Engine Oil Pan Removal - v8 GMC Vandura I

5.0 & 5.7L

  1. Raise vehicle. Drain engine oil. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. On models with automatic transmission, remove converter housing below pan.
  2. On 4WD pickup models with automatic transmission, remove strut rods at engine mounts. On all models, remove oil pan bolts and oil pan. Clean all gasket surfaces.

Van Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover, engine oil and transmission oil dipsticks. Disconnect engine dipstick tube at left rocker cover.
  2. Disconnect transmission dipstick at bellhousing and pull from transmission. Disconnect T.V. cable at injection pump rod and at transmission dipstick tube.
  3. Remove upper bellhousing bolt and vacuum pump. Raise vehicle. Remove drive shaft. Disconnect speedometer cable at transmission.
  4. Disconnect torque converter clutch connector, shift linkage and ATF cooler lines at transmission. Remove flex plate inspection cover and flex plate-to-torque converter bolts.
  5. Support transmission. Remove transmission mount-to-crossmember nut and remove crossmember. Remove bellhousing-to-cylinder case bolts.
  6. Remove transmission and flex plate. Remove dipstick tube from engine oil pan. Drain crankcase. Disconnect engine oil cooler lines at cylinder case. Remove starter.
  7. Disconnect battery and cooler line clips. Remove oil pan bolts. Lower pan from block. Remove oil pump to main cap bolt, disconnect pump drive shaft and let assembly fall in pan. Remove oil pan.

Note. It may be necessary to rotate crankshaft so that forward throw and No. 1 and 2 journals are up, giving front of pan clearance.

All Other Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cables. Raise vehicle and drain engine oil. Remove transmission dust cover.
  2. Remove oil pan bolts. Remove left engine mount through bolt. Raise engine and remove oil pan. Clean mating surfaces of oil and old gasket.
  3. When installing, apply 1/32" bead of sealer on entire oil pan sealing flange. Sealer must be wet to touch when bolts are tightened.

7.4L

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Loosen fan shroud. Remove air cleaner and distributor cap. Raise vehicle and drain oil. On manual transmission models, remove starter.
  2. On all models, remove lower bellhousing cover. Remove oil filter. On gauge equipped models, remove oil pressure line from block. NOTE: Pressure line is removed to prevent damage when engine is lifted.
  3. On all models, remove front engine mount through bolts. Raise engine and remove oil pan bolts. Remove oil pan and clean all gasket surfaces.
