Remove oil pan. See the ENGINE OIL PAN REMOVAL - V8 article in this section. Remove pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt, and remove pump and extension shaft.

Disassembly

Remove pump cover. If necessary, remove inlet tube and screen assembly. Mark gears at a meshing point, so they may be reassembled with same gear teeth indexing. Remove gears. (Scheme 8)

Oil Pump Assembly Be sure to mark gears at a meshing point, before pump disassembly. Scheme 8

Scheme 8: Oil Pump Assembly Be sure to mark gears at a meshing point, before pump disassembly.

Inspection

  1. Wash all parts and dry with compressed air. Inspect pump body and cover for cracks or excessive wear. Inspect pump gears for damage or excessive wear. If pump gears or body are damaged or worn, replace entire pump assembly.
  2. Check drive gear shaft for looseness in pump body. Inspect oil inlet tube and screen assembly for damage. Check pressure regulator valve for fit in bore.

Reassembly

If removed, install oil inlet tube and screen assembly. Apply sealer to end of tube, and tap tube into place, using plastic hammer. Install pump gears into pump body, with marked gear teeth indexing. Idler gear must be installed with smooth side of gear toward cover opening. Reassemble remaining components in reverse order of disassembly.

Installation

Prime oil pump with engine oil. Assemble pump and extension shaft to engine. Ensure slot on top of extension shaft engages with drive tang on end of distributor shaft. Install and tighten attaching bolt. Install oil pan.

See ENGINE OIL PAN REMOVAL - V8 article in this section.

Remove oil pan. Remove pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt. Remove oil pump and extension shaft.

  1. Remove pump cover attaching screws and pump cover. Mark gears so they may be reassembled with same tooth indexing. Remove idler gear, drive gear and shaft from pump housing.
  2. Remove pressure regulator valve retaining pin from pump cover. Remove regulator valve from pump cover. Do not disassemble pickup screen and pipe. Screen and pipe are only serviced as an assembly with the pump.

Note. If pump gears or body are damaged or worn, replacement of entire pump assembly is necessary.

Reassembly & Installation

Clean and check all parts for fit and wear. Reverse removal and disassembly procedure to assemble and install. Smooth side of idler gear faces cover. Check operation of pump before installing.

Note. Bottom of screen must be parallel with bottom of pan.

See ENGINE OIL PAN REMOVAL - V8 article in this section.

Oil Pump Removal & Disassembly

  2. Remove pressure regulator from pump cover. Mark gears so they may be reassembled with same teeth indexing. Remove idler gear, drive gear, and shaft from pump body.
  3. Remove pressure regulator valve retaining pin, pressure regulator valve, washer, and spring. Examine pickup screen and pipe. If screen or pipe are damaged, pump must be replaced as assembly. Screen and pipe assembly are welded to pump body.

Check operation of oil pump. Check all parts for fit and wear. If pump gears or body are damaged or worn, replacement of entire pump assembly is necessary. Reverse removal and disassembly procedure to assemble and install.
