Inspection

  1. Inspect the belt for cracks and damaged. If the belt is cracks or damaged, replace it.
  2. Check that the pointer "A" on the auto-tensioner housing is not beyond the edge of the indicator rib "B" on the tensioner base. (Scheme 4) If pointer is beyond the indicator rib, replace the alternator compressor belt. See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-162803-S18828156052004061000000).

Scheme 4

Scheme 4
  1. Check the position of the auto-tensioner indicator's pointer "A", start the engine and check the position of the pointer again. If the position changes, go to step 5. (Scheme 4)
  2. Check for abnormal noise from the tensioner pulley. If you hear abnormal noise, replace the auto-tensioner.
  3. Remove the alternator compressor belt. See «ALTERNATOR BELT»(ref-162803-S39684717322004061000000).
  4. Move the auto-tensioner "A" within its limit with the wrench in the direction shown. Check that the tensioner moves smoothly and without any abnormal noise. If the tensioner does not move smoothly or there is abnormal noise, replace the auto-tensioner. See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-162803-S37452646722004061000000). see scheme 10
  5. Stop the engine, remove the auto-tensioner.
  6. Clamp the auto-tensioner "A" by using two 6-mm bolts "B" and a vise "C". Do not clamp the auto-tensioner itself. (Scheme 5)
  7. Attach a torque wrench to the pulley bolt. Measure the torque when the tensioner is turned counterclockwise. If the torque is less than the 17 ft.lbs (23 N.m), replace the auto-tensioner. (Scheme 6)
