- Verify the customer concern.

- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle: check that the program card is correctly installed. check the connections to the vehicle. check the ignition switch position.
- If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool manual.
- Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with: CAN or ISO circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-233719) . No response/not equipped for SJB, refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-233722) . System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out the self test diagnostics for the SJB.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the «SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX»(ref-233731-S08303961702006052600000) to continue diagnostics.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-233731-S21909369872006052600000) .

- B2 CHECK CIRCUIT 1050 (LG/VT) FOR VOLTAGE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C2331. Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between the ignition switch C250 pin 2, circuit 1050 (LG/VT), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes : GO to B3 . No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B3 CHECK CIRCUIT 297 (BK/LG) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) C2280b. Measure the resistance between the ignition switch C2331 pin 3, circuit 297 (BK/LG), harness side and the SJB C2280b pin 17, circuit 297 (BK/LG), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to B4 . No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- B4 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION Key in OFF position. Disconnect all the SJB connectors. Check for: corrosion pushed-out pins Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they are seated correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-233722) . REPEAT the self-test. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. Yes : GO to C4 . No : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

- D1 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) Key in OFF position. Disconnect: SJB Fuse 21 (15A). Key in START position. Measure the voltage between the SJB fuse cavity 21, input side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes : GO to D4 . No : GO to D2 .
- D2 CHECK CIRCUIT 32 (RD/LB) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: SJB C2280b. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C2331. Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280b pin 33, circuit 32 (RD/LB), harness side and the ignition switch C2331 pin 5, circuit 32 (RD/LB), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to D3 . No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- D3 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH Carry out the ignition switch component test. Refer to «COMPONENT TESTING»(ref-233803) for component testing. Is the ignition switch OK ? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. PINPOINT TEST E: THE IGNITION KEY IS HARD TO TURN
- E1 CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL POSITION NOTE: The ignition lock cylinder should return from the START position back to the ON position without assistance. Check to see if the steering wheel is turned and locked full left or full right. Is the steering wheel locked full left or full right? Yes : Apply turning effort to the steering wheel in the direction of the lock while turning the key to the ON position. TEST the system for normal operation. No : GO to E2 .
- E2 CHECK THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER KEY Check the ignition lock cylinder key for burrs, damage or incorrect key cut. Is the key OK? Yes : GO to E3 . No : REPLACE the ignition key. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E3 CHECK THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS»(ref-233732) . Check the ignition lock cylinder by rotating the ignition lock cylinder through all of the switch positions. Does the ignition lock cylinder stick or bind in any of the positions? Yes : INSTALL a new ignition lock cylinder. REFER to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS»(ref-233732) . No : GO to E4 .
- E4 CHECK THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER HOUSING Check for a binding or sticking ignition switch actuating rod, burrs around the rack and pinion actuator in the ignition lock cylinder housing, or insufficient lube. Is the ignition switch actuating rod, rack and pinion actuator and lubrication OK? Yes : INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «IGNITION SWITCH - LATE BUILD»(ref-233731-S14460919342006052600000) . TEST the system for normal operation. No : REPAIR or LUBRICATE as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

- I2 CHECK CIRCUIT 32 (RD/LB) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: SJB C2280b. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250. Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280b pin 33, circuit 32 (RD/LB), harness side and the ignition switch C250 pin STA, circuit 32 (RD/LB), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to I3 . No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- I3 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH Carry out the ignition switch component test. Refer to «COMPONENT TESTING»(ref-233803) for component testing. Is the ignition switch OK ? Yes : REPAIR circuit 1050 (LG/VT). TEST the system for normal operation. No : INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «IGNITION SWITCH - EARLY BUILD»(ref-233731-S00890529542006052600000) . PINPOINT TEST J: THE IGNITION KEY IS HARD TO TURN

Check the ignition lock cylinder by rotating the ignition lock cylinder through all of the switch positions. Does the ignition lock cylinder stick or bind in any of the positions? Yes : INSTALL a new ignition lock cylinder. REFER to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS»(ref-233732) . No : GO to J4 .

- Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-233724) .
- Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder. Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch lock cylinder and turn to the RUN position. Push the ignition switch lock cylinder release tab with a punch while pulling out the ignition switch lock cylinder.
- If equipped, remove the tilt wheel handle.
- Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds. Remove the screws. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
- Remove the multifunction switch. Remove the screws. Disconnect the electrical connectors. Remove the multifunction switch.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(ref-233728) .
- Remove the 2 lower instrument panel steering column cover screws and the cover.
- Remove the 2 instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement.
- Remove the ignition switch. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the 2 screws.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Repower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(ref-233728) .

- Remove the 2 lower instrument panel steering column cover screws and the cover.
- Remove the 2 instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement.
- Remove the ignition switch. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolts.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Repower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(ref-233728) .
