ENGINE MECHANICAL
Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.
S-TYPE 3.0L V6
Note. Manufacturer does not identify if valve adjustment is necessary as routine maintenance or only performed during engine assembly.
Scheme 1
- With engine cold, remove cover over left valve cover. Disconnect engine breather tube. Detach throttle body wiring harness routed next to left valve cover. Detach remaining wiring harnesses from left valve cover. Remove ignition coils from left cylinder head. Remove left cylinder head temperature sensor. Remove left valve cover bolts and remove left valve cover. Discard valve cover gaskets.
- To remove right valve cover requires removal of intake manifold. To remove intake manifold, disconnect negative battery cable. Drain engine cooling system. Remove throttle body. Disconnect EGR vacuum regulator electrical connector. Disconnect electrical connector from intake manifold tuning cover. Remove intake manifold tuning cover.
- Disconnect EGR differential pressure sensor electrical connector. Disconnect EGR differential pressure sensor hoses. Disconnect inlet and outlet intake manifold coolant hoses from rear of intake manifold. Disconnect EVAP purge line tube. Remove 2 EGR mounting bolts. Remove 2 intake manifold bracket bolts (one each side).
- Remove intake manifold bolts. Note intake manifold bolt length during removal as bolt lengths are 2 different sizes. (Scheme 1) Remove fuel pulse damper protective bracket. Disconnect engine breather hose and intake manifold tuning valve electrical connector. Remove intake manifold. Discard intake manifold gaskets.
- To continue removing right valve cover, remove cover over right valve cover. Disconnect EGR valve tube at rear of engine. Detach engine breather tube from right valve cover. Detach wiring harness from right valve cover. Remove ignition coils. Detach wiring harness from right valve cover. Remove right valve cover bolts and remove right valve cover.Discard valve cover gaskets. Perform valve clearance check. See «VALVE CLEARANCE CHECK»(ref-11914-S14055797312001041100000).
- To install either left or right valve cover, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW valve cover gaskets. Apply a 5 mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant to valve cover caps. Apply an 8 mm diameter of silicone gasket sealant on the 2 places where the cylinder head and front cover meet. When installing intake manifold, use NEW intake manifold gaskets. Install a NEW EGR valve gasket.
Valve Clearance Check
| CAUTION | DO NOT rotate engine counterclockwise. Crankshaft journals are directionally machined. Rotating engine counterclockwise may cause burrs on bearing surfaces. |
- Remove left and right valve covers. See «VALVE COVER REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-11914-S34399672262001040300000) . Rotate engine clockwise to position camshaft lobe away from shim surface. Using a feeler gauge, check clearance between camshaft and shim. Rotate engine clockwise as necessary to check all valves.
- Record all clearances. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-11914-S18517353792001040300000) table. If valve adjustment is necessary, see «VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT»(ref-11914-S02742617892001041100000) .
S-TYPE 4.0L V8

IGNITION TIMING
Ignition timing is electronically controlled by Engine Control Module (ECM). No adjustment is necessary.
IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE
Idle speed and mixture are electronically controlled. Adjustment is not necessary.
