WARNINGDo not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury.
WARNINGFuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before servicing or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard.

  1. Remove the fuel pump relay.
  2. Start the engine and allow it to idle until it stalls.
  3. After the engine stalls, crank the engine for approximately 5 seconds to make sure the fuel injection supply manifold pressure has been released.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  5. When fuel system service is complete, install the fuel pump relay.
  6. Cycle the ignition key and wait three seconds to pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks before starting the engine.
  7. Start the vehicle and check the fuel system for leaks. NOTE: If fuel system pressure testing is necessary, carry out the following steps.
  8. Disconnect the fuel tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «SPRING LOCK COUPLING»(ref-233735-S08531288812006052600000) .
  9. Install the special tool.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-233684) .
  2. Release the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE - 3.0L (2V)»(ref-233735-S25202682022006052600000) or «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-233735-S13309515052006052600000) .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-233724) .
  4. Remove the fuel tank filler cap.
  5. Insert the special tool into the fuel tank filler pipe until it reaches the fuel tank spout.
  6. Attach the Fuel Storage Tanker to the Fuel Drain Hose and remove any residual fuel in the fuel tank filler neck.
  7. Using suitable hose pinching pliers, clamp the fuel tank filler hose in the location shown in illustration.
  8. Release the clamp to the fuel tank filler tube and remove. Disconnect the three quick connect couplings from the fuel tank tubes.
  9. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  10. Disconnect the fuel filter inlet hose.
  11. Position a suitable lifting device under the fuel tank.
  12. Remove the two fuel tank support strap bolts (one shown).
  13. Lower the fuel tank to access the fuel pump module while swinging the fuel tank support straps away from the fuel tank.
  14. Clean the area around the fuel pump mounting flange.
  15. Disconnect the fuel pump module electrical connector and the fuel pump module fuel outlet tube.
  16. Using the special tool, remove the fuel pump module retaining ring.
  17. Turn the fuel pump module counterclockwise and the fuel pump module will release from the locking tabs. Remove the fuel pump module from the fuel tank.
