Scheme 31
- Perform PCM reset procedure. See «TESTS W/CODES - INTRODUCTION»(ref-16345) article. Start engine. If DTC P1381 and/or DTC P1382 exist, go to next step. If DTC P1381 and/or DTC P1382 do not exist, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. Check for poor connections or loose wires between CYP sensor connector and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Check for poor connections and conditions of spark plug wires. Reconnect or replace spark plug wires as necessary. If spark plug wires are okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect distributor 4-pin sensor connector. Measure resistance between distributor sensor terminals No. 3 (Yellow wire) and No. 4 (Black wire). (Scheme 31) If resistance is 800-1500 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 800-1500 ohms, replace distributor housing.
- Check for continuity between ground and distributor 4-pin connector terminals No. 3 (Yellow wire) and No. 4 (Black wire), individually. (Scheme 31) If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, replace distributor housing.
- Ensure ignition is off. Reconnect distributor 4-pin connector. Disconnect PCM 31-pin connector "C". Using backprobe kit, measure resistance between PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminal C29 (Yellow wire) and terminal C30 (Black wire). see scheme 3 If resistance is 800-1500 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 800-1500 ohms, repair open in Yellow wire and/or Black wire between PCM and distributor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Check for continuity between ground and PCM 31-pin connector "C" terminal C29 (Yellow wire). If continuity exists, repair short in Yellow wire between PCM and distributor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If continuity does not exist, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.

- If either DTC P1456 or DTC P1457 is indicated, check for: A faulty fuel filler cap. Proper vacuum connections. Fuel tank leak. EVAP control canister vent shut valve malfunction. EVAP control canister vent shut valve circuit malfunction. EVAP purge control solenoid valve malfunction. EVAP purge control solenoid valve circuit malfunction. EVAP by-pass solenoid valve malfunction. EVAP by-pass solenoid valve circuit malfunction. Fuel tank pressure sensor malfunction. Fuel tank pressure sensor circuit malfunction. EVAP control canister malfunction. Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
- Disconnect EVAP control canister vent shut valve vacuum hose from EVAP 3-way valve. Connect a vacuum pump/gauge to vacuum hose. (Scheme 32) See «VACUUM DIAGRAMS»(ref-16356) article. Turn ignition on and apply vacuum to hose (5 quick strokes). If vent shut valve does not hold a vacuum, go to step 4). If vent shut valve holds a vacuum, go to next step.
- Disconnect EVAP control canister vent shut valve 2-pin connector. If EVAP control canister vent shut valve holds a vacuum, replace vent shut valve. If EVAP control canister vent shut valve does not hold a vacuum, repair short in Orange/Green wire between vent shut valve 2-pin connector and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal A4. see scheme 1 See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal A4 (Orange/Green wire). see scheme 1 Turn ignition on and apply vacuum to EVAP control canister vent shut valve vacuum hose. If vent shut valve does not hold a vacuum, go to next step. If vent shut valve holds a vacuum, go to step 7).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP control canister vent shut valve 2-pin connector. (Scheme 32) Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and vent shut valve 2-pin connector Black/Yellow wire. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between vent shut valve and No. 4 ECU/CRUISE CONTROL (15-amp) fuse located in underdash fuse/relay box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect EVAP control canister vent shut valve 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Using backprobe kit, measure voltage between PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal A4 (Orange/Green wire) and PCM 25-pin connector "B" terminal B2 (Black wire). see scheme 1and see scheme 2. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Orange/Green wire between vent shut valve and PCM connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If battery voltage exists, replace EVAP control canister vent shut valve.
- Reconnect EVAP control canister vent shut valve vacuum hose to EVAP 3-way valve. Disconnect EVAP purge control solenoid valve vacuum hose from EVAP canister (upper hose). (Scheme 32) See «VACUUM DIAGRAMS»(ref-16356) article. Attach vacuum pump/gauge to disconnected hose. Start engine and allow it to idle. Ensure engine coolant temperature is less than 149°F (65°C). Quickly increase engine speed to 3000 RPM and check for vacuum. If vacuum exists, go to next step. If vacuum does not exist, go to step 10).
- Disconnect EVAP purge control solenoid valve 2-pin connector located next to cruise control actuator. Quickly increase engine speed to 3000 RPM and check for vacuum. If vacuum does not exist, go to next step. If vacuum exists, inspect vacuum hose routing. See «VACUUM DIAGRAMS»(ref-16356) article. If vacuum hose routing is okay, replace EVAP purge control solenoid valve.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 32-pin connector "A". Check for continuity between ground and EVAP purge control solenoid valve 2-pin connector Red/Yellow wire. If continuity exists, repair short in Red/Yellow wire between EVAP purge control solenoid valve connector and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal A6. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If continuity does not exist, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Start engine and ensure vacuum exists at EVAP purge control solenoid valve vacuum hose. Operate engine at 3000 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral until radiator fan comes on. Allow engine to idle. Quickly increase engine speed to 3000 RPM and check for vacuum. If vacuum does not exist, go to next step. If vacuum exists, go to step 14).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP purge control solenoid valve 2-pin connector. Start engine. Measure voltage between EVAP purge control solenoid valve 2-pin harness connector terminals No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire) and No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, check vacuum hose routing. See «VACUUM DIAGRAMS»(ref-16356) article. If vacuum hose routing is okay, replace EVAP purge control solenoid valve.
- Measure voltage between ground and EVAP purge control solenoid valve 2-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between EVAP purge control solenoid valve connector and No. 4 ECU/CRUISE CONTROL (15-amp) fuse located in underdash fuse/relay box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect EVAP purge control solenoid valve 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Using backprobe kit, measure voltage between PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal A6 (Red/Yellow wire) and PCM 25-pin connector "B" terminal B2 (Black wire). see scheme 1and see scheme 2. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Red/Yellow wire between EVAP purge control solenoid valve and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If battery voltage exists, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
- Check EVAP 2-way valve. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB SYSTEMS in «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16351) article. Replace EVAP 2-way valve if faulty. If EVAP 2-way valve is okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect both vacuum hoses from EVAP 2-way valve. Connect vacuum pump/gauge to lower port of EVAP 2-way valve (port to EVAP canister). Turn ignition on and apply vacuum. (Scheme 33) If EVAP 2-way valve holds a vacuum, go to step 17). If 2-way valve does not hold a vacuum, go to next step.
- Disconnect EVAP by-pass solenoid valve 2-pin connector located in middle of rear engine compartment. Apply vacuum to hose. If EVAP 2-way valve holds a vacuum, repair short in Green/Orange wire between EVAP by-pass solenoid valve connector and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal A3. see scheme 1 See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If 2-way valve does not hold a vacuum, replace EVAP by-pass solenoid valve.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal A3 (Green/Orange wire). see scheme 1 Turn ignition on and apply vacuum to EVAP 2-way valve. If EVAP 2-way valve holds a vacuum, go to next step. If EVAP 2-way valve does not hold a vacuum, check following components for leakage to atmosphere, and repair or replace as necessary: fuel filler cap, fuel tank, fuel vapor pipe, EVAP 2-way valve, EVAP by-pass solenoid valve, fuel tank pressure sensor, EVAP control canister, EVAP control canister vent shut valve, EVAP purge control solenoid valve, and vacuum hoses and connections. See «VACUUM DIAGRAMS»(ref-16356) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP by-pass solenoid valve 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EVAP by-pass solenoid valve 2-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between EVAP by-pass solenoid valve connector and No. 4 ECU/CRUISE CONTROL (15-amp) fuse located in underdash fuse/relay box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect EVAP by-pass solenoid valve 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Using backprobe kit, measure voltage between PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal A3 (Green/Orange wire) and PCM 25-pin connector "B" terminal B2 (Black wire). see scheme 1and see scheme 2. If battery voltage exists, replace EVAP by-pass solenoid valve. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Green/Orange wire between EVAP solenoid valve and PCM connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
Scheme 34
- Perform PCM reset procedure. See «TESTS W/CODES - INTRODUCTION»(ref-16345) article. Connect SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100 ). Start engine and run at 3000 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral until radiator fan comes on. Road test vehicle for about 10 minutes. Maintain engine speed at 1700-2500 RPM. If DTC P1491 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC P1491 is not indicated, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. Check for poor connections or loose wires between EGR valve connector and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Start engine and allow it to idle. Measure voltage between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminals No. 4 (Pink wire) and No. 6 (Black wire). (Scheme 34) See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR valve 6-pin connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect battery voltage to EGR valve terminal No. 4 (Pink wire). Start engine and allow it to idle. Using a jumper wire, connect battery ground to EGR valve terminal No. 6 (Black wire). If engine stalls or runs rough, go to next step. If engine does not stall or run rough, replace EGR valve.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 25-pin connector "B". Check for continuity in Pink wire between PCM 25-pin connector "B" terminal B7 and EGR valve 6-pin connector terminal No. 4. see scheme 2and see scheme 11. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Pink wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Check for continuity in Black wire between ground and EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal No. 6. (Scheme 34) If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between EGR valve and ground connection G101 located at end of intake manifold, under Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If continuity exists, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original PCM.
