Cherokee & Wrangler

1. With transmission in Park and engine off, raise vehicle on hoist. Using screwdriver, unlock gear shift cable by releasing cable adjuster clamp. (Scheme 9) Remove cable from mounting bracket.
2. Move shift lever on transmission rearward until fully seated into Park detent. Verify engagement of park lock by attempting to rotate drive shaft. Park lock is engaged if drive shaft cannot be rotated. Snap gear shift cable into cable mounting bracket. Press down on cable adjuster clamp to lock cable.
3. Lower vehicle and verify engine starting. Engine should start only with gear selector in Park or Neutral.

Scheme 9

Grand Cherokee

1. Shift transmission into Park. Remove gear selector bezel and floor console as necessary for access to gear shift cable adjustment screw. Loosen gear shift cable adjustment screw. Adjustment screw is located in slot at end of gear shift cable. (Scheme 10)
2. Raise vehicle. Unsnap gear shift cable eyelet from transmission shift lever. Move shift lever fully rearward. Ensure transmission is in Park by attempting to rotate driveshaft. Snap cable eyelet onto transmission shift lever. Lower vehicle.
3. Tighten gear shift cable adjustment screw to 65 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Verify adjustment by attempting to start engine in Park and Neutral. Adjustment is okay if engine starts in Park and Neutral and does not start in any other gear position. Install gear selector bezel and floor console.

Scheme 10

SHIFT INTERLOCK CABLE

1. Shift transmission into Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove gear selector bezel to access cable adjustment. Pull cable lock button up to release cable. see scheme 1 Pull cable forward and release.
2. Snap lock button into place. Verify adjustment by attempting to move gear selector. Gear selector should not move. Turn ignition on. Move gear selector to Neutral. If ignition switch cannot be turned to LOCK position, adjustment is okay. Repeat this step with gear selector in Drive.
