Vehicles Without Key Transponder Module (KTM)

Engine cranking is controlled by ignition switch, Engine Control Module (ECM), Body Processor Module (BPM), park/neutral switch, and not-in-park switch at gear selector. (Scheme 14) In ignition ON position (II) and with gear selector in Park, ECM enables fuel and ignition and outputs a security signal to BPM. The BPM receives park signal from not-in-park switch at gear selector and enables cranking if security system has been disarmed. With ignition switch in START position (III), crank signal is received by BPM. The BPM grounds starter relay coil to energize starter. The ECM receives starter relay coil signal and sets engine starting values. The ECM reacts to a signal from the BPM when the starter motor relay is energized. This signal is used to trigger starting, fuel and ignition strategies.

Vehicles With Key Transponder Module (KTM)

Note. Key transponder module is part of engine immobilizer system. An engine immobilizing device is located in the plastic head of the ignition key. Engine immobilization occurs automatically when the ignition key is turned to (0) position.

Engine cranking is controlled by ignition switch, Engine Control Module (ECM), Body Processor Module (BPM), Key Transponder Module (KTM), ignition key transponder exciter, ignition key transponder, park/neutral switch, and not-in-park switch at gear selector. (Scheme 15) The KTM receives signal from ignition switch as key is turned to ON position (II). The KTM energizes reader/exciter and key transponder broadcasts security code.

If code matches the KTM code, the KTM outputs an okay to start signal to ECM. The ECM enables fuel and ignition. The ECM outputs security signal to BCM. The BCM receives park signal from not-in-park switch at gear selector and enables cranking if security system has been disarmed. With ignition switch in START position (III), crank signal is received by BCM. The BCM grounds starter relay coil to energize starter. The ECM receives starter relay coil signal and sets engine starting values.

ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK, CRANKS TOO FAST/SLOW

Note. Do not begin this test without a fully charged and sound battery. During cranking with the engine disabled, observe the engine cranking speed. A cranking speed as low as 90 RPM is acceptable, but will be difficult to measure. A degree of discretion must be used as to when an engine is cranking too slowly.

  1. Check Power Supply, Ground & Trigger To Starter Circuit - Measure voltage drop across the circuit between the battery positive terminal and the starter motor battery cable terminal. Is voltage drop greater than 1 volt? If yes, check battery connection, cable connections at false bulkhead stud connector, and starter motor connection. Make sure all connections are in good condition and secure. If all connections are okay, install a NEW battery cable and retest system for normal operation. If no, go to next step.
  2. Check Volt Drop Across Starter Circuit - Disable the fuel or ignition system to prevent the engine starting. Turn the ignition switch to the CRANK position. Measure voltage drop across the circuit between the battery positive terminal and the starter motor battery cable terminal. Is voltage drop greater than 1 volt? If yes, check battery connection, cable connections at false bulkhead stud connector, and starter motor connection. Make sure all connections are in good condition and secure. If all connections are okay, install a NEW battery cable and retest system for normal operation. If no, go to next step.
  3. Check Ground To Starter Motor - Measure resistance between the engine ground lead and starter motor body. Is the resistance greater than 5 ohms? If yes, clean connection between the starter motor body and the engine block and retest system for normal operation. If no, go to next step.
  4. Check Starter Signal From Starter Relay - Disconnect starter motor harness connector ST03. Turn the ignition switch to the CRANK position. Measure voltage between starter motor harness connector ST03 and GROUND. Is voltage less than 10 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, install a NEW starter motor. See «STARTER»(ref-166974-S05256257362004100400000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Check Starter Signal Circuit For High Resistance - Remove starter relay. Measure resistance between starter relay base terminal No. 5 and starter motor harness connector ST03. Is resistance greater than 5 ohms? If yes, repair high resistance between starter relay base terminal No. 5 and starter motor harness connector ST03 and retest system for normal operation. If no, check if DTC(s) P1245 and/or P1246 are set. See «SELF-DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-11917) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

BATTERY DISCONNECT PROCEDURE

Each door glass automatically drops 12 mm when the door is opened or when the convertible top is raised or lowered. It is important that windows are lowered before battery is disconnected to allow doors to shut properly.

BATTERY RECONNECT PROCEDURE

Note. Whether one or both cables were disconnected, a minimum of 30 seconds MUST elapse between disconnection of the first cable and connection of the last cable. A clean final connection must be made. Do not allow temporary contact.

  1. Connect the battery terminal(s).
  2. Reset the clock.
  3. Enter the radio security code.
  4. Cycle (both) door windows up and down to establish the upper and lower reference points. Turn ignition ON. Lower the glass to the stop and hold the switch in the DOWN position for an additional 5 seconds. Raise the glass fully and hold the switch in the UP position for an additional 5 seconds.
  5. Turn ignition OFF.
