Symptom checks can direct technician to malfunctioning component(s) for further diagnosis. A symptom should lead to a specific component, system test, or adjustment.
Use intermittent test procedures to locate driveability problems that do not occur while vehicle is being tested. These test procedures should also be used if a soft (intermittent) trouble code was present, but no problem was found during self-diagnostic testing.
Spark Available
- Verify ignition fuse is not blown.
- Verify fusible link is not blown.
- Verify air intake system is not restricted.
- Ensure fuel system pressure and volume are correct.
- Check for poor fuel quality or contaminated fuel.
- Check for use of fuel with high alcohol content.
- Ensure spark plugs are not worn out and are gapped properly.
- Check exhaust system for restriction.
No Spark Available
- Ensure secondary ignition system is in good condition.
- Ensure pick-up coil air gap is correct.
- Ensure ignition coil supply voltage is correct.
- Ensure ignition coil primary resistance is correct.
- Ensure ignition coil secondary resistance is correct.
- Ensure ignitor resistance is correct.
- Inspect ignitor primary leads for open or short circuit.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
DIFFICULT TO START (CRANKS SLOWLY)
- Inspect starter.
- Inspect electrical system.
- Ensure A/C clutch is not engaged.
- Ensure no connecting rods are seized.
- Ensure no main bearings are seized.
DIFFICULT TO START (CRANKS OKAY)
- Ensure sufficient secondary spark is available.
- Ensure ignition coil resistance is within specification.
- Ensure ignition and valve timing are correct.
- Ensure spark plugs are not worn out and are gapped properly.
- Inspect ignition circuit.
- Ensure distributor pick-up coil air gap is correct.
- Ensure distributor pick-up coil resistance is within specification.
- Check power transistor operation.
- Ensure fuel is of good quality.
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.
- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Inspect ISC actuator for malfunction.
- Inspect air intake system for restriction.
- Ensure vacuum hoses are not disconnected or damaged.
- Inspect for cracks or poor connections at throttle body.
- Test operation of air induction valve.
- Inspect IAT circuit and output.
- Test coolant temperature sensor operation.
- Test control relay operation.
- Ensure electrical harness and connectors are not broken or loose.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
- Ensure EGR valve and system operation is correct.
- Ensure engine has sufficient compression.
- Check cylinder leak down.
DIFFICULT TO START (WHEN HOT OR COLD)
- Test ECT sensor operation.
- Ensure fuel is of good quality.
- Inspect ISC actuator for malfunction.
- Inspect IAT circuit and output.
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.
- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
- Ensure sufficient secondary spark is available.
- Ensure ignition coil resistance is within specification.
- Ensure ignition and valve timing are correct.
EXCESSIVELY SLOW IDLE
- Test ECT sensor operation.
- Inspect ISC actuator for malfunction.
- Ensure EGR valve and system operation is correct.
- Inspect mass/volume airflow sensor.
- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
EXCESSIVELY HIGH IDLE
- Inspect accelerator pedal and cable for sticking.
- Verify vacuum hose routing is correct.
- Ensure there are no vacuum leaks.
- Test ECT sensor operation.
- Inspect ISC actuator for malfunction.
- Inspect IAT circuit and output.
- Verify correct throttle position sensor adjustment and resistance.
- Inspect A/C circuit.
- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
ROUGH OR UNSTABLE IDLE
- Ensure fuel is of good quality.
- Test coolant temperature sensor operation.
- Ensure EGR valve and system operation is correct.
- Ensure sufficient spark is available at all cylinders.
- Ensure spark plugs are not worn out and are gapped properly.
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.
- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Inspect ISC actuator for malfunction.
- Test for IAC servo drive signal and operation.
- Verify vacuum hose routing is correct.
- Ensure there are no vacuum leaks.
- Ensure engine has sufficient compression.
- Check cylinder leak down.
- Inspect mass/volume airflow sensor.
- Ensure ignition and valve timing are correct.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
ENGINE HESITATES OR ACCELERATES POORLY
- Check clutch operation.
- Ensure emergency brake does not drag when released.
- Inspect crankshaft position sensor circuit.
- Check battery voltage and charging system.
- Verify correct throttle position sensor adjustment and resistance.
- Inspect IAT circuit and output.
- Ensure fuel is of good quality.
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.
- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Ensure EGR valve and system operation is correct.
- Ensure sufficient spark is available at all cylinders.
- Ensure spark plugs are not worn out and are gapped properly.
- Ensure ignition and valve timing are correct.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
- Test coolant temperature sensor operation.
- Inspect mass/volume airflow sensor.
ENGINE SURGES
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.

- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
- Test coolant temperature sensor operation.
ENGINE STALLS (AFTER STARTING)
- Ensure fuel is of good quality.
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.
- Ensure EGR valve and system operation is correct.
- Inspect ISC actuator for malfunction.
- Inspect mass/volume airflow sensor.
- Test coolant temperature sensor operation.
- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
ENGINE STALLS (ON ACCELERATION)
- Inspect mass/volume airflow sensor.
- Ensure EGR valve and system operation is correct.
- Verify correct throttle position sensor adjustment and resistance.
- Ensure spark plugs are not worn out and are gapped properly.
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.
- Ensure fuel injector operation is correct.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
ENGINE STALLS (ON DECELERATION)
- Inspect ISC actuator for malfunction.
- Ensure EGR valve and system operation is correct.
- Inspect mass/volume airflow sensor.
- Ensure ECM has correct voltage supply and is properly grounded.
ENGINE LACKS POWER
- Inspect throttle cable adjustment.
- Ensure air intake system is not restricted.
- Test EGR system for correct operation.
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.
- Ensure ignition and valve timing are correct.
- Test purge control valve operation.
- Test vacuum switching valve operation.
- Test throttle position sensor operation.
- Test coolant temperature sensor operation.
- Verify throttle valve opens completely when accelerator pedal is fully pressed.
- Check transmission for correct downshift (A/T).
- Inspect exhaust system for restriction.
- Ensure engine has sufficient compression.
- Check cylinder leak down.
ENGINE MISFIRES OR HESITATES
- Ensure vacuum hoses are not disconnected or damaged.
- Ensure electrical harness and connectors are not broken or loose.
- Ensure fuel pressure is correct.
- Test air conditioner switch operation.
- Test air conditioner power relay operation.
- Test airflow sensor voltage output.
- Test barometric pressure sensor voltage output.
- Test crankshaft position sensor operation.
- Test coolant temperature sensor operation.
- Test idle position switch operation.
- Test ignition switch operation.
- Test inhibitor switch operation (A/T).
- Test intake air temperature sensor operation.
- Test for ISC actuator operation.
- Test heated oxygen sensor voltage output.
- Test power steering pressure switch operation.
- Test throttle position sensor operation.
- Test camshaft position sensor or cylinder No. 1 sensor operation.
AFTERBURN IN EXHAUST SYSTEM
- Ensure there are no leaks in exhaust system.
- Ensure base timing is correct, and timing advance system is functional.
- Test throttle position sensor operation.
- Test coolant temperature sensor operation.
- Test ISC actuator operation.
- Test A/C vacuum solenoid valve (if equipped).
POOR FUEL MILEAGE
- Inspect for fuel leakage.
- Ensure fuel is of good quality.
- Ensure fuel system pressure is correct.
- Inspect for fuel leakage.
- Inspect accelerator pedal linkage.
- Check clutch for slipping.
- Ensure emergency brake does not drag when released.
- Ensure engine has sufficient compression.
- Check cylinder leak down.
- Ensure ignition and valve timing are correct.
- Check HO2S for proper operation.
- Test intake air temperature sensor operation.
DETONATION OR KNOCKING
- Check engine oil level.
- Check engine for overheating.
- Verify base timing is correct.
- Inspect for vacuum leaks.
- Test EGR system operation.
- Check for contaminated or poor quality fuel.
- Check for carbon build-up in combustion chamber.
- Ensure spark plug application is correct.
- Ensure ECM application is correct.
Intermittent Simulation
To reproduce conditions creating intermittent fault, use the following methods
- Lightly vibrate component.
- Heat component.
- Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
- Spray component with water.
- Remove/apply vacuum source.
Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent. If engine is running, monitor for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit.
