Engine Removal - v8 GMC Vandura I

Van Models

1. Disconnect battery cables and drain cooling system. Remove coolant reservoir, grille, upper radiator support and lower grille valance. Disconnect ATF cooler lines (if equipped) and radiator hoses. If equipped with A/C, discharge system and remove condenser and vacuum reservoir.
2. Remove washer jar with bracket, radiator brackets, radiator and shroud. Remove air cleaner, air stove pipe and accelerator cable from carburetor. If equipped with power steering, remove pump and lay aside. Remove engine cover.
3. Disconnect wiring from firewall connection and remove carburetor. Remove thermostat housing, oil fill pipe and disconnect heater hoses. If equipped with cruise control, remove servo, transducer and bracket.
4. Raise vehicle. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove drive shaft and plug extension housing. Disconnect shift linkage. Disconnect fuel line from pump. Disconnect speedometer cable. Remove transmission mount bolts and engine mount bracket-to-frame bolts.
5. Drain crankcase. Remove engine mount through bolts. Raise engine slightly and remove engine mounts. Block up engine with wooden block between oil pan and crossmember. Lower vehicle and install lifting device. Remove engine and transmission as assembly.

All Other Models

1. Disconnect battery cables and drain cooling system. Remove hood, air cleaner, accessory drive belts, fan and water pump pulley. Disconnect all hoses, lines, linkage and wiring from engine. If equipped with A/C, remove compressor and lay aside.
2. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines (if equipped) and remove radiator with shroud. If equipped with power steering, remove pump and lay aside. Disconnect fuel line from fuel pump.
3. Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. On 4WD models with automatic transmission, remove strut rods at motor mounts. On all models, disconnect crossover pipe from exhaust manifold.
4. Remove flywheel or converter splash shield. Remove starter and wiring along right pan rail. Remove gas gauge wiring. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove converter-to-flex plate attaching bolts.
5. Support transmission and remove bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Remove lower engine mount bracket-to-frame bolts. Lower vehicle and attach lifting device. Remove engine.

1. Disconnect batteries. Remove headlight bezels, grille, bumper and lower grille valance. Remove washer jar, upper fan shroud and tie bar, and engine cover. If equipped with A/C, discharge system, disconnect condenser lines and remove condenser.
2. Disconnect low coolant wire. Drain cooling system. Disconnect engine oil and ATF cooler lines, and both radiator hoses at radiator. Remove radiator and fan assembly. Scribe or paint mark on front cover and injection pump flange and remove fuel injection pump.
3. Raise vehicle. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove inspection cover, flex plate-to-converter bolts, and motor mount through bolts. Disconnect block heater at element and ground wire-to-block. Remove bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Remove starter.
4. Lower vehicle. If equipped with cruise control, remove transducer. If equipped with A/C, remove rear brace, disconnect lines at compressor, and remove brackets and compressor. If equipped with power steering, remove pump and position aside. Remove oil fill tube upper bracket and glow plug relay.
5. Disconnect oil pressure sender and loom. Remove air cleaner resonator and bracket. Remove transmission fill tube nut. Disconnect heater, radiator and by-pass hoses at crossover. Remove alternator upper bracket and coolant crossover. Disconnect fuel lines at fuel pump. Install lifting device. Remove engine.

1. Disconnect batteries. Raise vehicle. Remove transmission dust cover. Disconnect torque converter and exhaust pipe. Remove starter. Remove bellhousing bolts and left and right motor mount bolts.
2. Disconnect block heaters. Remove wire harness, ATF cooler lines and front battery cable clamp at oil pan. Disconnect fuel return and oil cooler lines at engine. Remove lower fan shroud bolts. Lower vehicle. Remove hood and drain cooling system.
3. Remove air cleaner with resonator and primary filter from cowl. Disconnect ground cable at alternator bracket, alternator wires and clips. Disconnect TPS, EGR/EPR and fuel cut-off at injection pump. Remove harness from clips at rocker covers and disconnect glow plugs.
4. Disconnect EGR/EPR solenoids, glow plug controller, temperature sender and move harness aside. Disconnect left side ground strap. Remove fan, upper radiator hoses at engine, and fan shroud. Remove power steering pump and belt. Remove power steering reservoir and position aside.
5. Disconnect vacuum at cruise servo and accelerator cable at injection pump. Disconnect heater hose and lower radiator hose at engine. Disconnect oil cooler lines, heater hose and overflow at radiator.
6. Disconnect ATF cooler lines. Remove upper radiator cover, radiator and detent cable. Support transmission and remove engine.

7.4L

1. Remove hood. Disconnect battery. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses. Remove radiator and fan shroud. Disconnect all hoses, lines, linkage and wiring from engine.
2. Remove power steering pump and A/C compressor, if equipped. Raise vehicle. Drain crankcase. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and torque converter bracket at transmission rear mount. Remove starter.
3. Remove bellhousing cover. Remove flex plate-to-converter attaching bolts. Remove mount through bolts and bellhousing-to-engine bolts.
4. Lower vehicle. Using floor jack, raise transmission. Attach lifting device and raise engine. Remove motor mount-to-engine brackets. Remove engine.
