Drive Assembly
Check pinion teeth for signs of chipping, cracking or excessive wear. Ensure pinion gear turns smoothly and does not turn in both directions. Check shift lever collar for deep scoring or other damage. If pinion is damaged, replace drive assembly. Also check flywheel for damage.
Frame & Field Assembly
Inspect field coil connections for opens between field terminal and connection points for insulated brushes on filed coil straps. Using self-powered test light or DVOM, check for continuity or grounds between frame and field terminal. Replace frame and field assembly if any opens or grounds exist.
OVERHAUL
Note. Starters with PG designation used on gasoline engines are not serviceable, and must be replaced as complete assemblies.
