- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-212128).
- Disconnect the tubes, loosen the clamps and remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.
- Remove the pin-type retainers and the snow shield.
- Disconnect the accelerator cable, speed control cable and throttle return spring from the throttle body.
- Remove the bolts and position the accelerator cables and bracket aside.
- Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor and the intake air control (IAC) electrical connectors. Detach the harness retainer from the throttle body stud bolt.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose and the evaporative emissions (EVAP) return tube.
- Remove the upper intake manifold support bracket bolt and nut. Position the bracket and harness aside.
- Loosen the nut and disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube from the EGR valve.
- Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tube from the upper intake manifold.
- Disconnect the fuel supply manifold pressure sensor vacuum tube.
- Disconnect the PCV tube from the PCV valve and remove the tube.
- Disconnect the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid and intake manifold runner control (IMRC) electrical connectors. Detach the pin-type harness retainer from the upper intake manifold.
- Detach the spark plug wire holder from the valve cover stud and disconnect the radio interference capacitor electrical connector.
- Remove the bolts and the upper intake manifold.

- Inspect the upper intake manifold gaskets and install new gaskets as necessary. Install the upper intake manifold. Tighten bolts in two stages in the sequence shown. Stage 1: Tighten the bolts hand tight. Stage 2: Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Attach the spark plug wire holder to the valve cover stud and connect the radio interference capacitor electrical connector.
- Connect the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid and IMRC electrical connectors. Attach the pin-type harness retainer to the upper intake manifold.
- Connect the PCV tube from the PCV valve.
- Connect the fuel supply manifold pressure sensor vacuum tube.
- Connect the PCV tube to the upper intake manifold.
- Connect the EGR tube to the EGR valve and tighten the fitting.
- Position the upper intake manifold support bracket and install bolt and nut.
- Connect the vacuum hose and the EVAP return tube.
- Connect the TP sensor and the IAC electrical connectors. Attach the harness retainer from the throttle body stud bolt.
- Position the accelerator cable bracket and install the bolts.
- Connect the accelerator cable, speed control cable and throttle return spring to the throttle body.
- Install the pin-type retainers and the snow shield.
- Position the air cleaner outlet pipe, connect the tubes and tighten the clamps.

- Disconnect the fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor electrical and vacuum connections.

- Remove the fuel injection supply manifold and fuel injectors as an assembly.
- Disconnect the heater hose and engine coolant temperature (ECT) sender electrical connector.
- Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector and the degas bottle hose.
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing.

- Remove the bolts and the lower intake manifold.
- Remove the intake manifold gaskets and the end seals.

- Using metal surface cleaner, clean all the sealing surfaces.
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant at the four cylinder block-to-cylinder head seams.
- Install the lower intake manifold gaskets and end seals. Position the intake manifold gaskets. Position the intake manifold end seals.
- Install the intake manifold. Tighten the bolts in two stages in the sequence shown. Stage 1: Tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft). Stage 2: Tighten to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft).
- Install the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. For additional information, refer to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-212108).
- Connect the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
- Connect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector and the degas bottle hose.
- Connect the heater hose and the ECT sender electrical connector.
- Install the fuel injection supply manifold and fuel injectors as an assembly.
- Connect the fuel injector electrical connectors.
- Connect the fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor electrical and vacuum connections.

- Disconnect and remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
- Remove the bolts and the crankshaft pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft damper bolt and washer.
- Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft damper.

- Install the crankshaft damper. Coat the sealing surfaces of the crankshaft damper with clean engine oil. Coat the crankshaft damper keyway with silicone gasket and sealant. Install the crankshaft damper.
- Install the crankshaft damper bolt and the washer.
- Install and connect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
- Install the crankshaft pulley.
- Install the splash shield. For additional information, refer to «FRONT END BODY PANELS»(ref-212142).
- Install the RH front wheel.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING»(ref-165355).

- Remove the crankshaft pulley. For additional information, refer to «CRANKSHAFT PULLEY»(ref-212098-S36512369942005122300000).
- Remove the crankshaft oil seal.
