PROGRAMMING
Note. Do not turn the ignition switch OFF while reprogramming PCM. If ignition switch is turned off, PCM may be damaged.
Use this procedure when you have to substitute a known-good PCM. Update PCM only if PCM does not already have the latest software loaded.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Do not start engine. Connect Honda Interface Module (HIM) to DLC, located behind left side of center console. Perform PCM update procedure as described on HIM label and in the PCM update system. If software in PCM is the latest version, substitute PCM. Go to next step.
- Remove PCM from vehicle. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152998-S03052722542003031000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Install a known-good PCM into vehicle. Rewrite the immobilizer code with PCM replacement procedure using Honda PGM Tester. Procedure allows you to start the engine. After completing tests, reinstall the original PCM and rewrite the immobilizer code with PCM replacement procedure using Honda PGM Tester again.
Gearshift Lever Cannot Be Moved From "P" Position With Brake Pedal Depressed
Possible cause: Fault in shift interlock system. See SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM under SYSTEM TESTS.
Ignition Key Cannot Be Moved From ACC To LOCK Position With Gearshift Lever In "P" Position
Possible cause: Fault in key interlock system. See KEY INTERLOCK SYSTEM under SYSTEM TESTS.
Gearshift Lever Cannot Be Moved From "N" To "R" Position With Brake Pedal Depressed
Possible cause: Fault in reverse interlock system. See REVERSE LOCK SYSTEM under SYSTEM TESTS.
Note. For shift interlock system circuit wire color and terminal identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .
Note. For additional information on multiplex control system, see appropriate MULTIPLEX CONTROL SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Press the brake pedal. Are the brake lights on? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair faulty brake light circuit. See appropriate EXTERIOR LIGHTS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Turn the ignition switch on (II).
- With the accelerator pedal released, press the brake pedal.
- Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminal E13 and body ground. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE»(ref-152998-S03052722542003031000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. see scheme 25 Is there battery voltage? If no, check for an open in the wire between PCM connector terminal E13 and the multiplex control unit. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152998-S06645266312003031000000). If the wire is okay, check for a loose terminal fit in the multiplex control unit connectors. If necessary, substitute a known-good multiplex control unit and recheck. If yes, go to next step.
- Turn the ignition switch off.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
- Disconnect PCM connectors "A" (31-pin) and "E" (31-pin).
- Reconnect the battery negative terminal.
- Press the brake pedal, and measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals E22 and A23 or A24. Is there battery voltage? If yes, release the brake pedal, and go to next step. If no, repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal E22 and the brake pedal position switch.
- Remove the under-dash fuse/relay box, and disconnect connector "E" (13-pin) from the fuse/relay box. see scheme 1
- Measure the voltage between the No. 3 terminal of connector "E" (13-pin) and body ground. (Scheme 92) Is there battery voltage while pushing the brake pedal? If yes, release the brake pedal, and go to next step. If no, repair open or short in the wire between the multiplex control unit and the brake pedal position switch via the No. 3 terminal of connector "E".
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
- Connect PCM connectors "A" (31-pin) and "E" (31-pin), and connector "E" (13-pin) from the fuse/relay box.
- Reconnect the battery negative terminal.
- Disconnect the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-152998-S15033410692003031000000) under COMPONENT TESTS.
- Turn the ignition switch on (II).
- With the accelerator pedal released, press the brake pedal, and measure the voltage between the No. 4 terminal of the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector and body ground. (Scheme 96) Is there battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open or short in the wire between the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector and under-dash fuse/relay box. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152998-S06645266312003031000000).
- Measure the voltage between the No. 3 and 4 terminals of the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector while pressing the brake pedal. Is there battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair open in the wire between the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector and the multiplex control unit.
- Connect the battery positive terminal to the No. 4 terminal of the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector, and connect the battery negative terminal to the No. 3 terminal. Check that the shift lock solenoid operates. Does the shift lock solenoid operate properly? If yes, check that the shift lock mechanism works properly. If the mechanism does not work, repair or replace the shift lever assembly. If necessary, substitute a known-good multiplex control unit and recheck. If no, replace the shift lock solenoid.

REVERSE LOCK SYSTEM
- Check whether the scan tool indicates DTCs P1705 or P1706. Does the scan tool indicate either DTC? If yes, diagnose and repair indicated DTCs. See «SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM»(ref-142955-S30837663432002081900000) in MCVA & MRVA DIAGNOSIS article. If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off.
- Shift the gearshift lever into the "P" position while pushing the shift lock release button. (Scheme 93)
- Turn ignition on.
- Press the brake pedal, and do not press the accelerator pedal. Shift the shift lever out of the "P" position. Check that the shift lock solenoid operates. Does the shift lock solenoid operate properly? If yes, check the reverse lock mechanism. If the mechanism does not work, repair or replace the shift lever assembly. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-152998-S15033410692003031000000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If no, go to «SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM»(ref-152998-S05374781602003031000000).

KEY INTERLOCK SYSTEM
- Turn the ignition switch to ACC (I) position.
- Remove screws from lower steering column cover. Separate and remove steering column covers. Disconnect the steering lock assembly connector.
- Check if the ignition key can be moved to LOCK (0) position, and remove the key from the cylinder. Is the ignition key able to move to LOCK (0) position, and to be removed? If yes, check for a short to power in the wire between the multiplex control unit and the key interlock solenoid connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152998-S06645266312003031000000) . If the wire is okay, replace the multiplex control unit. See appropriate MULTIPLEX CONTROL SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no, replace the ignition key cylinder/steering lock assembly. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
COMPONENT TESTS
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
- Remove the driver's dashboard lower cover. See «DASHBOARD LOWER COVER»(ref-152998-S35569288442003031000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Remove screws from lower steering column cover. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect the key switch connector (6-pin) from the steering lock assembly.
- Insert the ignition key in the key cylinder, then turn the ignition key to ACC (I) position.
- Connect the battery positive terminal to steering lock assembly connector terminal No. 4, and connect the battery negative terminal to No. 3 terminal. (Scheme 94) Make sure that the ignition key cannot be turned to LOCK (0) position. Release the battery terminals, and make sure that the key can be turned to LOCK (0) position and removed from cylinder.
- If the key interlock solenoid works improperly, replace the ignition key cylinder/steering lock assembly. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.

PARK PIN SWITCH

- Remove the driver's dashboard lower cover. See «DASHBOARD LOWER COVER»(ref-152998-S35569288442003031000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove the instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-152998-S03714836222002092300000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disconnect the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector. (Scheme 96)
- Check for continuity between the No. 1 and 2 terminals of the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector while the shift lever is in the "P" position, and when shift lever out of "P" or pushed to the left. In the "P" position, there should be no continuity. When out of the "P" position or pushed to the left, there should be continuity. If the park pin switch is okay, connect the connector and install the removed parts. If the park pin switch is faulty, go to next step for replacement.
- Shift the gearshift lever to the "R" position.
- Slide the lock tab down on the shift cable end holder. (Scheme 97)
- Grasp the shift cable lock in the middle with needle-nose pliers, and remove it from the shift cable end and shift cable end holder. (Scheme 97)
- Separate the shift cable end from the shift cable end holder.
- Rotate the socket holder on the shift cable a quarter turn, the tab on the socket holder will be in the opening of the socket holder bracket. Then slide the holder to remove the shift cable from the socket holder bracket. (Scheme 98)
- Remove the shift lever assembly. (Scheme 99)
- Remove the harness from the harness clamp on the shift lever bracket base, and remove the harness band from the harness.
- Pry up the tabs on the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector to release the lock. (Scheme 100)
- Remove the terminal from the connector by pushing the lock tab up in the connector using a thin blade screwdriver. Remove all 6 terminals.
- Remove the shift lever cover. (Scheme 101)
- Remove the control checker (A) from the shift lever, and remove the park pin switch from the control checker. (Scheme 95)
- Install the new park pin switch (B) by aligning its tab (C) with the positioning hole (D) on the control checker. Apply non-hardening thread lock sealant to the screw (E), then secure the park pin switch with the screw.
- Install the control checker on the shift lever.
- Route the harnesses, and clamp them as shown. (Scheme 103)
- Install the O/D switch harness terminals in the No. 5 and 6 cavities. Either O/D switch harness terminal can be installed in the No. 5 and 6 cavities. (Scheme 100)
- Install the park pin switch harness terminals in the No. 1 and 2 cavities. Either park pin switch harness terminal can be installed in the No. 1 and 2 cavities.
- Install the Blue harness terminal of the shift lock solenoid in the No. 3 cavity and the Red harness terminal in the No. 4 cavity. Make sure that all 6 terminals lock securely, then install the lock securely.
- Align the marks (A) on the harnesses, and tie the harness band (B) over the marks. Clamp the O/D switch harness (C).6" (15 mm) (D) from the harness band. (Scheme 104)
- Install the shift lever cover.
- Install the shift lever assembly. (Scheme 99)
- Turn the ignition switch on (II), and verify that the position indicator comes on.
- If necessary, push the shift cable until it stops, then release it. Pull the shift cable back one step so that the shift cable is in "R" position. (Scheme 105) Do not hold the shift cable guide (A) to adjust the shift cable (B).
- Turn the ignition switch off.
- Insert a.24" (6.0 mm) pin (A) into the positioning holes (B) on the shift lever bracket base and through the positioning hole (C) on the shift lever. (Scheme 106) The shift lever is secured in the "R" position.
- Rotate the socket holder on the shift cable to face the tab on the holder opposite to the opening in the socket holder bracket. (Scheme 98) Align the holder with the opening in the bracket, then slide the holder into the bracket. Rotate the holder a quarter turn to secure the shift cable. Do not install the shift cable by twisting the shift cable guide and damper.
- Install the shift cable end (A) in the shift cable end holder (B). (Scheme 107) Keep the shift cable end and end holder free of grease.
- Install the new shift cable lock to secure the shift cable end and shift cable end holder, then push the lock tab up until it stops to lock the joint. (Scheme 108)
- Remove the.24" (6.0 mm) pin that was installed to hold the shift lever.
- Connect the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector.
- Move the shift lever to each gear, and verify that the A/T gear position indicator follows the transmission range switch.
- Check that the park pin switch operates.
- Install the driver's dashboard lower cover. See «DASHBOARD LOWER COVER»(ref-152998-S35569288442003031000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Install the instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-152998-S03714836222002092300000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID

- Disconnect the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector. (Scheme 96)
- Connect the battery positive terminal to the No. 4 terminal of the O/D switch/shift lock solenoid/park pin switch connector, and connect the battery negative terminal to the No. 3 terminal.
- Check that the shift lever can be moved from the "P" position. Release the battery terminals, move the shift lever back to "P" position, and make sure it locks. If the shift lock solenoid works properly, connect the connector and install the removed parts. If the shift lock solenoid is faulty, go to next step for replacement.
- Shift the gearshift lever to the "R" position.

- Route the harnesses, and clamp them as shown. (Scheme 103)
- Install the O/D switch harness terminals in the No. 5 and 6 cavities. Either O/D switch harness terminal can be installed in the No. 5 and 6 cavities. (Scheme 100)
- Install the park pin switch harness terminals in the No. 1 and 2 cavities. Either park pin switch harness terminal can be installed in the No. 1 and 2 cavities.
- Install the Blue harness terminal of the shift lock solenoid in the No. 3 cavity and the Red harness terminal in the No. 4 cavity. Make sure that all 6 terminals lock securely, then install the lock securely.

DASHBOARD LOWER COVER

- Remove the screws (A) from the driver's dashboard lower cover (B). (Scheme 109) Pullout the bottom of the fuse lid (C) to release the clips (D), and pull it down to release the hooks (E). Remove the screw from the fuse lid opening. Open the pocket, then remove the screw.
- Pull out the bottom of the driver's dashboard lower cover (A) to release the clips. (Scheme 110)
- Remove the driver's dashboard lower cover (A). Pull out the upper portions of the cover to release the clips. If equipped, disconnect the cruise control main switch connector (B), moonroof switch connector (C), in-car temperature sensor connector (D), air hose (E), and seat heater switch connector (F). (Scheme 111)
- Install the cover in the reverse order of removal, and make sure that each connector is plugged in properly, and the air hose is connected properly.
