restriction and leaks.

Note. Check for any Technical Service Bulletins that may relate to the problem.

Are there any problems evident?

Yes

  1. Repair as necessary.
  2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .

No

  1. Test Complete.
  1. VISUAL INSPECTION NOTE: For best results, perform Fuel Delivery System test with vehicle at room temperature. Extreme cold temperatures can cause inaccurate results. NOTE: Make sure that the vehicle has at least 1/8 of a tank of fuel before proceeding with this test. Perform a visual inspection of the fuel system for any signs of a fuel leak. Were any visual signs of a leak detected? Yes Repair as necessary Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 2
  2. CHECKING SENSOR VALUES WITH THE SCAN TOOL NOTE: If there are any DTCs present for the Fuel Pressure Regulator, Fuel Quantity Solenoid, Fuel Injectors, Crank/Cam Sensors or Fuel Pump Control Circuit or relay, repair those DTCs before continuing with the Fuel Delivery System test. Turn the ignition on, engine not running. With the scan tool, perform the following checks: Check and compare the values of the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor, Coolant Temperature Sensor and Fuel Temperature Sensor with the key on. The values should read approximately the same as each other on a cold engine. Check and compare the values of the Air Inlet Pressure Sensor, Boost Pressure Sensor and Exhaust Differential Pressure Sensor. The sensors should read approximately the same. If possible, start the engine and check the following: Check the cam/crank synchronization during cranking. Check and compare the MAF Sensor actual reading against the MAF Sensor setpoint. Check the plausibility of the temperature and pressure sensors. Are the cam and crank synchronized and the sensors reading normal? Yes Go To 3 No Repair as necessary. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  3. SCAN TOOL TEST Perform the following tests with the scan tool: Compression Test. The RPM drop in each cylinder should be approximately equal. Injector Kill Test. The RPM drop in each cylinder should be approximately equal. Do any of the cylinders indicate a problem as compared to the others during the scan tool tests? Yes Evaluate the results of the scan tool tests. If any of the cylinders are found to be performing poorly as compared to the others, check for engine mechanical issues on the suspect cylinder and repair as necessary. If no mechanical issues are found with the engine, Go To 4 No Go To 5
  4. CHECK THE FUEL INJECTOR SUPPLY Turn the ignition off. Remove and check the High Pressure Supply Line to the Fuel Injector of the cylinder that indicated a problem for a restriction. Is the Fuel Injector supply line restricted? Yes Clean or replace the Fuel Injector supply line and perform the scan tool test again. No Using the wiring diagram as a guide, check the resistance of the Fuel Injector circuits between the injector and the PCM. If the resistance is above 2.0 Ohms, repair the circuit for high resistance and perform the scan tool test again. If the resistance was below 2.0 Ohms for both circuits, replace the Fuel Injector in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  5. COMPARE THE FUEL PRESSURE ACTUAL READING AGAINST FUEL PRESSURE SET POINT NOTE: This test requires two people. One person to test drive the vehicle while a technician observes the scan tool readings. With the scan tool, select add the Fuel Pressure Actual to a graph. With the scan tool, select add the Fuel Pressure Setpoint to a graph. Select merge graphs. With the scan tool, compare the Fuel Pressure Actual reading with the Fuel Pressure Setpoint on the graph, while cranking the engine on a no start, or while test driving the vehicle under various load conditions such as idle, hard acceleration, cruise and deceleration. NOTE: The Fuel Pressure reading should closely follow the Fuel Pressure Setpoint reading. Select the conclusion that best matches the result of the test: The Fuel Pressure reading follows closely to the Fuel Pressure Setpoint reading. Go To 6 The Fuel Pressure reading is too low. If the vehicle is a no start, Go To 10 If the vehicle starts and runs, Go To 11 The Fuel Pressure reading is too high. Go To 7 The Fuel Pressure reading is oscillating excessively above and below the Fuel Pressure Setpoint reading. Using a clear tube connected in-line on the low pressure side of the system, check for signs of air bubbles in the fuel supply system. If air bubbles are present, repair the cause of the air bubbles getting into the supply side system. If no air bubbles are present, replace the High Pressure Delivery Pump in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  6. CHECKING FUEL QUALITY/CONTAMINATION Collect a fuel sample from the vehicle in a clean see through container. Collect a fuel sample of fresh clean fuel in a clean, transparent container for reference. Check the vehicle's fuel sample for the following: Check the color of the fuel. Diesel fuel will generally be a yellow color. Allow the fuel to settle and look for cloudiness indicating contamination. Check the volatility of the fuel. Look for a parting line in the fuel sample indicating another type of liquid mixed with the fuel. Look for any signs of debris in the fuel sample. Were any problems found? Yes Refer to «FUEL DELIVERY, DIESEL»(ref-612715-S07184128652014043000000) to replace the fuel in the entire fuel system. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No The fuel system is operating normally. Check for any Service Bulletins that may apply. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  7. CHECKING FOR A RESTRICTION IN THE FUEL RETURN Disconnect the fuel return hose that connects to Fuel Injector 4 and leads to the High Pressure Delivery Pump assembly (HPDP). Connect a rubber hose to the male fitting at Fuel Injector 4 and put the end of the hose into a container to catch the return fuel from the injectors during testing. Connect a vacuum gauge to the end of the return hose leading back to the HPDP. While observing the vacuum gauge, start the engine and allow it to come to idle. NOTE: There should be at least 10" Hg (33.86 kPa) of vacuum if there are no restrictions. Does the vacuum measure above 10" Hg (33.86 kPa)? Yes Using the wiring diagram as a guide, check the resistance of the Fuel Pressure Regulator circuits. If the resistance is above 2.0 Ohms on any circuit, repair the circuit for high resistance. If the circuits measure below 2.0 Ohms, replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 8
  8. CHECKING FUEL RETURN HOSE FOR A RESTRICTION Replace the fuel return hose that connects to Fuel Injector 4 and leads to the High Pressure Delivery Pump assembly (HPDP). Perform the procedure from Test Step 7 over again. Does the vacuum measure above 10" Hg (33.86 kPa)? Yes Repair is complete. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 9
  9. CHECKING FUEL RETURN LINE FOR A RESTRICTION Reconnect the fuel return hose that connects to Fuel Injector 4 and leads to the High Pressure Delivery Pump assembly (HPDP). Disconnect the fuel return line at the quick connect fitting on the left side of the engine. Disconnect the fuel return line at the Fuel Lift Pump. Blow shop air through the return line and check for a restriction. Was the return line restricted? Yes Repair the restriction in the fuel return line. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Replace the High Pressure Delivery Pump in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  10. CHECK THE FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR Disconnect the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor harness connector. Attempt to start the engine. Does the engine start and run? Yes Using the wiring diagram as a guide, check the resistance of the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor circuits between the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and the PCM. If the resistance is above 2.0 Ohms on any circuit, repair the circuit for high resistance. If the circuits measure below 2.0 Ohms, replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 11
  11. CHECK THE LOW SIDE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the quick connect fitting between the Fuel Filter outlet and the High Pressure Fuel Pump and connect the (special tool #8978A, Decay Tool, Fuel). Crank the engine or start the engine and observe the reading on the fuel pressure gauge. Does the fuel pressure read between 52 psi (3.8 bar) and 58 psi (4.0 bar)? Yes, and vehicle starts and runs: Go To 18 Yes, and vehicle is a no start: Go To 16 No, pressure reading is below specification: Go To 12 No, pressure reading is above specification: If the pressure is reading between 58 psi (3.8 bar) and 116 psi (8 bar), check for a restriction in the line between the quick connect fitting and the HPDP. If no restriction is found, replace the High Pressure Delivery Pump and retest the system. If the pressure is reading above 116 psi (8 bar), replace the Fuel Lift Pump and repair the restriction in the line between the quick connect fitting and the HPDP or replace the High Pressure Delivery Pump if no restriction is found and retest the system. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  12. CHECK THE FUEL SUPPLY PRESSURE AT FUEL FILTER INLET Turn the ignition off. Remove the (special tool #8978A, Decay Tool, Fuel) from between the Fuel Filter outlet and the High Pressure Fuel Pump. Reconnect the fuel line. Disconnect the fuel supply line quick connect at the Fuel Filter inlet. Connect the (special tool #8978A, Decay Tool, Fuel) in-line between the fuel supply line and the Fuel Filter inlet fitting. Crank the engine or start the engine and observe the reading on the fuel pressure gauge. Does the fuel pressure read above 52 psi (3.8 bar)? Yes Replace the Fuel Filter in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL.   13. CHECK THE FUEL LIFT PUMP MAXIMUM OUTPUT While the engine is cranking or running, close the valve after the gauge and observe the pressure gauge reading. NOTE: Do not block the line for more than a few seconds or damage to the Fuel Lift Pump can occur. The pressure should spike up and then stabilize at approximately 116 psi (8 bar) in two or three seconds. Does the fuel pressure rise to approximately 116 psi (8 bar)? Yes Replace the High Pressure Delivery Pump in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 14
  14. CHECK THE VOLTAGE DROP OF THE FUEL PUMP MOTOR CIRCUITS Turn the engine off. Reconnect the fuel lines. NOTE: The Fuel Lift Pump Module harness connector should remain connected to the pump during this test step in order to accurately measure the voltage drop. Using a voltmeter, back probe the (N1) Fuel Pump Motor Feed circuit with the positive lead of the meter at the Fuel Lift Pump Module harness connector. Back probe the (Z201) Fuel Lift Pump Ground circuit with the negative lead of the meter at the Fuel Lift Pump Module harness connector. CAUTION: Use only approved connector back probe tools when back probing a connector so as not to cause damage to the terminals or insulation of the connector. Damage to the terminals can cause poor terminal contact or retention. Damage to the insulation can introduce corrosion due to water infiltration. Turn the ignition on. With a scan tool, actuate the Fuel Lift Pump control to ON (100%). NOTE: The voltage should read the same as battery voltage if there is no resistance in the circuit. Is the voltage reading the same as battery voltage +/- 0.2 Volts? Yes Check the supply line between the Fuel Lift Pump and the Fuel Filter for a restriction. If the line is not restricted, replace the Fuel Lift Pump in accordance with the service information. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Go To 15
  15. CHECK THE VOLTAGE DROP IN THE (N1) FUEL PUMP MOTOR FEED CIRCUIT Turn the engine off. Remove the negative lead of the meter from the Fuel Lift Pump harness connector and connect the lead to a good battery ground. NOTE: The Fuel Lift Pump Module harness connector should remain connected. Turn the ignition on. With a scan tool, actuate the Fuel Lift Pump control to ON (100%). Measure the voltage of the (N1) Fuel Pump Motor Feed circuit at the Fuel Lift Pump harness connector. Is the voltage reading the same as battery voltage +/- 0.2 Volts? Yes Repair the (Z201) Fuel Lift Pump Ground circuit for an open circuit or high resistance. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Repair the (N1) Fuel Pump Motor Feed circuit for an open circuit or high resistance. Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to «STANDARD PROCEDURE»(ref-612758-S33453045902014043000000) .
  16. STATIC FUEL INJECTOR LEAK BACK CHECK Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the fuel return hoses at the Fuel Injectors. Install one end of a 4 mm internal diameter clear tube to each Fuel Injector return fitting. Block off the open end of the rubber return hoses to prevent fuel from escaping. NOTE: Be sure to isolate each Injector so that the volume from each Injector is being measured individually. Disconnect the fuel return line at the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Cap the end of the fuel return line to keep debris from entering the system. Install an 8 mm clear tube on the end of the Fuel Rail. Place the end of the 8 mm clear tube into a measurement bottle. Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests and select the Hydraulic Test Status routine. NOTE: This routine will activate the lift pump, disable injections, open the Fuel Quantity Solenoid, and set the Fuel Pressure Regulator to limit rail pressure to approximately 600 bar (8702 psi). The starter will be activated for five seconds. During this cycle, read and record the maximum fuel rail pressure. Using a metric ruler, measure the quantity of fuel collected in the clear tubes after the five second crank. Is the quantity of fuel collected for each Fuel Injector below 10.0 cm? Yes Go To 17 No Replace the Fuel Injector or Fuel Injectors that were over specification. Re-run the test to confirm the repair. If after replacing the faulty Fuel Injector(s), the maximum fuel rail pressure is below 500 bar (7252 psi), Go To 17 . If the maximum fuel rail pressure is above 500 bar (7252 psi), repair is complete. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL.   17. STATIC PRESSURE REGULATOR LEAK BACK/HIGH PRESSURE DELIVERY PUMP CHECK Turn the ignition off. Measure the quantity of fuel that was collected from the Fuel Pressure Regulator during one test cycle. Is the quantity of fuel collected from the Fuel Pressure Regulator below 5 ml for one test cycle? Yes Replace the High Pressure Delivery Pump in accordance with the service information. Re-run the test to confirm the repair. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) . No Using the wiring diagram as a guide, check the resistance of the Fuel Pressure Regulator circuits between the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the PCM. If the resistance is above 2.0 Ohms, repair the high resistance in the wiring. If the resistance is below 2.0 Ohms, replace the Fuel Rail Assembly in accordance with the service information. Re-run the test to confirm the repair. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .
  18. DYNAMIC FUEL LEAK BACK CHECK Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the fuel return hoses at the Fuel Injectors. Install a piece of 4 mm clear tubing to each Fuel Injector return fitting. Block off the open end of the rubber return hoses to prevent fuel from escaping and debris from entering the system. Place the end of the 4 mm clear tube into a measurement bottle. Disconnect the fuel return line at the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Cap the end of the fuel return line to keep debris from entering the system. Install an 8 mm clear tube on the end of the Fuel Rail. Place the end of the 8 mm clear tube into a measurement bottle. Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests and select the High Pressure Diagnostic routine. Select "IMV Mode" and start the engine. The test will start and run automatically, and then stop automatically. Turn the engine off after the test stops running. Measure the quantity of fuel collected in each measuring bottle. Is the volume of fuel collected for each Fuel Injector below 40 ml and the Fuel Pressure Regulator below 20 ml? Yes Go To 19 No Replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator or the Fuel Injector that was over specification. Re-run the test to confirm the repair. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL.   19. DYNAMIC PRESSURE REGULATOR LEAK BACK/HIGH PRESSURE DELIVERY PUMP CHECK Turn the ignition off. Reconnect the Fuel Injector return hoses. Empty the bottle connected to the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Turn the ignition on. With the scan tool, navigate to Systems Tests and select the High Pressure Diagnostic routine. Select "HPV Mode" and start the engine. The test will start and run automatically, and then stop automatically. Measure the quantity of fuel collected in the bottle after the test stops running. Is the quantity of fuel collected above 40 ml? Yes Using the wiring diagram as a guide, check the resistance of the Fuel Pressure Regulator circuits between the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the PCM. If the resistance is above 2.0 Ohms, repair the high resistance in the wiring. If the resistance is below 2.0 Ohms, replace the Fuel Rail Assembly in accordance with the service information. Re-run the test to confirm the repair. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL. Refer to «PCM VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL»(ref-612777-S29039400032014043000000) .   1. BATTERY CABLES NOTE: Make sure there are no Active DTCs in the PCM or TIPM. If the PCM or TIPM have Active DTCs, repair these DTCs before continuing with No Crank diagnosis.   3. CHECKING STARTER OPERATION NOTE: The Starter Motor Fuse in the TIPM must not be open for this test to be valid. Check the condition of the Starter Motor Fuse in the TIPM. If the fuse is open, replace and attempt to crank the engine. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the (T750) Starter Control Output circuit at the Starter Motor. With a 12-Volt test light connected to ground, probe the (T750) Starter Control Output circuit. Fully depress the clutch pedal. While observing the test light, turn the ignition switch to the Crank/Start position. Is the 12-Volt test light illuminated brightly? Yes Go To 4 No Go To 5
  4. MECHANICAL PROBLEM Turn the ignition off. Attempt to manually rotate the crankshaft 360°. Is the crankshaft able to rotate 360°? Check for poor terminal contact, corrosion, spread terminals, improper connections or other problems that could cause an intermittent condition. Were any problems found? Using a 12-Volt test light connected to ground, check both Fused Main Relay Battery Supply circuits in Main Relay connector. Is the test light on? Did the test light illuminate for each cavity? Yes Go To 4 No Repair the PCM Ground circuit(s) for an open. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL.   6. CHECKING THE MAIN RELAY SYSTEM Turn the ignition off. Connect a jumper wire between ground and the Main Relay Control circuit in PCM C2 harness connector cavity 44. Turn the ignition on. Using a 12-Volt test light connected to ground, check the Fused Main Relay Output circuits at the PCM C2 harness connector, cavities 1, 3, and 5. Does the 12-Volt test light illuminate brightly for each circuit? Yes Test Complete. The PCM power and ground circuits tested good.   1. CHECK THE OIL LEVEL Turn the ignition off. Check the engine oil level and verify that it is correct. Is the oil level within specification?   2. CHECK THE (K111) OIL LEVEL SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the Oil Level Switch harness connector. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K111) Oil Level Switch Signal circuit at the Oil Level Switch harness connector. Is the resistance above 10k Ohms? Yes Go To 3 No Repair the (K111) Oil Level Switch Signal circuit for a short to ground. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 2.2L DIESEL.
