STARTER RELAY TEST

Note. Starter relay test information for Elantra, Sonata, and Tiburon is not available from manufacturer.

CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH TEST (M/T)

Remove clutch pedal switch, located on pedal assembly bracket. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between switch terminals. Continuity should exist with switch depressed. Continuity should not exist with switch released. If continuity is not as specified, replace clutch pedal switch.

PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH TEST (A/T)

Disconnect park/neutral position (transmission range) switch harness connector. Check continuity between specified terminals with transmission in specified position. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CONTINUITY table. (Scheme 7)or (Scheme 8). Continuity should only exist when transmission is in Park or Neutral. If continuity is not as specified, check park/neutral position switch adjustment. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH (A/T) under ADJUSTMENTS. If park/neutral position switch is properly adjusted, replace park/neutral position switch.

NO-LOAD TEST

  1. Place starter in soft-jawed vise. Rotate carbon pile rheostat to off position. Connect fully charged 12-volt battery, switch, voltmeter (15-volt scale), ammeter (100-amp scale), and carbon pile rheostat as shown. (Scheme 9) Adjust carbon pile rheostat until voltmeter indicates 11.0-11.5 volts.
  2. Connect remote starter switch between solenoid terminals "B" and "S". Activate remote switch (maximum 10 seconds), and note reading on ammeter. Ensure starter rotates smoothly and maximum amperage draw is within specification. See «STARTER NO-LOAD SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-4077-S39718168312000061200000) table. If starter does not test as specified, replace starter.

Return Test

Disconnect field coil wire from terminal "M" of solenoid. Apply battery voltage to terminal "M" of solenoid, and ground starter case. Manually pull out pinion drive and then release it. (Scheme 12) Pinion drive should return quickly to original position. If pinion drive does not return to original position, replace solenoid.

ARMATURE TEST

  1. To check armature for a grounded circuit, check continuity between commutator and armature coil core. (Scheme 13) No continuity should exist. Replace armature if continuity exists.
  2. To check for an open circuit, check continuity between individual brush segments at commutator end of armature. (Scheme 13) Continuity should exist between each individual brush segment. Replace armature if no continuity exists on any brush segment.
  3. Support armature in "V" blocks, with "V" block positioned at each bearing end of armature. Using a dial indicator, check armature runout at center of commutator and at end of armature. Replace armature if armature runout exceeds.015" (.40 mm).
  4. Using caliper, measure commutator outside diameter at center of commutator. Replace armature if commutator outside diameter is not within specification. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-4077-S32125658432000061200000).
  5. Measure insulator depth at grooves between commutator segments. (Scheme 14) Replace armature if insulator depth is not within specification.

FIELD COIL TEST

  1. Check field coil continuity by connecting ohmmeter probes to field coil positive terminal and brush holder. Replace field coil if continuity does not exist (open circuit).
  2. Check for grounded field coil by placing one ohmmeter probe on starter housing and other probe on field coil positive terminal. If continuity is present, field coil is grounded and must be replaced.
