ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM)

Note. See wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

Ground Circuits

  1. Turn ignition off. Check resistance between chassis ground and ECM ground terminals. See ECM GROUND TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. If less than 2 ohms exists, go to next step. If more than 2 ohms exists, repair wire(s) between ECM and ground.
  2. Connect voltmeter negative lead to chassis ground. Connect positive lead to each ECM ground terminal. See ECM GROUND TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. With engine running, voltmeter should indicate less than one volt. If voltmeter reading is greater than one volt, check for open, corrosion or loose connection in ground circuit.

Power Circuits

Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage at ECM power terminals. See ECM POWER TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. If battery voltage is not present, check operation of SFI control relay. See RELAYS.

ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES

Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in TESTS W/CODES INTRODUCTION article. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

A/C SWITCH CIRCUITS

Disconnect ECM harness connector. Turn ignition and A/C switches to ON position. Using a DVOM, check voltage to A/C switch at ECM connector terminals. If battery voltage is present, circuit is okay. If battery voltage is not present, repair affected circuit and retest.

POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH (SONATA 2.0L)

  1. Disconnect power steering pressure switch connector located on power steering pump. Check for continuity between switch and chassis ground. Continuity should not exist with wheels in straight-ahead position and engine idling. Continuity should exist when wheels are turned.
  2. Turn engine off. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between switch connector and ground. If 12 volts exists, circuit is okay. If 12 volts does not exist, repair circuit between switch and ECM.

TRANSAXLE RANGE (TR) SWITCH (A/T MODELS)

  1. TR switch is mounted to transaxle, near shift lever mechanism. Ensure switch is adjusted properly. Switch output can be affected by improper adjustment. Check power supply voltage to switch. Disconnect TR switch harness connector.
  2. Turn ignition switch to START position. Check voltage between ground and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 3 on Accent, terminal No. 2 on Elantra and Tiburon, or terminal No. 11 on Sonata. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16686) article. 12 volts should exist. If 12 volts does not exist, repair power supply.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Turn ignition switch to START position. Check TR switch input voltage. If more than 8 volts exists, check control cable adjustment or for faulty TR switch. Repair or replace as necessary. If less than 8 volts exists, check input supply voltage circuit.

RELAYS

CAUTIONWhen applying direct battery voltage, ensure voltage is applied to correct terminal; otherwise, relay damage could result.

Note. Engine Control Relay may also be referred to as the MFI Main Relay. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in TESTS W/CODES INTRODUCTION article. See wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

ENGINE CONTROL RELAY (ACCENT, ELANTRA & TIBURON)

  1. Relay is located behind left side of dash. Disconnect relay from harness connector and remove relay from holder. Apply battery voltage to relay terminal No. 4 and ground terminal No. 2. (Scheme 4)
  2. Check for continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 5, and No. 3 and 5. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace relay.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and relay harness connector terminals No. 4 and 5. If 12 volts does not exist on both terminals, go to next step. If 12 volts exists, go to step 7).
  4. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between Blue fusible Link "B" and relay harness connector terminals No. 4 and 5. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 2 ohms, repair open in wire between relay and fusible link "B".
  5. Check for continuity between ground and relay harness connector terminals No. 4 and 5. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in wire between relay and fusible link "B".
  6. Remove Blue fusible link "B" from underhood relay/fuse box. Check continuity across fusible link. If continuity exists, reinstall fusible link and go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace fusible link and retest.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Measure resistance between relay harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 27. (Scheme 1) If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 2 ohms, repair open in wire between relay and ECM.
  8. Check for continuity between ground and relay harness connector terminal No. 2. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in wire between relay and ECM.
  9. Reconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity between ground and relay harness connector terminal No. 2 with ignition on and engine off. If continuity does not exist, check transaxle range switch input. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH. If transaxle range switch is okay, replace ECM. If continuity exists, ensure all connectors are secure and retest.

ENGINE CONTROL RELAY (SONATA)

  1. Relay is located behind right kick panel, near ECM. Disconnect relay harness connector and remove relay from holder. Apply battery voltage to relay terminal No. 6 and ground terminal No. 8. Check for continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 6. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace relay.
  2. Apply battery voltage to relay terminal No. 7 and ground terminal No. 10. Check for continuity between relay terminals No. 2 and 6. (Scheme 5) If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace relay.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and relay harness connector terminal No. 6. If 12 volts does not exist, go to next step. If 12 volts exists, go to step 7).
  4. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between Blue fusible link "E" and relay harness connector terminal No. 6. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 2 ohms, repair open in wire between relay and fusible link "E".
  5. Check for continuity between ground and relay harness connector terminals No. 6. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in wire between relay and fusible link "E".
  6. Remove Blue fusible link "E" from underhood Relay and Fuse box. Check continuity across fusible link. If continuity exists, reinstall fusible link and go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace fusible link and retest.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Measure resistance between relay harness connector terminal No. 8 and ECM harness connector C01-6 (2.0L) or C51-6 (3.0L), terminal No. 1. (Scheme 2)or (Scheme 3). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 2 ohms, repair open in wire between relay and ECM.
  8. Check for continuity between ground and relay harness connector terminal No. 8. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in wire between relay and ECM.
  9. Reconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity between ground and relay harness connector terminal No. 8 with ignition on and engine off. If continuity does not exist, check transaxle range switch input. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH. If transaxle range switch is okay, replace ECM. If continuity exists, ensure all connectors are secure and retest.

IGNITION SYSTEM

Note. For basic ignition checks, see BASIC TESTING article.

EGR Valve

Remove valve and inspect for carbon deposits. Ensure valve is not sticking. Apply vacuum to valve and check for leaking diaphragm. Check airflow through valve with vacuum applied.

FUEL EVAPORATION

Purge Control Solenoid Valve

  1. Disconnect vacuum hose and harness connector from purge control solenoid valve. Connect vacuum pump purge control solenoid. Apply vacuum and battery voltage and ground to solenoid. With battery voltage applied, vacuum should release. With battery voltage disconnected, vacuum should hold.
  2. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between solenoid valve terminals. At 68°F (20°C), resistance should be 26 ohms on Accent, Elantra and Tiburon, or 36-44 ohms on Sonata.

PCV Valve

Remove PCV valve. Plunger should rattle freely when valve is shaken. Ensure air flows freely when blown through cylinder head side of PCV valve. Ensure air flows with difficulty when blown through intake manifold side of PCV valve.
