DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The shift interlock system consists of a shift interlock cable/solenoid assembly (connected between ignition switch and floor shifter). (Scheme 8) A brakelight switch and PCM/TCM sense circuits are used to control shift interlock solenoid. With ignition switch in LOCK or ACC position, the gear selector is locked in Park. With ignition switch in RUN position, the gear selector is locked in Park until the brake pedal is depressed. Depressing the brake pedal de-energizes shift interlock solenoid and allows gear selector to move to any position. The shift interlock system also prevents the ignition switch from being turned to LOCK or ACC position unless gear selector is returned to Park.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

1. Ensure ignition key can only be removed from ignition switch with gear selector in Park.
2. Ensure gear selector is in Park with shift handle push button in the released position. Ignition switch should rotate freely from OFF position to LOCK position. Ignition switch should not rotate to LOCK position with gear selector in any other position.
3. Shifting from Park should be possible when ignition switch is in OFF position.
4. Shifting from Park should not be possible while depressing shift handle push button when ignition switch is in RUN or START positions unless brake pedal is depressed.
5. Shifting from Park should not be possible when ignition switch is in ACC or LOCK positions.
6. Shifting between gears or into Park may be done without depressing brake pedal with ignition switch in RUN or START positions.
7. If shift interlock system does not operate as specified, verify proper gear shift cable and shift interlock cable adjustments. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-129562-S27044355692001111500000) .
