BRAKE LINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE
BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT
Remove power brake unit. Measure distance between power brake unit mounting surface (with gasket installed) and center of brake push rod clevis pin. Correct distance is 4.94" (125.5 mm).
Scheme 5
BRAKE PEDAL FREE PLAY
Note. Brake pedal free play adjustment procedure is not available from manufacturer.
BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
- With engine off, pump brake pedal until all vacuum is exhausted from power brake unit. Push brake pedal with a force of approximately 66 lbs. (30 kg). Measure distance between brake pedal face and floor.
- Distance must not be less than 5.1" (130 mm). If measured distance is less than specified, check for air in hydraulic system, worn rear brake shoes, defective rear brake self-adjusters and improper brake pedal push rod adjustment.
PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKE
Note. Ensure rear brakes are correctly adjusted before adjusting parking brake. See REAR BRAKE SHOES under ADJUSTMENTS .
- Using 44-55 lbs. (20-25 kg), apply parking brake lever, and count number of notches lever travels. Adjustment is okay if lever clicks 7-9 notches.
- If parking brake cable adjustment is required, remove parking brake lever assembly trim cover. Loosen parking brake cable lock nut. Turn cable adjusting nut as required to obtain correct number of clicks at parking brake lever. After adjustment, check for brake drag with parking brake off.
REAR BRAKE SHOES
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel and brake drum. Install drum-to-shoe Clearance Gauge (J-22364-01) so gauge measures inside diameter of brake drum. Remove and reverse gauge to measure brake shoe linings.
- Position gauge over brake shoe lining. Turn self-adjuster until primary and secondary brake shoes contact gauge. Reinstall brake drum and wheel. Lower vehicle. Check brake fluid. Road test vehicle for proper brake system operation.
STOPLIGHT SWITCH
Pull up and hold brake pedal. Measure distance between face of brake pedal arm and stoplight switch. (Scheme 6) Distance should be.02-.04" (.5-1.0 mm). Adjust stoplight switch if distance is not within specification. Tighten stoplight switch lock nut to 10 ft. lbs. (14 N.m).
Scheme 6
PUSH ROD
- Place Booster Piston Rod Gauge (J-39567) on master cylinder with master cylinder gasket in place. Lower booster piston rod gauge pin until its tip just touches end of master cylinder primary piston. (Scheme 7)
- Remove booster piston rod gauge, turn it upside down, and place it on front of brake booster assembly. (Scheme 8) No clearance should be present between master cylinder primary piston and booster piston rod.
- If clearance is present, adjust booster piston rod length by turning adjustment nut at end of piston rod until rod just touches master cylinder primary piston.

FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER
| WARNING | DO NOT place fingers in front of caliper piston when forcing piston from cylinder bore. |
