Automatic Transmission: Removal & Installation Infiniti EX35 I

INSTALLATION

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONApply multi-purpose grease on the surface that the shift lock unit plate slides vertically.
  1. When installing control rod to control device assembly, refer to " «ADJUSTMENT»(ref-368808-S18603018742010081300000) ". Refer to " «2WD : INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT»(ref-368808-S02248644452010081300000) ".

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONApply multi-purpose grease on the pin surface (that slides after installing a collar) of pivot pin. Apply multi-purpose grease on the surface that the shift lock unit plate slides vertically.
  1. When installing control rod to control device assembly, refer to " «ADJUSTMENT»(ref-368808-S18603018742010081300000) ". Refer to " «AWD : INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT»(ref-368808-S04404758372010081300000) ".

REMOVAL

  1. Remove control rod from control device assembly. Refer to " «2WD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368808-S25936053522010081300000) " (2WD models), " «AWD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368808-S05523532882010081300000) " (AWD models).
  2. Remove manual lever from A/T assembly.
  3. Remove control rod from manual lever.

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONApply multi-purpose grease on the pin surface (that slides after installing collar) of the tip of the control rod.
  1. When installing control rod to control device assembly, refer to " «ADJUSTMENT»(ref-368808-S18603018742010081300000) ". Refer to " «2WD : INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT»(ref-368808-S02248644452010081300000) " (2WD models), " «AWD : INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT»(ref-368808-S04404758372010081300000) " (AWD models).

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONBe careful not to damage connector when installing any connector. Never reuse drain plug and drain plug gasket. Never reuse O-ring. Apply ATF to O-ring. Adjust bolt hole of bracket to bolt hole of control valve with TCM when installing A/T fluid temperature sensor 2 (with bracket).

  1. Refer to the following when installing control valve with TCM to transmission case. CAUTION: Make sure that turbine revolution sensor securely installs turbine revolution sensor holes (B). A : Brake band Hang down revolution sensor harness toward outside so as not to disturb installation of control valve with TCM. Adjust A/T assembly harness connector of control valve with TCM to terminal hole of transmission case. Assemble it so that manual valve (1) cutout is engaged with manual plate (2) projection. Install bolts (A), (B) and (C) to control valve with TCM. Tighten bolt 1, 2 and 3 temporarily to prevent dislocation. After that tighten them in order (1 --> 2 --> 3), and then tighten other bolts. Tighten control valve with TCM bolts to the specified torque. <=: Vehicle front BOLT SYMBOL SPECIFICATION Bolt symbol A B C Number of bolts 5 6 1 Length mm (in) 42 (1.65) 55 (2.17) 40 (1.57) Tightening torque N.m (kg-m, in-lb) 7.9 (0.81, 70) With ATF applied 7.9 (0.81, 70)
  2. Refer to the following when installing oil pan (2) (with oil pan gasket) and clips (1) to transmission case. CAUTION: Never reuse oil pan gasket and oil pan mounting bolts. Install oil pan gasket in the direction to align hole position. Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown in the figure. Be careful not to pinch harnesses. Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket, etc. from oil pan mounting surface. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to the specified torque in numerical order shown in the figure after temporarily tightening them. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to the specified torque.

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONBe careful not to damage connector. Never reuse drain plug and drain plug gasket. Adjust bolt hole of bracket to bolt hole of control valve with TCM when installing A/T fluid temperature sensor 2 (with bracket).

  1. Refer to the following when installing oil pan (2) (with oil pan gasket) and clips (1) to transmission case. CAUTION: Never reuse oil pan gasket and oil pan mounting bolts. Install oil pan gasket in the direction to align hole position. Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown in the figure. Be careful not to pinch harnesses. Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket, etc. from oil pan mounting surface. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to the specified torque in numerical order shown in the figure after temporarily tightening them. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to the specified torque.

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONNever reuse seal rings and drain plug gasket. Apply petroleum jelly to needle bearing and seal rings. Insert the tip of parking rod between the parking pawl and the parking actuator support when assembling the rear extension assembly.

  1. As shown in the figure, use a drift [SST: ST33400001 (J-26082)] (A) to drive rear oil seal into the rear extension until it is flush. CAUTION: Never reuse rear oil seal. Apply ATF to rear oil seal.
  2. Refer to the following installing rear extension assembly. Apply recommended sealant (Genuine Anaerobic Liquid Gasket or equivalent. Refer to " «RECOMMENDED CHEMICAL PRODUCTS AND SEALANTS»(ref-368779-S01206784092010081300000) ".) to rear extension assembly as shown in the figure. A : Start and finish point shall be in the center of two bolts. B : 3 - 5 mm (0.12 - 0.20 in) Sealant width (C) : 1.0 - 2.0 mm (0.04 - 0.08 in) Sealant height (C) : 0.4 - 1.0 mm (0.016 - 0.04 in) CAUTION: Completely remove all moisture, oil and old sealant, etc. from the transmission case and rear extension assembly mounting surfaces. Tighten rear extension assembly bolts to the specified torque.

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

  1. As shown in the figure, use the drift [SST: ST33400001 (J-26082)] (A) to drive rear oil seal into rear extension assembly until it is flush. CAUTION: Never reuse rear oil seal. Apply ATF to rear oil seal.

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

  1. As shown in the figure, use the drift [64 mm (2.52 in) dia. commercial service tool] (A) to drive rear oil seal into adapter case assembly until it is flush. CAUTION: Never reuse rear oil seal. Apply ATF to rear oil seal.

Note the following, and install in the reverse order removal.

CAUTIONInsert the tip of parking rod between the parking pole and the parking actuator support when assembling the rear extension assembly. Never reuse drain plug gasket.

  1. Refer to the following when installing revolution sensor. CAUTION: Never subject it to impact by dropping or hitting it. Never disassemble. Never allow metal filings, etc. to get on the sensor's front edge magnetic area. Never place in an area affected by magnetism.
  2. Refer to the following when installing rear extension assembly. Apply recommended sealant (Genuine Anaerobic Liquid Gasket or equivalent. Refer to " «RECOMMENDED CHEMICAL PRODUCTS AND SEALANTS»(ref-368779-S01206784092010081300000) ".) to rear extension assembly as shown in the figure. A : Start and finish point shall be in the center of two bolts. B : 3 - 5 mm (0.12 - 0.20 in) Sealant width (C) : 1.0 - 2.0 mm (0.04 - 0.08 in) Sealant height (C) : 0.4 - 1.0 mm (0.016 - 0.04 in) CAUTION: Completely remove all moisture, oil and old sealant, etc. from transmission case and rear extension assembly mounting surfaces. Tighten rear extension assembly bolts to the specified torque.
  3. Refer to the following when installing oil pan (2) (with oil pan gasket) and clips (1) to transmission case. CAUTION: Never reuse oil pan gasket and oil pan mounting gasket. Install oil pan gasket in the direction to align hole position. Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown in the figure. Be careful not to pinch harnesses. Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket, etc. from oil pan mounting surface. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to the specified torque in numerical order shown in the figure after temporarily tightening them. Tighten necessary oil pan mounting bolts with specified torque.
  1. Remove air cleaner case (RH). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S19785767342010081300000) ".
  2. Remove exhaust front tube and center muffler with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  3. Remove exhaust mounting bracket. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  4. Remove three way catalyst (right bank). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  5. Remove air breather hose.

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONWhen installing an air breather hose, be careful not to be crushed or blocked by folding or bending the hose. When inserting an air breather hose to the air breather tube, be sure to insert it fully until its end reaches the radius curve end. Ensure clips are securely installed to brackets when installing air breather hose to brackets. When inserting air breather hose to air breather box, be sure to insert it fully until its end reaches the stop. Install air breather hose to air breather box so that the paint mark is facing backward.

Refer to " COMPONENTS " for symbols in the figure.

  1. Remove air cleaner case (RH). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S19785767342010081300000) ".
  2. Remove exhaust front tube and center muffler with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  3. Remove exhaust mounting bracket. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  4. Remove three way catalyst (right bank). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  5. Remove air breather hose.

Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONWhen installing an air breather hose, be careful not to be crushed or blocked by folding or bending the hose. When inserting an air breather hose to the air breather tube, be sure to insert it fully until its end reaches the radius curve end. Ensure clip is securely installed to bracket when installing air breather hose to bracket. Install air breather hose to air breather vent so that the paint mark is facing upward.

Refer to " COMPONENTS " for symbols in the figure.

  1. Remove the engine lower cover with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368788-S37822333862010081300000) ".
  2. Remove the exhaust mounting bracket. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  3. Remove the suspension member stay. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368817-S33613645732010081300000) ".
  4. Pull out the A/T fluid cooler hose from the A/T fluid cooler tube. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368795-S35101085722010081300000) "
  5. Remove the A/T fluid cooler tube from the A/T assembly and engine assembly.
  6. Remove the stabilizer bar. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368817-S25011449832010081300000) ".
  7. Loosen the lower mounting nuts for the engine mounting insulators (RH and LH). Refer to " «2WD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S25216674212010081300000) ".
  8. Set a jack to the engine assembly and slightly lift the engine assembly. CAUTION: Never pull the harnesses, hoses, etc. excessively.
  9. Remove the A/T fluid cooler tube from the vehicle. CAUTION: Be careful not to bend A/T fluid cooler tube.

Install in the reverse order of removal.

  1. Remove the engine lower cover and front under cover with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368788-S37822333862010081300000) ".
  2. Remove the front suspension member. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368817-S32806668972010081300000) ".
  3. Remove exhaust front tube and center muffler with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  4. Remove exhaust mounting bracket. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  5. Remove the three way catalyst (right bank). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  6. Remove front propeller shaft. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368822-S05935512492010081300000) ".
  7. Pull out the A/T fluid cooler hose from the A/T fluid cooler tube. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368795-S35101085722010081300000) ".
  8. Remove the A/T fluid cooler tube from the A/T assembly and engine assembly. CAUTION: Be careful not to bend A/T fluid cooler tube.

Install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTIONWhen removing the A/T assembly from engine, first remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the A/T assembly. Be careful not to damage sensor edge.

  1. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal.
  2. Remove air cleaner case (RH). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S19785767342010081300000) ".
  3. Remove engine lower cover with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368788-S37822333862010081300000) ".
  4. Remove exhaust front tube and center muffler with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  5. Remove rear propeller shaft. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368829-S28972640322010081300000) ".
  6. Remove suspension member stay. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368817-S33613645732010081300000) ".
  7. Remove exhaust mounting bracket. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  8. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor 2 connectors (A).
  9. Remove heated oxygen sensor 2 harness (B) from clips (1).
  10. Remove bracket (2) from transmission assembly.
  11. Remove control rod. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368808-S41546009032010081300000) ".
  12. Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS) from A/T assembly. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S05257962392010081300000) ". CAUTION: Never subject it to impact by dropping or hitting it. Never disassemble. Never allow metal filings, etc. to get on the sensor's front edge magnetic area. Never place in an area affected by magnetism.
  13. Remove starter motor. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368821-S39473784482010081300000) ".
  14. Remove rear plate cover. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW (2WD)»(ref-368797-S38575075692010081300000) ".
  15. Turn crankshaft, and remove the four tightening bolts for drive plate and torque converter. CAUTION: When turning the crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine.
  16. Support A/T assembly with a transmission jack. CAUTION: When setting the transmission jack, be careful not to allow it to collide against the drain plug.
  17. Remove rear engine mounting member with power tool. Refer to " «2WD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S25216674212010081300000) ".
  18. Remove engine mounting insulator (rear). Refer to " «2WD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S25216674212010081300000) ".
  19. Disconnect A/T assembly connector and harness clips.
  20. Remove air breather hose. Refer to " «2WD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368808-S31979881452010081300000) ".
  21. Disconnect fluid cooler tube from A/T assembly. Refer to " «2WD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368808-S37623907282010081300000) ".
  22. Remove bolts fixing A/T assembly to engine assembly with power tool.
  23. Remove A/T assembly from vehicle. CAUTION: Secure torque converter to prevent it from dropping. Secure A/T assembly to a transmission jack.
  24. Remove dynamic damper. Refer to " «2WD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S25216674212010081300000) ".

Note the following, and Install in the reverse order of removal.

  1. When installing A/T assembly to the engine assembly, be sure to check dimension (A) to ensure it is within the reference value limit. Dimension (A) : Refer to " «TORQUE CONVERTER»(ref-368808-S02787349042010081300000) "
  2. When installing A/T assembly to the engine assembly, attach the fixing bolts in accordance with the following standard. BOLT SYMBOL SPECIFICATION Bolt symbol B C Number of bolts 8 4 Bolt length mm (in) 65 (2.56) 35 (1.38) Tightening torque N.m (kg-m, ft-lb) 75 (7.7, 55) 46.6 (4.8, 34) *: Tightening the bolt with bracket.
  3. Align the positions of tightening bolts for drive plate with those of the torque converter, and temporarily tighten the bolts. Then, tighten the bolts with the specified torque. CAUTION: When turning crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine. When tightening the tightening bolts for the torque converter after fixing the crankshaft pulley bolts, be sure to confirm the tightening torque of the crankshaft pulley mounting bolts. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S18777869772010081300000) ". Rotate crankshaft several turns and check to be sure that A/T rotates freely without binding after converter is installed to drive plate.
  4. Install crankshaft position sensor (POS). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S05257962392010081300000) ".
CAUTIONWhen removing the A/T assembly from engine, first remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the A/T assembly. Be careful not to damage sensor edge.

  1. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal.

  4. Remove exhaust front tube and center muffler and with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  5. Remove rear propeller shaft. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368819-S12032684712010081300000) ".
  6. Remove front cross bar with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368817-S32806668972010081300000) ".
  7. Remove exhaust mounting bracket. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  8. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor 2 connectors (A).
  9. Remove heated oxygen sensor 2 harness (B) from clips (1).
  10. Remove bracket (2) from transmission assembly.
  11. Remove three way catalyst (right bank). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368814-S25132821502010081300000) ".
  12. Remove front propeller shaft. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368822-S05935512492010081300000) ".
  13. Remove control rod. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368808-S41546009032010081300000) ".
  14. Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS) from A/T assembly. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S05257962392010081300000) ". CAUTION: Never subject it to impact by dropping or hitting it. Never disassemble. Never allow metal filings, etc. to get on the sensor's front edge magnetic area. Never place in an area affected by magnetism.
  15. Remove starter motor. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368821-S39473784482010081300000) ".
  16. Remove rear plate cover. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW (AWD)»(ref-368797-S35437469302010081300000) ".
  17. Turn crankshaft, and remove the four tightening bolts for drive plate and torque converter. CAUTION: When turning the crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine.
  18. Support A/T assembly with a transmission jack. CAUTION: When setting the transmission jack, be careful not to allow it to collide against the drain plug.
  19. Remove rear engine mounting member with power tool. Refer to " «AWD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S34161627752010081300000) ".
  20. Remove engine mounting insulator (rear). Refer to " «AWD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S34161627752010081300000) ".
  21. Remove dynamic damper. Refer to " «AWD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S34161627752010081300000) ".
  22. Disconnect A/T assembly connector and harness clips.
  23. Remove air breather hose. Refer to " «AWD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368808-S25328567602010081300000) ".
  24. Disconnect fluid cooler tube from the A/T assembly. Refer to " «AWD : EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368808-S07119569992010081300000) ".
  25. Remove bolts fixing A/T assembly to engine assembly with power tool.
  26. Remove A/T assembly with transfer assembly from vehicle. CAUTION: Secure torque converter to prevent it from dropping. Secure A/T assembly to a transmission jack.
  27. Remove transfer assembly from A/T assembly with power tool. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368804-S28608855732010081300000) ".

Note the following, and Install in the reverse order of removal.

  1. When installing A/T assembly to the engine assembly, be sure to check dimension (A) to ensure it is within the reference value limit. Dimension (A) : Refer to " «TORQUE CONVERTER»(ref-368808-S02787349042010081300000) "

  3. Align the positions of tightening bolts for drive plate with those of the torque converter, and temporarily tighten the bolts. Then, tighten the bolts with the specified torque. CAUTION: When turning crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine. When tightening the tightening bolts for the torque converter after fixing the crankshaft pulley bolts, be sure to confirm the tightening torque of the crankshaft pulley mounting bolts. Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S18777869772010081300000) ". Rotate crankshaft several turns and check to be sure that A/T rotates freely without binding after converter is installed to drive plate.
  4. Install crankshaft position sensor (POS). Refer to " «EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-368797-S05257962392010081300000) ".
