Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) System
| CAUTION | Do not remove the PCV system from the engine. Operating engine without the PCV system will reduce both fuel economy and engine ventilation. This will weaken engine performance and shorten engine life. |
The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system cycles crankcase gases back through the engine where they are burned. The crankcase ventilation tube on the 3.0L 4V has been combined as part of the cam cover and is not serviced separately. The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve
- regulates the amount of ventilating air and blow-by fuel vapor to the intake manifold.
- prevents backfire from traveling into the crankcase.
- is mounted in a vertical position.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is designed to
- reintroduce exhaust gas into the combustion cycle.
- lower combustion temperatures.
- reduce the formation of nitrous oxide.
The amount of exhaust gas reintroduced and the timing of the cycle varies by calibration. Timing and volume are controlled by the following
- engine RPM
- engine vacuum
- exhaust system backpressure
- engine coolant temperature
- throttle position
The EGR valve is vacuum actuated.
The differential pressure feedback EGR system
- monitors EGR flow rate by the pressure drop across the metering orifice.
- uses a differential pressure feedback EGR sensor as the feedback device.
- controls pressure that is varied by the valve movement using vacuum output of the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid.
- uses the EGR valve only as a pressure regulator, rather than a flow metering device.
- allows for a more accurate assessment of EGR flow requirements.
- sends the PCM a signal indicating exhaust pressure.
Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal
Vacuum hoses on the engine use a color stripe to aid in hose routing checks. The stripe will usually be the same color as on the vehicle emission control information decal, but the correct vacuum hose routing must be verified by using the correct component connections shown on the decal.

- Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve (9D475). Disconnect the vacuum line. Disconnect EGR tube nut.
- Remove the EGR valve. Remove the two bolts. Remove and discard the gasket.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Carefully clean both sealing surfaces and install a new EGR valve gasket.
Scheme 3
- Remove the EGR valve (9D475). Disconnect the vacuum line. Disconnect the EGR tube. Remove the EGR valve and discard the gaskets.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Carefully clean all sealing surfaces and install new EGR valve gaskets.

- Disconnect the EGR valve tube at the EGR valve.
- Disconnect the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor.
- Disconnect the EGR tube nut at the exhaust manifold.
- Remove the EGR tube from the vehicle.
- If a new EGR tube is being installed, transfer the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube nut at the manifold connector.
- Remove the differential pressure feedback EGR system vacuum hoses from the EGR tube.
- Remove the nuts and the EGR tube. Discard the gasket.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Clean both sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner. Install a new EGR valve gasket.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-233724) .
- Release the pin-type wire retainer from the differential pressure feedback exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) sensor.
- Remove the differential pressure feedback EGR system. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor from the vacuum hoses.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-233724) . Vehicles with roll restrictor support bar
- Disconnect the emission hoses.
- Remove the RH roll restrictor support bar through-bolt.
- Remove the LH roll restrictor support bracket through-bolt.
- Remove the roll restrictor support bar. Remove the LH side roll restrictor support bar through-bolt. Remove the two upper bracket bolts. Remove the lower bracket nut. Remove the bracket. Remove the roll restrictor support. All vehicles
- Disconnect the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the vacuum hoses. Remove the nuts and the differential pressure feedback EGR system.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-233724) .
- Disconnect and remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) vacuum regulator solenoid. Disconnect the electrical connector. Disconnect the vacuum hoses. Remove the retaining screws and EGR vacuum regulator solenoid.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve tube quick-connect from the PCV valve.
- Remove the PCV valve. Disconnect the PCV valve electrical connector. Rotate to release and remove the PCV valve.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve tube from the PCV valve.
- Rotate to release and remove the PCV valve.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Remove the vent tubes.
- Inspect for damage and install new vent tubes, as necessary.
