REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Scheme 39: Removal & Installation
  1. Place selector lever in Neutral. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove mode switch cover. Disconnect selector lever from mode switch. Remove bracket with cable.
  2. Disconnect transmission harness from mode switch connector. (Scheme 39) Remove bracket with mode switch connector from transmission case. Remove mode switch connector from bracket. Remove 2 bolts and selector lever nut, then remove mode switch.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-152100-S02714398292003011400000). Adjust mode switch as needed. See «MODE SWITCH»(ref-152100-S42210752772003011400000) under ADJUSTMENTS.

  1. Turn ignition key to LOCK position and selector lever to "P" position. On 4WD models, remove transfer control lever knob. On all models, remove lower cluster assembly, rear console, center console, selector lever knob and cover.
  2. Disconnect inner cable from selector lever assembly, then push claw and disconnect cable assembly. Disconnect cable adjustment lock. (Scheme 40) Remove instrument panel lower cover and steering column cover. Remove spring pin and disconnect inner cable. Disconnect outer cable from bracket. (Scheme 41)
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure cable moves smoothly, lightly pulling outer cable rearward. Connect cable adjustment lock, aligning "T" mark in the UP position. (Scheme 40) Ensure cable is adjusted correctly. See «SHIFT CABLE»(ref-152100-S30572995492003011400000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  1. Remove 12 bolts, adapter case oil pan and gasket. Disconnect electrical connectors at components on adapter case valve body. (Scheme 42) Note location of adapter case valve body bolts for reassembly reference.
  2. Remove bolts, adapter case valve body, transfer plate, transfer plate gasket and valve body gasket. Remove check ball from adapter case. (Scheme 43) Remove wiring harness for solenoids on adapter case valve body. Remove 10 bolts, main case oil pan, magnet and gasket. Remove 3 bolts and oil filter.
  3. Remove 4 bolts, servo cover and gasket. Position transmission case with main case valve body facing upward. Note location of main case valve body bolts for reassembly reference. Note position of manual valve link, as long end fits into manual valve and short end fits into range selector.
  4. Remove bolts, main case valve body with manual valve link, transfer plate gasket, main case gasket and transfer plate. Note location of 2 check balls in transmission case. (Scheme 44) Remove check balls from transmission case.
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-152100-S02714398292003011400000).
