Accent & Elantra
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. If charge indicator light illuminates, go to next step. If charge indicator light does not illuminate, repair charge indicator circuit as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-63381-S17235038442001020200000).
- Disconnect pre-excitation resistor 4-pin connector. On Accent, pre-excitation resistor is located in engine compartment fuse/relay box. On Elantra, pre-excitation resistor is located in passenger compartment junction block.
- On Accent, check for continuity between resistor terminals No. 1 and 4. Connect ohmmeter positive lead to terminal No. 4 and negative lead to resistor terminal No. 1. On Elantra, check for continuity between resistor terminals No. 1 and 2. Connect ohmmeter positive lead to terminal No. 2 and negative lead to resistor terminal No. 1. (Scheme 20)
- On all models, continuity should exist. Reverse ohmmeter leads and check continuity. Continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, repair pre-excitation resistor circuits. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-63381-S17235038442001020200000). Replace pre-excitation resistor if continuity is not as specified.

Santa Fe 2.4L, Sonata 2.4L & XG300
- Turn ignition off. Connect an inductive-type ammeter with a 0-100 amp range to generator terminal "B" output wire. Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal "B" at generator and negative lead to positive battery post. Ensure ammeter and voltmeter leads are clear of all moving components. Connect a tachometer or scan tool.
- Leave hood open. Start engine. Increase engine speed to approximately 2500 RPM. Turn blower motor and headlights on and off until generator load indicated on ammeter is slightly more than 30 amps.
- Slowly decrease engine speed until generator load is 30 amps. Measure voltage drop on voltmeter. Voltage drop should be 0.3 volt or less. If generator output is high and ammeter value does not decrease to 30 amps, reset ammeter value to 40 amp. Read voltage drop on voltmeter. Voltage drop should be 0.4 volt or less.
- If voltage drop is as specified, generator output wire is okay at this time. If voltage drop is more than specified, check wiring between generator terminal "B" and positive battery terminal. Check for loose connections and discolored wiring harness. Repair as necessary and retest.
Except Santa Fe 2.4L, Sonata 2.4L & XG300
Note. To identify connection problems, DO NOT disturb generator terminals or connections during this test.
- Turn ignition off. Connect voltmeter positive lead to terminal "B" at generator, and negative lead to positive battery post. Ensure that voltmeter leads are clear of all moving components.
- Start engine and allow to idle. Turn on blower motor and headlights. Measure voltage drop on voltmeter. On Accent, Elantra and Tiburon, voltage drop should be 0.3 volt or less. On Santa Fe and Sonata, voltage drop should be 0.2 volt or less.
- If voltage drop is as specified, output wire is okay at this time. If voltage drop is more than specified, check wiring between generator terminal "B" and positive battery terminal. Check for loose connections and discolored wiring harness. Repair as necessary and retest.
BRUSHES
- On Accent, Elantra, Santa Fe 2.4L and Tiburon, replace brushes if worn to limit line. (Scheme 21) On Santa Fe 2.7L, Sonata and XG300, measure length of brush protrusion out of brush holder. Replace brush if protrusion is 0.8" (2.0 mm) or less. On all models, replace all brush springs if any springs are damaged or corroded.
- To remove brushes from holder, On 2.7L, the lower alternator mounting bolt on some models may have to be removed from the backside of the alternator. To remove the bolt it may be necessary to remove the axle halfshaft. pigtail from terminal. On Accent, Elantra, Santa Fe 2.4L and Tiburon, to replace, install brush and spring so that space between limit line and brush holder end is 0.079-0.118" (2.0-3.0 mm), and solder pigtail to brush holder. On Santa Fe 2.7L, Sonata and XG300, install brush into brush holder and solder pigtail to brush holder.

ROTOR
- Measure resistance between rotor slip rings. Resistance should be 3.1 ohms (2.7 ohms on Tiburon). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is extremely low or high, replace rotor assembly.
- Check continuity between each slip ring and rotor core. There should be no continuity between either slip ring and rotor core. If continuity exists, rotor is shorted internally. Replace rotor assembly.
STATOR
- Check continuity between stator coil leads. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace stator assembly.
- Check continuity between each stator coil lead and stator core. There should be no continuity between any stator coil lead and stator core. If continuity exists, replace stator assembly.
Note. Removal and installation procedures for Sonata 2.5L and XG300 are not available from manufacturer.
