- To check brush holder for a short to ground, check continuity between insulated brush holder and grounded brush holder. (Scheme 9) No continuity should exist. Replace brush holder if continuity exists.

OVERHAUL
| CAUTION | DO NOT immerse starter components in cleaning solvent. Immersing yoke and field coil assembly and/or armature will damage insulation. Wipe these components with a cloth only. DO NOT immerse drive unit in cleaning solvent. Overrunning clutch is factory lubricated and solvent will wash lubrication from clutch. Drive unit may be cleaned with a brush moistened with cleaning solvent and wiped dry using a cloth. |
For disassembly/assembly, use exploded view of starter. (Scheme 11) To remove snap ring and stop ring from overrunning clutch, press the stop ring using a socket. (Scheme 12) After removing the snap ring (using snap-ring pliers), remove the stop ring and the overrunning clutch. To assemble, reverse removal procedure. Using a suitable pulling tool, pull the overrunning clutch stop ring over the snap ring. (Scheme 13)
