Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge refrigerant from system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect compressor clutch electrical connector. Remove drive belt.
  2. Disconnect discharge and suction manifolds from compressor and plug openings. Remove 4 compressor-to-mounting bracket bolts. Remove compressor from vehicle.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedures. See COMPRESSOR OIL CHECKING article, for amount of oil required to maintain system.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANE»(ref-39075-S40535536452001011200000) L R & I in this article. Discharge refrigerant from A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment, at service valve, located on suction line. Remove high and low pressure hoses. Cap hoses to prevent entrance of dirt and excessive moisture.
  2. Disconnect liquid line and accumulator-drier inlet tube from evaporator core at dash panel and cap refrigerant lines.
  3. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core tubes and plug hoses. Cap heater core tubes to prevent coolant loss. Disconnect vacuum supply hose (Black) from in-line vacuum check valve in engine compartment.
  4. Disconnect blower motor wiring. In engine compartment, remove 2 evaporator case-to-dash panel nuts. In passenger compartment, remove evaporator case support bracket-to-cowl top panel screw.
  5. Remove evaporator case-to-dash panel bracket. Carefully pull evaporator case from dash panel. Remove evaporator case. Remove 4 heater core access cover screws and access cover from evaporator case. Remove tube seal from heater core tubes. Slide heater core and seals from evaporator case.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new "O" rings lubricated with clean refrigerant oil. Leak test, evacuate and recharge refrigeration system. Fill cooling system

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect underhood wiring at left side of firewall. Working inside vehicle, disengage wiring connector from left side kick panel. Push wiring harness into passenger compartment.
  2. Remove steering column lower trim cover by removing 3 screws at bottom and one screw on left side. Pull trim panel to disengage 5 snap-in retainers across top. Remove 6 steering column lower opening reinforcement panel screws.
  3. Remove steering column upper and lower shrouds. Disconnect wiring from steering column. Remove shift interlock switch. Disconnect steering column lower universal joint. Support steering column and remove 4 column-to-support nuts. Remove steering column from vehicle.
  4. Remove parking brake bracket-to-instrument panel screw. Install steering column lower opening reinforcement, using 4 screws (one on each corner) to prevents instrument panel twisting during removal.
  5. Remove right and left cowl side trim panels. Remove console assembly from vehicle. Remove 2 instrument panel-to-floor tunnel nuts. Open glove box, squeeze sides of bin and lower glove box lid.
  6. From underneath instrument panel and through glove box opening, disconnect wiring and A/C-heater vacuum lines and control cables. Remove 2 screws at right side retaining instrument panel to cowl side. Remove 2 screws at left side retaining instrument panel to cowl side.
  7. Remove right and left upper finish panels by pulling up to disengage snap-in retainers. (There are 3 retainers on right side, and 4 on left side.) Remove 4 instrument panel-to-cowl top screws. Remove right and left door rail trim panel. Remove door frame weatherstrip.
  8. Carefully pull instrument panel from cowl and disconnect remaining wiring or controls. Remove instrument panel from vehicle.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Install steering column opening lower reinforcement on replacement panel before installing in vehicle.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Insert control panel Remover Tool (T87P-19061-A) in retaining clip access holes on both sides of control assembly. Apply side load away from control assembly to disengage clips. Pull control assembly from instrument panel opening and disconnect wire connectors. Disconnect vacuum harness and temperature control cable from control assembly.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Position control assembly in instrument panel opening. Engage control assembly in instrument panel track and push until it latches firmly in place.
