DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Note. Models equipped with a manual transmission use an Engine Control Module (ECM). Models equipped with an automatic transmission use a Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Because the operation of these components is similar, ECM will be referred to as a PCM.

Note. When there is no DTC stored, MIL will stay on if the SCS service connector is connected and ignition switch is on.

When directed by testing procedure to install test equipment, see TEST EQUIPMENT in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.

EVAP Purge Control Solenoid Valve Test

  1. Disconnect hose between intake manifold and EVAP purge control solenoid valve from EVAP purge control solenoid valve. Turn ignition on. Apply vacuum to exposed port. If vacuum does not hold, go to next step. If vacuum holds, EVAP purge control solenoid valve is okay at this time. Perform EVAP bypass solenoid valve test. See «EVAP BYPASS SOLENOID VALVE TEST»(ref-3105-S17705939622000041700000) .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP purge control solenoid valve connector. Check for continuity between ground and EVAP purge control solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace solenoid valve.
  3. Disconnect PCM 32-pin connector "A". Check for continuity between ground and EVAP purge control solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire). If continuity exists, repair short in Red/Yellow wire between EVAP purge control solenoid valve and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 6. If continuity does not exist, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. See SUBSTITUTING PCM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.

EVAP Bypass Solenoid Valve Test

  1. Disconnect vacuum hose from EVAP 2-way valve as illustrated. (Scheme 18) Using backprobe set, connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 3 (Blue wire). Turn ignition on. Using vacuum pump, slowly apply vacuum to EVAP 2-way valve as illustrated. (Scheme 18) If vacuum holds, go to next step. If vacuum does not hold, EVAP bypass solenoid valve and EVAP 2-way valve are okay at this time. Perform EVAP control canister vent shut valve test. See «EVAP CONTROL CANISTER VENT SHUT VALVE TEST»(ref-3105-S05992340172000041700000).
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP bypass solenoid valve connector. Check for continuity between ground and EVAP bypass solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (Blue wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Blue wire between EVAP bypass solenoid valve and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 3.
  3. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EVAP bypass solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire). If battery voltage exists, replace EVAP bypass solenoid valve and "O" rings. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/White wire between EVAP bypass solenoid valve and No. 15 ALTERNATOR SP SENSOR (7.5-amp) fuse, located in driver's side under dash fuse/relay box.

EVAP Control Canister Vent Shut Valve Test

  1. Disconnect vacuum hose from EVAP control canister filter as illustrated. (Scheme 19) Turn ignition on and apply vacuum to hose. If EVAP control canister vent shut valve holds a vacuum, go to next step. If EVAP control canister vent shut valve does not hold a vacuum, EVAP control canister vent shut valve is okay at this time. Perform vacuum hoses and connections test. See «VACUUM HOSES & CONNECTIONS TEST»(ref-3105-S33240072642000041700000).
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP control canister vent shut valve connector. Check for continuity between ground and EVAP control canister vent shut valve harness connector terminal No. 1 (Light Green/White wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace EVAP control canister vent shut valve and "O" rings.
  3. Disconnect PCM 32-pin connector "A". Check for continuity between ground and EVAP control canister vent shut valve harness connector terminal No. 1 (Light Green/White wire). If continuity exists, repair short in Light Green/White wire between EVAP control canister vent shut valve and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 4. If continuity does not exist, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. See SUBSTITUTING PCM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.

Vacuum Hoses & Connections Test

Check the following components for leaks to atmosphere and repair or replace as necessary

  1. Fuel tank leak.
  2. A faulty fuel filler cap.
  3. Fuel fill pipe.
  4. EVAP 2-way valve malfunction.
  5. Fuel tank pressure sensor malfunction.

If above components are okay, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. See SUBSTITUTING PCM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.

  1. Disconnect vacuum hose, located between EVAP purge control solenoid valve and intake manifold. Using backprobe set, connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire). Turn ignition on. Using vacuum pump, slowly apply vacuum to EVAP purge control solenoid valve. If solenoid valve holds vacuum, go to next step. If solenoid valve does not hold vacuum, solenoid valve is okay at this time. Perform EVAP bypass solenoid valve test. See «EVAP BYPASS SOLENOID VALVE TEST»(ref-3105-S15432643712000041700000) .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP purge control solenoid valve connector. Check for continuity between ground and EVAP purge control solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Red/Yellow wire between EVAP purge control solenoid valve and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 6. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  3. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EVAP purge control solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire). If battery voltage exists, replace solenoid valve. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between EVAP purge control solenoid valve and No. 15 ALTERNATOR SP SENSOR (7.5-amp) fuse, located in drivers side under dash fuse/relay box. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Disconnect vacuum hose from EVAP 2-way valve as illustrated. (Scheme 18) Turn ignition on. Using vacuum pump, slowly apply vacuum to EVAP 2-way valve as illustrated. (Scheme 18) If vacuum does not hold, go to next step. If vacuum holds, EVAP bypass solenoid valve and EVAP 2-way valve are okay at this time. Perform EVAP control canister vent shut valve test. See «EVAP CONTROL CANISTER VENT SHUT VALVE TEST»(ref-3105-S27393659262000041700000).
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP bypass solenoid valve connector. Check for continuity between ground and EVAP bypass solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (Blue wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace EVAP bypass solenoid valve and "O" rings.
  3. Disconnect PCM 32-pin connector "A". Check for continuity between ground and EVAP bypass solenoid valve harness connector terminal No. 2 ( Blue wire). If continuity exists, repair short in Blue wire between EVAP bypass solenoid valve and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 3. If continuity does not exist, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. See SUBSTITUTING PCM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. If symptom or problem goes away, replace original PCM.
  1. Disconnect vacuum hose from EVAP control canister filter as illustrated. (Scheme 19) Using backprobe set, connect a fused jumper wire between ground and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 4 (Light Green/White wire). Turn ignition on and apply vacuum to hose. If EVAP control canister vent shut valve does not hold a vacuum, go to next step. If EVAP control canister vent shut valve holds a vacuum, EVAP control canister vent shut valve is okay at this time. Perform canister system leak test. See «CANISTER SYSTEM LEAK TEST»(ref-3105-S12446202282000041700000).
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP control canister vent shut valve connector. Check for continuity between ground and EVAP control canister vent shut valve harness connector terminal No. 1 (Light Green/White wire). If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Light Green/White wire between EVAP control canister vent shut valve and PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 4. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  3. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and EVAP control canister vent shut valve harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). If battery voltage exists, replace EVAP control canister vent shut valve and "O" ring. If battery voltage does not exist, open in Black/White wire between EVAP control canister vent shut valve and No. 15 ALTERNATOR SP SENSOR (7.5-amp) fuse, located in drivers side under dash fuse/relay box. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

Canister System Leak Test

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect 2 "T" fittings and vacuum pump to hoses between EVAP control canister and EVAP 2-way valve as illustrated. (Scheme 20) Connect fuel tank pressure sensor to one "T" fitting and vacuum pump to second "T" fitting. (Scheme 20) Remove vent hose from EVAP control canister shut valve and cap open port. (Scheme 21) Turn ignition on and go to next step.
  2. Using backprobe set, measure voltage between PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 29 (Light Green wire) and 31-pin connector "C" terminal No. 18 (Green/Black wire), or using an scan tool monitor FTP sensor voltage. Using vacuum pump, slowly apply vacuum every 1-2 seconds until voltage reading drops to about 1.5 volts. Ensure engine coolant temperature is above 95°F (35°C). Monitor voltage for 20 seconds. If voltage does not drop to 1.5 volts and hold for 20 seconds, go to next step. If voltage drops to 1.5 volts and holds for at least 20 seconds, check EVAP control canister vent shut valve line and connections.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge hose form EVAP control canister. (Scheme 22) Cap open port. Turn ignition on. Using backprobe set, measure voltage between PCM 32-pin connector "A" terminal No. 29 (Light Green wire) and 31-pin connector "C" terminal No. 18 (Green/Black wire), or using an scan tool monitor FTP sensor voltage. Using vacuum pump, slowly apply vacuum every 1-2 seconds until voltage reading drops to about 1.5 volts. Ensure engine coolant temperature is above 95°F (35°C). Monitor voltage for 20 seconds. If voltage does not drop to 1.5 volts and hold for 20 seconds, replace EVAP control canister. If voltage drops to 1.5 volts and holds for at least 20 seconds, check EVAP purge control solenoid valve hose and connections. If valve hose and connections are okay, perform 2-way valve test. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING.
