SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

These precautions should be observed when working with air bag systems

  1. Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system or steering column component. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-3981-S06953247102000060700000) .
  2. After turning ignition switch to LOCK position and disconnecting negative battery cable, wait at least 30 seconds before working on SRS. SRS is equipped with a back-up power source that may allow air bag to deploy up to 30 seconds after negative battery cable is disconnected.
  3. During servicing of air bag module, store where ambient temperature is less than 200°F (93°C), without high humidity and away from electrical noise.
  4. When placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface, ensure pad top surface is facing up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if it is accidentally deployed.
  5. Because of critical operating requirements of system, DO NOT attempt to service air bag module, clockspring, wiring harness or SRS Control Module (SRSCM). Corrections are made by replacement with NEW parts only. NEVER use parts from another vehicle.
  6. If air bag module or SRSCM have been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects visible, replace with NEW parts.
  7. After work is complete on SRS, ensure system is functioning properly. See «AIR BAG SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-3981-S23178338712000060700000) .

DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM

WARNINGBack-up power supply maintains SRS voltage for about 30 seconds after battery is disconnected. After disabling SRS, wait at least 30 seconds before servicing SRS to prevent accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.

To disable SRS, turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 30 seconds before servicing SRS. To activate SRS, reconnect negative battery cable. Perform AIR BAG SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD

CAUTIONDO NOT hammer on steering wheel shaft during removal. Damage may result to steering column.

MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

Note. Multifunction switch may also be referred to as combination switch.

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow SERVICE PRECAUTIONS before working around steering column.

AIR BAG MODULE

WARNINGFailure to follow air bag service precautions may result in air bag deployment and personal injury. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . After component replacement, perform a system operational check to ensure proper system operation. See AIR BAG SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
