Thermostat Test
Replace the thermostat if it is open at room temperature.
To test a closed thermostat

- Suspend the thermostat (A) in a container of water. Do not let the thermometer (B) touch the bottom of the hot container.
- Heat the water and check the temperature with a thermometer. Check the temperature at which the thermostat first opens, and at which it is fully open.
- Measure the lift height of the thermostat when it is fully open. Standard Thermostat Lift Height: Above 10.0 mm (0.39 in.) Starts Opening: 169-176°F (76-80°C) Fully Open: 194°F (90°C)

- Turn the water pump pulley counterclockwise. Check that it turns freely. If it doesn't turn smoothly, replace the water pump. NOTE: When you check the water pump pulley, you may see a small amount of "weeping" from the bleed holes (A). This is normal.

- Drain the engine coolant (see «COOLANT REPLACEMENT»(ref-243298-S30488355092006082300000) ).
- Remove the timing belt: J35A9 engine (see «TIMING BELT REMOVAL»(ref-243305-S10145696622006082300000) ) J35Z1 engine (see «TIMING BELT REMOVAL»(ref-243305-S28494970052006082300000) )
- Remove the timing belt adjuster: J35A9 engine (see «TIMING BELT ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT»(ref-243305-S35633412562006082300000) ) J35Z1 engine (see «TIMING BELT ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT»(ref-243305-S07170512662006082300000) )
- Remove the water pump (A) by removing the five bolts.
- Inspect and clean the O-ring groove and the mating surface with the engine block.
- Install the water pump with a new O-ring (B) in the reverse order of removal.
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
- Install the timing belt adjuster: J35A9 engine (see «TIMING BELT ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT»(ref-243305-S35633412562006082300000) ) J35Z1 engine (see «TIMING BELT ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT»(ref-243305-S07170512662006082300000) )
- Install the timing belt: J35A9 engine (see «TIMING BELT INSTALLATION»(ref-243305-S41714125912006082300000) ) J35Z1 engine (see «TIMING BELT INSTALLATION»(ref-243305-S17207205922006082300000) )
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant, then bleed the air from the cooling system (see step 8 in COOLANT REPLACEMENT ).

- Look at the coolant level in the coolant reservoir. Make sure it is between the MAX mark (A) and MIN mark (B).
- If the coolant level in the coolant reservoir is at or below the MIN mark, add coolant to bring it up to the MAX mark, and inspect the cooling system for leaks.

- Start the engine. Set the heater temprerature control dial to maximum heat, then turn off the ignition switch. Make sure the engine and radiator are cool to the touch.
- Remove the radiator cap.
- Loosen the drain plug (A), and drain the coolant.
- Install a rubber hose (A) on the drain bolt (B) located at the rear of the engine block, then loosen the drain bolt.
- When the coolant stops draining, tighten the drain bolt.
- Tighten the radiator drain plug securely.
- Remove, drain, and reinstall the coolant reservoir.
- Pour Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (P/N OL999-9001) into the radiator up to the base of the filler neck. NOTE: Always use Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 (P/N OL999-9001). Using a non-Honda coolant can result in corrosion, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail. Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 is a mixture of 50% antifreeze and 50% water. Do not add water. Engine Coolant Refill Capacity (Including the reservoir capacity of 0.73 L (0.19 US gal)): After Coolant Change: 7.3 L (1.93 US gal) After Engine Overhaul: 9.2 L (2.43 US gal)
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm until it warms up (the radiator fan comes on at least twice). Make sure the thermostat is open.
- Turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator, and add Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed.
- Set the climate control or heater control panel to maximum cool. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm for 5 minutes, then turn off the engine.
- Check the level in the radiator, and add Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed.
- Set the climate control or heater control panel to maximum heat. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm for 5 minutes, then turn off the engine.
- Check the level in the radiator, and add Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed.
- Set the climate control or heater control panel to maximum cool. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm for 3 minutes, then turn off the engine.
- Check the level in the radiator, and add Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed.
- Set the climate control or heater control panel to maximum heat. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 1,500 rpm for 3 minutes, then turn off the engine.
- Check the level in the radiator, and add Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, if needed.
- Repeat steps 15 through 18 until the coolant level does not change in the radiator, then install the radiator cap loosely.
- Set the climate control or heater control panel to maximum cool. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for 1 minute.
- Set the climate control or heater control panel to maximum heat, and select high speed heat mode on the rear control panel. Measure the temperature of the air from the rear floor vent for 2 or 3 minutes. Make sure the temperature is above the standard line of the graph (Scheme 9) If the temperature is below the standard line, repeat steps 15 through 18 several more times. Then loosely install the radiator cap and recheck.
- With the engine idling, make sure you do not hear the sound of water flowing near the rear heater unit. If you hear water flowing, repeat steps 15 through 18 several more items.
- Install the radiator cap fully.
- Fill the reserve tank with Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 up to the MAX mark on the tank, then add an extra 0.4 L (0.11 US gal) coolant.
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
- If the maintenance minder required engine coolant replacement, reset the maintain minder (see «GENERAL INFORMATION»(/honda/pilot/i-2005-2008/remont/reset-procedures/#maintenance) ) and this procedure is complete. If the maintenance minder did not require engine coolant replacement, go to step 27.
- Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) to the data link connector (DLC) (see step 2 under «GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION»(ref-243311-S34757370972006082300000) ).
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II)
- Select BODY ELECTRICAL with the HDS.
- Select ADJUSTMENT in the GAUGE MENU with the HDS.
- Select RESET in the MAINTENANCE MINDER with the HDS.
- Select MAINTENANCE SUB ITEM 5 RESET with the HDS.
- Reset the maintenance information display (see «RESETTING THE MAINTENANCE INFORMATION DISPLAY»(/honda/pilot/i-2005-2008/remont/reset-procedures/#maintenance) )

- Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio and navigation system, then write down the customer's audio presets.
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
- Drain the engine coolant (see «COOLANT REPLACEMENT»(ref-243298-S30488355092006082300000) ).
- Disconnect the breather pipe (A), then remove the intake air duct (B).
- Remove the thermostat cover (A), then remove the thermostat (B).
- Install the new rubber seal (C) onto the thermostat, then install the thermostat with pin (D) up, and install the thermostat cover.
- Install the intake air duct, then connect the breather pipe.
- Connect the negative cable to the battery.
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant, then bleed air from the cooling system (see step 8 ).
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
- Do the power window reset procedure (see «RESETTING THE POWER WINDOW CONTROL UNIT»(ref-243312-S03263640362006082300000) ).
- Enter the anti-theft codes for the radio and the navigation system, then enter the customer's audio presets.
- Set the clock. (on vehicles without navigation).

- Drain the engine coolant (see «COOLANT REPLACEMENT»(ref-243298-S30488355092006082300000) ).
- Remove the intake manifold (see «REMOVAL»(ref-243299-S01672347802006082300000) ).
- Remove the upper radiator hose (A) and lower radiator hose (B).
- Remove the water bypass hose (A) and ground cable (B).
- Remove the harness holder mounting bolt (C), then remove the harness holder (D) from the bracket.
- Remove the heater hoses.
- Remove the engine wire harness connectors from the water passage. Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 1 connector Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 2 connector Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve connector
- Remove the water passage (A) and connecting pipe (B).
- Remove the EGR valve (A), ECT sensor 1 (B), ECT sensor 2 (C), thermostat cover (D), and thermostat (E).
- Install the new rubber seal (F) onto the thermostat, then install the thermostat with pin (G) up, and install the thermostat cover.
- Install the ECT sensor 1 and ECT sensor 2, using the new O-rings (H).
- Install the EGR valve, using a new gasket (I).
- Install the connecting pipe (A) and water passage (B), using the new O-rings (C) and new gaskets (D).
- Install the heater hoses.
- Install harness holder (A) to the bracket, then tighten the mounting bolt (B).
- Install the water bypass hose (C) and ground cable (D).
- Install the upper radiator hose (A) and lower radiator hose (B).
- Install the intake manifold (see «INSTALLATION»(ref-243299-S31351122112006082300000) ).
- After installation, check that all tubes, hoses and connectors are installed correctly.
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant, then bleed air from the cooling system (see step 8 in COOLANT REPLACEMENT ).
- Clean up any spilled engine coolant.
