2Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Press and hold the brake pedal. Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position. Does the shift lever move out of the PARK position?Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor ConnectionsGo to Step 3
3Turn OFF the ignition. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Press and release the brake pedal several times while observing the TCC Brake Switch parameter in the powertrain control module (PCM) data list. Does the parameter turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal movement?Go to Step 4Go to Diagnostic Starting Point - Lighting Systems
4Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid at the connect of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Press and hold the brake pedal. Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position. Does the shift lever move out of the PARK position?Go to Step 5Go to Step 6
5Test the control circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid for a short to battery voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs . Did you find and correct the condition?Go to Step 10Go to Step 7
6Inspect for poor connections as the harness connector of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs . Did you find and correct the condition?Go to Step 10Go to Step 8
7Inspect for poor connections as the harness connector of the body control module (BCM). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs . Did you find and correct the condition?Go to Step 10Go to Step 9
8IMPORTANT: Depress the button on the side of the shift lock actuator. With the button is depressed, cycle the plastic straw within the shift lever 3 to 5 times. The straw should move smoothly and freely except near the top of the travel where additional force will be required to mechanically actuate the park lock mechanism inside of the shift lock actuator. If there is stick/slip or abnormal friction while cycling the plastic straw or if the straw is altogether stuck in the lever, the entire control assembly (shifter and shift lock actuator) needs to be replaced. Refer to Automatic Transmission Control Replacement . If there is no abnormal friction, replace the shift lock actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Actuator Replacement . Did you complete the replacement?Go to Step 10
9Replace the BCM. Refer to Control Module References for replacement, setup and programming. Did you complete the replacement?Go to Step 10
10Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you find and correct the condition?System OKGo to Step 3
IMPORTANT

2Apply the parking brake and block the wheels. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position without pressing the brake pedal. 3Turn OFF the ignition. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Ensure the brake pedal is not depressed. With a scan tool observe the Brake to Shift Relay parameter in the body control module (BCM) data list. Does the scan tool display an ON status for the Shift Lock Control parameter?Go to Step 5Go to Step 4
4With a scan, tool observe the TCC Brake Switch parameter in the powertrain control module (PCM) data list. Does the scan tool display an OFF status for the TCC Brake Switch input parameter?Go to Step 9Go to Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle
5Turn OFF the ignition. Connect a test lamp between the controlled voltage circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid at the connector of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid and a good ground. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, command the Brake to Shift Relay output control ON and OFF several times while observing the test lamp. Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command?Go to Step 6Go to Step 7
6Turn OFF the ignition. Connect a test lamp between the ground circuit and the controlled voltage circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid at the connector of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, command the Brake to Shift Relay output control ON and OFF several times while observing the test lamp. Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command?Go to Step 8Go to Step 10
7Test the controlled voltage circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs . Did you find and correct the condition?Go to Step 13Go to Step 9
