Removal

  1. Remove hood. Record radio anti-theft code. Disconnect negative battery cable and then positive battery cable. Remove battery, battery base, bracket and engine ground cable. Remove throttle cable and cruise control cable by loosening lock nut, and slipping cable ends out of throttle linkage. It is not necessary to loosen adjusting nut. NOTE: DO NOT bend throttle cable or cruise control cable when removing. DO NOT use pliers to remove cable from linkage. Replace cable if kinked or damaged. Adjust cables when reinstalling.
  2. Remove side branch clamp from lower radiator hose, then remove intake air duct.
  3. Disconnect battery cable from underhood ABS fuse/relay box and underhood fuse/relay box. Disconnect engine wiring harness connectors on right side of engine compartment. Remove brake booster and EVAP control canister vacuum hoses and other vacuum hoses from throttle body.
  4. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-49294-S30312304912001011500000). Disconnect fuel feed hose and fuel return hose. Disconnect vacuum hoses and power steering hose clamp. Disconnect engine wire harness connectors, terminal, clamps and injector resistor connector on left side of engine compartment.
  5. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove power steering hose clamp. Without disconnecting hoses, remove power steering pump and position aside. Disconnect generator connector and terminal, and remove generator and bracket.
  6. Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector. Remove radiator cap. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels and engine splash shield. Loosen radiator drain plug, drain coolant and tighten drain plug. Remove engine block coolant drain plug, located on side of block near oil filter, and drain engine block. Drain engine oil and transmission fluid. After draining fluids, reinstall all drain plugs with NEW washers and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49294-S25340527252001011500000). Lower vehicle.
  7. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses and heater hoses. Remove A/T cooler hoses (if equipped). Disconnect fan motor connectors. Remove radiator upper brackets and remove radiator assembly. Remove mounting bolts from A/C compressor. Without disconnecting hoses, remove A/C compressor and position aside.
  8. Raise vehicle. Disconnect Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) connector. Remove front exhaust pipe "A" and bracket. Replace exhaust pipe nuts and gaskets. Make match marks between end of center support beam and rear support beam, and remove 2 rear beam mounting bolts. (Scheme 5)
  9. Remove A/T shift control cable and cover. DO NOT bend shift control cable when removing. Always replace kinked or damaged cables. Remove axle shafts. See AXLE SHAFT article in DRIVE AXLES.
  10. Remove front engine mount bracket (replace bracket-to-mount 12-mm through-bolt). Separate stabilizer from lower arms (replace stabilizer lock nuts). Remove lower arms from rear beam. Remove front beam with center beam attached (replace front beam-to-frame 12-mm bolts).
  11. Attach engine hoist to engine and remove slack from chain. Remove rear mount through-bolt and separate rear mount and rear mount bracket (replace 12-mm through-bolt). Remove side engine mount. Remove transmission mount and bracket. Ensure engine/transmission assembly is free of all attachments. Slowly lower engine about 6" and again ensure engine/transmission assembly is free of all attachments. Lower engine/transmission assembly from vehicle.

Note. Tighten engine/transmission mounts to specification in proper sequence. Improper tightening of engine mounts will result in excessive engine noise and vibration, and premature mount wear.

Installation

  1. Install side engine mount. Install a 6 x 100-mm bolt through mount and bracket to align it properly. Install 12-mm through-bolt. Loosely install, but DO NOT tighten, engine side 12-mm nut and bolt. Tighten mount 12-mm through-bolt to specification and remove 6 x 100-mm bolt. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49294-S25340527252001011500000).
  2. Install transmission mount. Install a 6 x 100-mm bolt through mount and bracket to align it properly. Loosely install, but DO NOT tighten, transmission side 10-mm nuts. Tighten mount 12-mm through-bolt to specification and remove 6 x 100-mm bolt. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49294-S25340527252001011500000).
  3. Install rear mount bracket. Install NEW mount through-bolt and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49294-S25340527252001011500000). Install front beam with center beam attached. Install NEW front beam-to-frame 12-mm bolts but DO NOT tighten. Align match marks, and tighten center beam-to-rear beam bolts to specification. (Scheme 5) Tighten front beam-to-frame bolts to specification. Tighten lower arms and stabilizer (use NEW stabilizer lock nuts). See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49294-S25340527252001011500000).
  4. Install front mount bracket. Install NEW mount 12-mm through-bolt and tighten to specification. DO NOT tighten 10-mm engine side bolts. Tighten side mount-to-engine 12-mm nut and bolt. Tighten transmission mount-to-transmission nuts to specification. Tighten front mount bracket-to-engine bolts to specification.
  5. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW spring clips when installing axle shafts. Install axle shafts until spring clip clicks into groove of differential side gear. Ensure all wires and hoses are connected properly. Ensure cables are mounted properly.
  6. Adjust throttle cable tension. Ensure transmission range indicator agrees with actual transmission range. Adjust tension on accessory drive belts. Fill fluids to proper level. After installation is complete, turn ignition on for 2 seconds to allow fuel system to pressurize ( DO NOT start engine). Repeat procedure 2 or 3 times. Ensure no fuel system leaks exist. Bleed cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-49294-S32228594982001011500000). Enter anti-theft code for radio and enter preset radio stations. Check and adjust wheel alignment.
