VTM-4 Indicator
The VTM-4 indicator comes on under certain conditions even if the 4WD system is working normally. Here are some examples
- When you use high-powered wireless equipment such as a CB or Ham radio in the vehicle.
- When you keep spinning the rear wheels while the vehicle is stuck in sand, mud, snow, etc.
- When the battery voltage suddenly drops below 10 volt.
When the VTM-4 indicator comes on, it stays on until you turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
How to Clear the VTM-4 Control Unit Memory
There are two methods used to clear DTCs from the VTM-4 control unit memory. The recommended method is to use the HDS with the appropriate software plugged into the data link connector (DLC).
The other method is to connect the service check signal (SCS) connector with the HDS, and manually clear the memory.

- With the ignition switch in LOCK (0), connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) behind the driver's dashboard lower cover.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the VTM-4 control unit. If it doesn't, troubleshoot the DLC circuit (see «DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING»(ref-333558-S02093989162009072100000) ).
- Follow the prompts on the HDS screen to clear the DTC(s). NOTE: See the HDS user's manual for specific instructions.

- Park the vehicle on level ground. Shift to P, then turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Release the parking brake pedal.
- With the ignition switch in LOCK (0), connect the HDS to the DLC (A).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the VTM-4 control unit. If it doesn't, troubleshoot the DLC circuit (see «DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING»(ref-333558-S02093989162009072100000) ).
- Short the SCS circuit to body ground using the HDS.
- The VTM-4 indicator comes on and stays on for 4 seconds. Press and hold the VTM-4 LOCK button while the VTM-4 indicator is on.
- When the VTM-4 indicator goes off, release the VTM-4 LOCK button.
- The VTM-4 indicator comes on and stays on for 4 seconds. Push the VTM-4 LOCK button while the VTM-4 indicator is on.
- When the VTM-4 indicator goes off, release the VTM-4 LOCK button. The VTM-4 indicator will blink twice quickly to confirm that the DTCs have been cleared from the VTM-4 control unit memory. NOTE: If the VTM-4 indicator does not blink twice quickly, the memory has not been cleared. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then repeat steps 6 through 10 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then disconnect the HDS from the DLC.
Initialization Of the VTM-4 Control Unit
Whenever the VTM-4 control unit is replaced, it must be initialized to make the 4WD system function. There are two methods used to initialize the VTM-4 control unit. The recommended method is to use the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) with the appropriate software plugged into the data link connector (DLC). The other method is to initialize the VTM-4 control unit manually.

- With the ignition switch in LOCK (0), connect the HDS to the DLC (A).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the VTM-4 control unit. If it doesn't, troubleshoot the DLC circuit (see «DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING»(ref-333558-S02093989162009072100000) ).
- Follow the prompts on the HDS screen. NOTE: See the HDS user's manual for specific instructions.

- Start the engine (the VTM-4 indicator comes on, and the VTM-4 LOCK switch indicator is off).
- Apply the brakes, and shift to either R, 1, or 2, then push the VTM-4 LOCK button (the VTM-4 indicator stays on, and the VTM-4 LOCK switch indicator is on). The 4WD system is now in lock mode.
- Shift to P and turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) (the VTM-4 indicator and the VTM-4 LOCK indicator both come on for 4 seconds, then go off). The VTM-4 control unit is initialized.

This vehicle is equipped with a rear differential system called the variable torque management® 4WD (VTM-4®) system. The VTM-4 control unit controls the currents flowing through electromagnetic coils to engage and disengage the right and left clutches in the rear differential assembly.
VTM-4 features include

LSD (Limited Slip Differential) Control
The torque to be delivered to the rear wheels is calculated based on the differences in speed and acceleration between the front and rear wheels.

- Start the engine.
- Check for DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC 21-2, 22-2, 23-2, and/or 24-2 indicated? YES - Go to step 6 . NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
- Check for DTCs in the VSA system with the HDS. Are any wheel speed sensor DTCs indicated? YES - Go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. • NO - Go to step 7 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 36P connector.
- Disconnect VTM-4 control unit connector A (22P).Connect the VSA modulator-control unit 36P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 14 to body ground with jumper wires.
- Check for continuity between VSA modulator-control unit 36P connector terminal No. 1, No 14. and VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A11 and A22 respectively. Is there continuity YES - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the VTM-4 control unit connectors. If the connections are OK, substitute a known-good VTM-4 control unit (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ) and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with the known-good VTM-4 control unit, replace the original VTM-4 control unit (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ). • NO - Repair open in the wires between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A11 and A22 and the VSA modulator-control unit 36P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 14.
The VTM-4 Indicator Does Not Go Off, But No DTCs Are Stored In Any System: VTM-4, VSA or PGM-FI

- Check the No. 1 (7.5 A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box. Is the fuse OK? YES - Go to step 2 . NO - Replace the fuse, and recheck.
- Do the VTM-4 control unit Initialization (see «INITIALIZATION OF THE VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT»(ref-333569-S08756474922009072100000) ).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the VTM-4 indicator. Does the VTM-4 indicator come on and stay on? YES - Go to step 5 . NO - The system is OK at this time.
- Measure the voltage between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A1 and A10, and between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A1 and B12. Is there battery voltage? YES - Go to step 6 . NO - Repair open in the wire between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A1 and driver's under-dash fuse/relay box, or VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A10 or B12 and body ground.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect VTM-4 control unit connector A (22P) and the gauge control module 32P connector.
- Check for continuity between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A14 and B11 to body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short to ground in the wire between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A14 or B11 and gauge control module. • NO - Go to step 9 .
- Reconnect the gauge control module 32P connector.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the VTM-4 indicator. Does the VTM-4 indicator come on? YES - Go to the gauge control module self-diagnostic function (see «SELF-DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION»(ref-333620-S02042375952009072100000) ). • NO - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the VTM-4 control unit connectors. If the connections are OK, substitute a known-good VTM-4 control unit (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ) and recheck. - Check the VTM-4 indicator. Does the VTM-4 indicator come on? YES - Repair open in the wire between the gauge control module and the VTM-4 control unit. • NO - Go to the gauge control module self-diagnostic function (see «SELF-DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION»(ref-333620-S02042375952009072100000) ).
Note. Before you troubleshoot, review GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION . The VTM-4 LOCK indicator will only come on when the engine is running and the shift lever is in R, 1 or 2 before the button is pressed.

- Check the No. 1 (7.5 A) and No. 10 (7.5 A) fuses in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box. Are the fuses OK? YES - Go to step 2 . NO - Replace the fuses, and recheck.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the VTM-4 LOCK indicator. Does the VTM-4 LOCK indicator come on, and does it go off 4 seconds later? YES - Go to step 4 . NO - Go to step 14 .
- Start the engine, and move the shift lever to R, 1 and 2.

- Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the VTM-4 control unit. If it doesn't, troubleshoot the DLC circuit (see «DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING»(ref-333558-S02093989162009072100000) ).
- Check for DTCs in the A/T system with the HDS. Are there any A/T DTCs indicated? YES - Go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. • NO - Go to step 8 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect VTM-4 control unit connector A (22P).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Measure the voltage between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A8 and body ground. Is there battery voltage when the VTM-4 LOCK switch Is pressed? YES - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the VTM-4 control unit connectors. If the connections are OK, substitute a known-good VTM-4 control unit (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ) and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with the known-good VTM-4 control unit, replace the original VTM-4 control unit (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ). • NO - Go to step 12 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Test the VTM-4 LOCK switch (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ). Is the VTM-4 LOCK switch OK? YES - Repair open in the wire between the VTM-4 LOCK switch and the VTM-4 control unit • NO - Replace the VTM-4 LOCK switch (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ).
- Disconnect VTM-4 control unit connector A (22P).
- Connect VTM-4 connector terminal A16 to body ground with a jumper wire.
- Check the VTM-4 LOCK indicator. Does the VTM-4 LOCK indicator come on? YES - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the VTM-4 control unit connectors. If the connections are OK, substitute a known-good VTM-4 control unit (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ) and recheck. - Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the jumper wire.
- Disconnect the VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector.
- Connect the VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector terminal No. 4 to body ground with a jumper wire.
- Check for continuity between VTM-4 control unit connector terminal A16 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 22 . NO - Repair open in the wire between VTM-4 control unit connector terminal A16 and VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector.
- Remove the jumper wire.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Measure the voltage between VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there battery voltage? YES - Replace the VTM-4 LOCK indicator bulb. • NO - Repair open in the wire between the VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector terminal No. 2 and the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box.
The VTM-4 LOCK Indicator Comes On When The Ignition Switch Is Turned ON (II) and Does Not Go Off

YES - Repair short to ground in the wire between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A16 and the VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector. • NO - Replace the VTM-4 LOCK switch (see «VTM-4 CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S19952800512009072100000) ).
The VTM-4 LOCK Indicator Does Not Come On For About 4 Seconds When the Ignition Switch Is Turned ON (II)

- Check for continuity between VTM-4 control unit connector terminal A16 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 10. NO - Repair open in the wire between VTM-4 control unit connector terminals A16 and VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector.
- Remove the jumper wire.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Measure the voltage between the VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there battery voltage? YES - Replace the VTM-4 LOCK indicator bulb. • NO - Repair open in the wire between the VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector terminal No. 2 and the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box.

- Park the vehicle on level ground, and turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Use solvent and a brush to wash any oil and dirt off the differential fluid inspection oil filler plugs.
- Remove the filler plug (A) and the sealing washer (B), then check the condition of the fluid, and make sure the fluid is at the proper level (C).
- Make sure the fluid is at the proper level (C). If the level is below the proper level, check for fluid leaks at the differential. If a problem is found, fix it before filling the differential with fluid.
- The fluid level must reach up to the bottom of the filler plug hole. If necessary, add the recommended fluid until it runs out of the filler hole, then reinstall the filler plug with a new sealing washer.

- Park the vehicle on level ground, and turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the filler plug (A) and the sealing washer (B). Fluid Capacity 2.64 L (2.79 US qt) at fluid change 2.85 L (3.01 US qt) at overhaul Recommended fluid: Honda VTM-4 Differential Fluid
- Remove the drain plug (C) and the sealing washer (D), and drain the fluid.
- Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.
- Refill the recommended fluid until it reaches the bottom of the filler plug hole.
- Reinstall the filler plug with a new sealing washer.
Note. Before doing the Differential Function Test, the following conditions must be present.
- No DTCs detected.
- Engine is not running.
- The VTM-4 control unit must be initialized.
- With the ignition switch in LOCK (0), connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) behind the driver's dashboard lower cover.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Make sure the HDS communicates with the VTM-4 control unit. If it doesn't, go to «DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING»(ref-333558-S02093989162009072100000) ).
- Confirm that the temperature of the differential fluid is between 68°F (20°C) and 140°F (60°C) with the HDS.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) with the shift lever in P.
- Release the parking brake pedal.
- Raise the vehicle on the lift so all four wheels are off the ground.
- Remove the rear wheels.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Select MISCELLANEOUS TEST, then select the LEFT CLUTCH ELECTROMAGNETIC COIL TEST with the HDS, and follow the screen prompts. If the results are NORMAL, the left clutch is OK, Go to step 9 . If the results are ABNORMAL, replace the rear differential.
- Select MISCELLANEOUS TEST, then select the RIGHT CLUTCH ELECTROMAGNETIC COIL TEST with the HDS, and follow the screen prompts. If the results are NORMAL, the right clutch is OK. If the results are ABNORMAL, replace the rear differential.

- Drain the differential fluid. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (see «DIFFERENTIAL FLUID INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S01826009402009072100000) ).
- Remove the wire harness cover (A), then disconnect the differential fluid temperature sensor 2P connector (B).
- Remove the rear differential fluid temperature sensor (C).
- Install the rear differential fluid temperature sensor with a new O-ring (D) in the reverse order of removal
- Refill the differential with the recommended differential fluid (see «DIFFERENTIAL FLUID INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT»(ref-333569-S01826009402009072100000) ).

- Remove the Driver's center panel (see «DASHBOARD CENTER PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-333587-S16005184032009072100000) ).
- Disconnect the VTM-4 LOCK switch 5P connector from the VTM-4 LOCK switch (A), then remove the VTM-4 LOCK switch from the driver's center panel (B).
- Check for continuity between the terminals in each button position according to the table below.
- If the continuity check is not as specified, replace the VTM-4 LOCK switch bulb or the VTM-4 LOCK switch.
