Starter Does Not Run

1. Check charging failure, then repair charging system.
2. Check battery failure, then replace battery.
3. Check terminal connection failure, then repair or replace terminal connector and/or wiring harness.
4. Check starter switch failure, then repair or replace starter switch.
5. Check starter relay failure, then replace.
6. Check starter failure, then repair or replace starter.

ARMATURE

1. Measure the outer diameter of commutator, and replace with a new one if it is out of limit. (Scheme 16) See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-167897-S28593317972004102500000).
2. Check for continuity between segment and segment on the commutator. Replace commutator if there is no continuity. (Scheme 17)
3. Check for continuity between commutator and shaft. Also, check for continuity between commutator and armature core, armature core and shaft. Replace commutator if there is continuity. (Scheme 18) See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-167897-S28593317972004102500000).
4. Measure runout of the commutator with a dial gauge. (Scheme 19) Repair or replace, if it exceeds the limit. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-167897-S28593317972004102500000).
5. Polish commutator surface with sandpaper #500 to #600 if it is rough. (Scheme 20)
6. Measure the depth of insulator in commutator. Replace, if it is below the limit. (Scheme 21) See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-167897-S28593317972004102500000).

BEARING

Inspect excessive wear or damage. Replace the bearing if an abnormal noise is heard under normal operating condition. (Scheme 22)

1. Measure length of brush.
2. Replace with new one if below limit. (Scheme 23)and see «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-167897-S28593317972004102500000) for measurement.

BRUSH HOLDER

Check for continuity between brush holder (+) (4) and base (-). Replace, if there is continuity. (Scheme 24)

BRUSH SPRING

Use spring balancer to measure the spring setting force when removing the spring from the brush. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS .

1. Check for continuity between the end of the field coil and yoke body. (Scheme 25) Replace the field coil, if there is continuity.
2. Check continuity between the lead wire of terminal "C" and brush. (Scheme 26) Replace yoke assembly if there is no continuity.
