On models without air bag, disconnect negative battery cable. Remove horn pad retaining screws on back of steering wheel. Lift out horn pad, and disconnect horn switch wires. Remove steering wheel nut.
- On all models, make alignment marks on steering shaft and steering wheel for installation reference. Install suitable steering wheel puller, and pull steering wheel from shaft.
Installation (All Models)
To install, align reference marks on steering shaft and steering wheel. Install washer and lock nut. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
- On models with air bag, remove air bag module and clockspring assembly. See «AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-3981-S41472691152000060700000) and «CLOCKSPRING»(ref-3981-S05505550432000060700000).
- On all other models, disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. Remove screws retaining lower instrument panel crash pad. On Accent and Elantra, disconnect rheostat connector behind lower instrument panel crash pad.
- On all models, remove 3 screws retaining lower steering column covers and remove both covers. Disconnect multifunction switch connectors on lower steering column and untie welding clips. (Scheme 1)
- Remove 4 multifunction switch retaining screws and pull multifunction switch off steering shaft. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal
- Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-3981-S42710672622000060700000). Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-3981-S06953247102000060700000).
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Air bag module is located on steering wheel. Using a hexagonal wrench, remove side cover of steering wheel and air bag module mounting bolts from back side of steering wheel. Tilt air bag module downward. Using a screwdriver, gently pry clockspring connector lock tabs outward to disconnect clockspring connector. (Scheme 2) Remove air bag module.

Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Reactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Check AIR BAG indicator light to ensure system is functioning properly. See AIR BAG SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-3981-S42710672622000060700000) . Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-3981-S06953247102000060700000) .
- Place front wheels in straight ahead position. Remove air bag module. See «AIR BAG MODULE»(ref-3981-S41472691152000060700000) . Remove upper and lower horn plate. Disconnect horn button connector and multifunction switch connectors. Remove steering wheel lock nut. Make alignment marks on steering wheel and steering wheel shaft. CAUTION: DO NOT hammer on steering wheel shaft during removal. Damage may result to steering column.
- Using a puller, remove steering wheel. Remove upper and lower steering column covers.
- Disconnect clockspring (multifunction switch connector) and horn connector located near bottom of steering column. Remove clockspring mounting screws. Remove clockspring.
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Align mating mark and neutral position indicator of clockspring. Install clockspring onto steering column. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-3981-S18017116442000060700000) .
