Engine Controls - Tests W/o Codes: Diagnosis Honda Prelude V

SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS

Note. Recommended system and component checks may not apply to all vehicles.

Symptom checks cannot be used properly unless problem occurs while vehicle is being tested. To reduce diagnostic time, ensure steps in BASIC TESTING and TESTS W/CODES - INTRODUCTION articles have been performed before diagnosing a symptom. Trouble shoot symptom probable causes listed under symptoms in order listed until symptom is eliminated. Symptoms available for diagnosis include

  1. Engine Will Not Start
  2. Hard To Start
  3. Cold Fast Idle Too Low
  4. Cold Fast Idle Too High
  5. Idle RPM Fluctuates
  6. Lack Of Power
  7. Engine Stalls
  8. Difficult to Refuel (Accord)
  9. Fuel Overflows During Refueling (Accord)

INTERMITTENT PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS

Intermittent fault testing requires duplicating circuit or component failure to identify problem. These procedures may lead to computer setting a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) on some systems, which may help in diagnosis.

If the vehicle problem does not produce DTCs, monitor voltage or resistance with DVOM while attempting to reproduce conditions causing intermittent problem. A status change on DVOM indicates a problem has been located.

Use a DVOM to pinpoint problems. When monitoring voltage, ensure ignition is on or engine is running. When monitoring circuit resistance, ensure ignition is off or negative battery terminal is disconnected. Status changes on DVOM during test procedures indicate area of problem.
