Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Drain cooling system.
  2. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect necessary electrical connections, fuel lines, coolant hoses, vacuum hoses and control cables from throttle body and intake manifold.
  3. Disconnect electrical connections from distributor. Remove timing belt. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-49003-S08349488332001011500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector.
  4. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold. Lower vehicle. Remove valve cover. Loosen lock nut and rocker arm adjusting screws to ensure all valves are closed.
  5. Loosen cylinder head bolts evenly in 3 steps to prevent cylinder head warpage. Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds (if necessary).

Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate cylinder head bolts with engine oil before installing. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence to specification. (Scheme 1) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49003-S24116097562001011500000).
  2. Adjust valve clearance. See «VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT»(ref-49003-S23522838772001011500000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  3. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49003-S24116097562001011500000).
