Engine Controls - Tests W/o Codes: Other Honda Prelude V

ENGINE WILL NOT START

  1. Check the battery. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16344) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
  2. Check starting system. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16344) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
  3. Check fuel pressure. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16344) article.
  4. Check ignition wires, ignition coil and Ignition Control Module (ICM). See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16344) article.
  5. Check PGM-FI main relay. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16351) article.
  6. Check for low engine compression.
  7. Check for intake system air leaks.
  8. Check for a seized engine.
  9. Check for a slipped/broken timing belt.
  10. Check for contaminated fuel.
  11. Check A/T gear position signal (A/T) or clutch switch signal (M/T). See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16351) article.
  12. Test PCM power and ground circuits. See MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) in «TESTS W/CODES - INTRODUCTION»(ref-16345) article.
  13. Check Crankshaft Position (CKP), Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder Position (CYP) and/or Crankshaft Speed Fluctuation (CKF) sensors. See Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in «TESTS W/CODES - INTRODUCTION»(ref-16345) article.
  14. On Accord & Prelude, engine will not start if Immobilizer has not been deactivated or PCM has been replaced and immobilizer code has not been rewritten to new PCM using a Honda PGM Tester. See ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.

HARD TO START

  2. Check fuel pressure. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16344) article.
  3. Check ignition wires, ignition coil and Ignition Control Module (ICM). See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16344) article.
  4. Check for low engine compression.
  5. Check for intake system air leaks.
  6. Check for contaminated fuel.

COLD FAST IDLE TOO LOW

  1. Check idle speed adjustment. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-16352) article.

  3. Inspect/adjust throttle cable. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-16352) article.
  4. Check air cleaner element.

COLD FAST IDLE TOO HIGH

  3. Inspect throttle body for sticking and binding.
  4. Check for worn throttle body.

IDLE SPEED FLUCTUATES

  6. Check intake air pipe for restrictions.

  9. Check Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) for restrictions.
  10. Check for contaminated fuel.
  11. Check for low engine compression.

ENGINE STALLS

DIFFICULTY REFUELING (ACCORD)

  1. Test ORVR vent shut valve. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16351) article.
  2. Inspect ORVR signal tube between fuel pipe and ORVR vent shut valve. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16351) article.
  3. Inspect ORVR vapor vent tube between EVAP control canister and ORVR vent shut valve. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16351) article.
  4. Check EVAP control canister.

FUEL OVERFLOWS DURING REFUELING (ACCORD)

  1. Replace ORVR vent shut valve. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16351) article.

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce conditions creating an intermittent problem, use the following methods

  1. Lightly vibrate component.
  2. Carefully heat component using a hair dryer.
  3. Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
  4. Spray component with water mist.
  5. Remove/apply vacuum source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent problem. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. Use test results to identify a defective component or circuit.
