Removal and Installation

WARNINGBefore working on or disconnecting any of the fuel tubes or fuel system components, relieve the fuel system pressure to prevent accidental spraying of fuel. Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure, even when the engine is not running. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
WARNINGDo not smoke, carry lighted tobacco or have an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
WARNINGDo not carry personal electronic devices such as cell phones, pagers or audio equipment of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
WARNINGAlways disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery when working on an evaporative emission (EVAP) system or fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-365408) .
  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-365413) .
  3. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the Throttle Body (TB).
  4. If equipped, disconnect the speed control actuator cable from the TB .
  5. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  6. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
  7. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) motor electrical connector.
  8. Disconnect the EGR valve vacuum hose connector.
  9. Disconnect the exhaust manifold-to-EGR valve tube from the EGR valve. To install, tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
  10. Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) purge valve-to-intake manifold hose from the intake manifold.
  11. Disconnect the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid electrical connector.
  12. Disconnect the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid vacuum connector.
  13. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the intake manifold.
  14. NOTE: It is important to twist the spark plug wire boots while pulling upward to avoid possible damage to the spark plug wire. NOTE: Spark plug wires must be connected to the correct ignition coil terminal. Mark the spark plug wire locations before removing them. Disconnect the RH spark plug wires from the ignition coil.
  15. Detach the RH spark plug wire retainer from the intake manifold and position the spark plug wires aside.
  16. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
  17. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the ignition coil bracket.
  18. Detach the accelerator cable retainer from the ignition coil bracket.
  19. Disconnect the radio interference capacitor electrical connector.
  20. Remove the 4 bolts and position the ignition coil and bracket aside. To install, tighten the lower rear bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). To install, tighten the lower front bolt to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). To install, tighten the 2 upper bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  21. Disconnect the vacuum harness main vacuum connector from the intake manifold.
  22. Remove the wiring harness-to-cowl bracket nut.
  23. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  24. Remove the wiring harness ground wire stud bolt and position the wiring harness aside. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  25. Detach the Knock Sensor (KS) electrical connector from the intake manifold.
  26. Loosen the 8 bolts and lift up the intake manifold. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  27. Remove the 2 heated PCV fitting bolts and detach the heated PCV fitting from the intake manifold. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  28. Remove the intake manifold.
  29. Inspect the intake manifold gaskets. Install new gaskets if necessary.
  30. NOTE: If the engine is repaired or replaced because of upper engine failure, typically including valve or piston damage, check the intake manifold for metal debris. If metal debris is found, install a new intake manifold. Failure to follow these instructions can result in engine damage.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 245: Removal and Installation
  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-365413) .
  3. Remove the upper radiator hose.
  4. Disconnect the vacuum reservoir hose.
  5. Disconnect the crankcase breather hose. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission
  6. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator tube nut and position the tube aside. To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). All vehicles
  7. Disconnect the heated PCV coolant hose from the intake manifold heated PCV fitting.
  8. Disconnect the heater hose from the thermostat housing.
  9. Disconnect the heater hose from the front lower heater tube assembly.
  10. Disconnect the heater hose from the rear upper heater tube assembly.
  11. Disconnect the heater hose from the rear lower heater tube assembly.
  12. Remove the 2 heater tube assembly bolts. To install, tighten the rear bolt to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). To install, tighten the front bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
  13. Lift the heater tube assembly and detach the wiring harness retainer. Remove the heater tube assembly.
  14. Disconnect the heater hose from the heater core and position the heater hose aside.
  15. Disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  16. Detach the MAF sensor wiring harness retainer from the generator wiring harness and position the MAF sensor wiring harness aside.
  17. NOTE: It is important to twist the spark plug wire boots while pulling upward to avoid possible damage to the spark plug wire. NOTE: Spark plug wires must be connected to the correct spark plug. Mark spark plug wire locations before removing them. NOTE: Apply silicone brake caliper grease and dielectric compound to the inside of the spark plug wire boots before connecting them. Using the Spark Plug Wire Remover, disconnect the RH spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  18. Detach the spark plug wire retainer from the valve cover stud bolt and position the spark plug wires aside.
  19. Disconnect the RH fuel injector electrical connectors.
  20. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the valve cover stud bolt and position the wiring harness aside.
  21. Loosen the 6 bolt and grommet assemblies and remove the RH valve cover. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  22. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Clean the sealing surfaces and inspect the RH valve cover gasket. Install a new gasket if necessary.
  23. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

ITEM DESCRIPTION

  1. Detach the accelerator cable from the Throttle Body (TB) and the accelerator cable bracket.
  2. Detach the exhaust manifold-to-EGR valve tube from the EGR valve. To install, tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
  3. Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) purge valve-to-intake manifold tube from the intake manifold.
  4. Detach the EVAP purge valve-to-intake manifold tube retainer.
  5. Disconnect the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor electrical connector.
  6. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor.
  7. Remove the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor.
  8. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid electrical connector.
  10. Disconnect the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid vacuum connector.
  11. Remove the 2 bolts and the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  12. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors.
  13. Remove the bolt and position the wiring harness connectors and bracket aside. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  14. NOTE: It is important to twist the spark plug wire boots while pulling upward to avoid possible damage to the spark plug wire. NOTE: Spark plug wires must be connected to the correct ignition coil terminal. Mark the spark plug wire locations before removing them. Disconnect the LH spark plug wires from the ignition coil.
  15. Detach the LH spark plug wire retainer from the ignition coil bracket.
  16. Detach the LH spark plug wire retainer from the valve cover stud bolt.
  17. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
  18. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the ignition coil bracket.
  19. Disconnect the radio interference capacitor electrical connector.
  20. Detach the accelerator cable bracket from the ignition coil.
  21. Remove the 4 bolts and position the ignition coil and bracket aside. To install, tighten the lower rear bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). To install, tighten the lower front bolt to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). To install, tighten the 2 upper bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  22. Disconnect the PCV hose from the PCV valve.
  23. Disconnect the PCV valve electrical connector.
  24. Disconnect the 3 LH fuel injector electrical connectors.
  25. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the LH valve cover stud bolt.
  26. Loosen the 6 bolt and grommet assemblies and remove the LH valve cover. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  27. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Clean the sealing surfaces and inspect the LH valve cover gasket. Install a new gasket if necessary.
  28. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-365369) .
  2. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  3. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-365365-S31852145612010070700000) .
  4. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  5. Remove the roller followers. For additional information, refer to «CAMSHAFT ROLLER FOLLOWER»(ref-365365-S01832068132010070700000) .
  6. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and remove the drive belt.
  7. Disconnect the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  8. NOTE: The coolant bypass hose will be removed with the thermostat housing. Move the coolant bypass hose clamp off the coolant pump outlet.
  9. Remove the 3 bolts and the thermostat housing and coolant bypass hose.
  10. Remove the 4 bolts and the fuel rail and fuel injector assembly.
  11. If equipped, remove the nut and position the A/C hose bracket aside.
  12. NOTE: Do not rotate the engine counterclockwise. Rotating the engine counterclockwise will result in damage to the damper crankshaft sensor speed wheel and incorrect timing of the engine. NOTE: The Crankshaft TDC Timing Tool must be installed on the damper and should contact the engine block. This positions the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC). Install the Crankshaft TDC Timing Tool. RH side
  13. Disconnect the generator electrical connections and detach the wiring harness retainers.
  14. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  15. Remove the 3 bolts and the generator bracket assembly.
  16. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  17. Detach the 2 wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness aside. Remove and discard the 2 retainers.
  18. Remove the 5 pushpins and the RH inner fender splash shield.
  19. Remove the RH hydraulic timing chain tensioner.
  20. Remove the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST MANIFOLD - RH»(ref-365365-S26384526682010070700000) .
  21. Remove the bolt and position the wiring harness bracket aside.
  22. Install the Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool and the Adapter for 303-564. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  23. NOTE: The RH camshaft sprocket is a LH-threaded bolt. Turning the bolt in the wrong direction can damage the bolt. Using the Torque Wrench Extension and the Camshaft Sprocket Nut Socket, remove the RH camshaft bolt.
  24. Remove the RH timing drive cassette upper bolt.
  25. NOTE: Remove the camshaft sprocket from the timing chain to gain clearance to remove the cylinder head. NOTE: Hold the timing chain and cassette with a rubber band to aid in removal and to prevent the timing chain from falling into the cylinder block. Remove the RH camshaft sprocket from the timing chain. Install a rubber band around the cassette and the timing chain. LH side
  26. Remove the 4 bolts and position the power steering and A/C compressor bracket aside.
  27. Remove the bolt and detach the wiring harness from the LH cylinder head.
  28. Remove the bolt and the oil level indicator tube.
  29. NOTE: It is important to twist the spark plug wire boots while pulling upward to avoid possible damage to the spark plug wire. NOTE: Spark plug wires must be connected to the correct spark plug. Mark the spark plug locations before removing them. Using the Spark Plug Wire Remover, disconnect the LH spark plug wires from the LH spark plugs and remove the ignition coil.
  30. Remove the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST MANIFOLD - LH»(ref-365365-S19429503372010070700000) .
  31. Remove the bolt and detach the ground strap.
  32. Remove the LH side hydraulic timing chain tensioner.
  33. Install the Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool and the Adapter for 303-564. Tighten the top clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  34. Remove the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.
  35. Remove the LH timing drive cassette upper bolt.
  36. NOTE: Remove the camshaft sprocket from the timing chain to gain clearance to remove the cylinder head. NOTE: Hold the timing chain and cassette with a rubber band to aid in removal and to prevent the timing chain from falling into the cylinder block. Remove the LH camshaft sprocket from the timing chain. Install a rubber band around the cassette and the timing chain. Both sides
  37. NOTE: To avoid damage to the timing chain cassette, an assistant will be required to help lift the cylinder head from the vehicle. NOTE: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are a torque-to-yield design and cannot be reused. Remove the cylinder heads. Remove the 10 cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in illustration. Discard all bolts. Remove and discard the head gasket.
  38. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Clean the cylinder head gasket surfaces with metal surface cleaner.
  39. Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Check the cylinder head distortion and the cylinder block distortion. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-365375) .

  1. Clean the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block. Make sure all coolant, oil or other foreign material is removed.
  2. Position the cylinder head gasket on the block. RH side
  3. NOTE: To avoid damage to the timing chain cassette, an assistant will be required to help position the cylinder head in the vehicle. NOTE: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are a torque-to-yield design and cannot be reused. Install the cylinder head. Install 8 new 12-mm bolts and tighten in the sequence shown in illustration in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  4. Install 2 new 8-mm bolts. Tighten to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft).
  5. Tighten the eight 12-mm bolts in the sequence shown in illustration in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten 90 degrees. Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
  6. NOTE: The camshaft gear must turn freely on the camshaft. DO NOT tighten the bolt at this time. Remove the rubber band. Install the camshaft sprocket and bolt.
  7. Install the RH timing drive cassette upper bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  8. Position the wiring harness bracket and install the bolt. Tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
  9. Install the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST MANIFOLD - RH»(ref-365365-S26384526682010070700000) .
  10. Install the RH inner fender splash shield and the 5 pushpins.
  11. Install 2 new wiring harness retainers and attach the wiring harness.
  12. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  13. Position the generator bracket and install the 3 bolts. Tighten to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft).
  14. Position the accessory drive belt tensioner and install the bolt. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  15. Connect the generator electrical connectors and install the nut. Attach the wiring harness retainers. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in). LH side
  16. NOTE: To avoid damage to the timing chain cassette, an assistant will be required to help position the cylinder head in the vehicle. NOTE: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are a torque-to-yield design and cannot be reused. Install the cylinder head. Install 8 new 12-mm bolts and tighten in the sequence shown in illustration in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  17. Install 2 new 8-mm bolts. Tighten to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft).
  18. Tighten the eight 12-mm bolts in the sequence shown in illustration in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten 90 degrees. Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
  19. NOTE: The camshaft gear must turn freely on the camshaft. DO NOT tighten the bolt at this time. Remove the rubber band. Install the camshaft sprocket and bolt.
  20. Install the LH timing drive cassette upper bolt. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
  21. Position the ground strap and install the bolt. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  22. Install the LH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST MANIFOLD - LH»(ref-365365-S19429503372010070700000) .
  23. NOTE: Apply silicone brake caliper grease and dielectric compound to the inside of the spark plug boots. Position the ignition coil in the engine compartment and connect the spark plug wires to the LH spark plugs.
  24. Install the oil level indicator tube and bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  25. Attach the wiring harness to the LH cylinder head and install the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  26. Position the power steering and A/C compressor bracket and install the 4 bolts. Tighten to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft). Both sides
  27. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and install the accessory drive belt.
  28. NOTE: The LH and RH camshafts must be retimed when either camshaft is disturbed. NOTE: Install the hydraulic chain tensioners during camshaft timing. Time the camshafts. For additional information, refer to «CAMSHAFT TIMING»(ref-365365-S23613813062010070700000) .
  29. NOTE: Inspect the thermostat housing O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal if necessary. Position the thermostat housing, making sure the bypass hose is connected to the coolant pump, and install the 3 bolts. Tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
  30. Position the bypass hose clamp.
  31. Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  32. Position the fuel rail and fuel injector assembly and install the 4 bolts. Tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
  33. Connect the spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-365420) .
  34. Install the roller followers. For additional information, refer to «CAMSHAFT ROLLER FOLLOWER»(ref-365365-S01832068132010070700000) .
  35. Install the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  36. Install the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-365365-S31852145612010070700000) .
  37. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-365369) .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-365408) .
  3. Remove the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to «CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL»(ref-365365-S07035214032010070700000) .
  4. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  5. Remove the nut and detach the A/C hose bracket from the front cover.
  6. Remove the 5 cylinder block cradle-to-front cover bolts.
  7. If equipped, remove the 4 bolts and position the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket aside.
  8. Disconnect the generator electrical connections and detach the wiring harness retainers.
  9. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  10. Remove the 3 bolts and the generator bracket.
  11. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  12. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
  13. Detach the 2 wiring harness anchors and position the wiring harness aside. Discard the 2 anchors.
  14. Remove the bolt and detach the wiring harness from the LH cylinder head.
  15. Position the bypass hose clamp off of the coolant pump outlet.
  16. Disconnect the heater hose from the coolant pump.
  17. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the coolant pump.
  18. NOTE: Note the positions of the stud bolts for installation reference.

  1. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the old front cover gasket and the silicone sealer. Clean and inspect the gasket mating surfaces. Use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep and a plastic scraping tool. Follow the directions on the packaging.
  2. Position the front cover gasket.
  3. NOTE: If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage. Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the oil pan and engine block mating surfaces.
  4. NOTE: If not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage. Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the front cover in 2 places.
  5. NOTE: Make sure the coolant bypass hose is attached to the coolant pump. NOTE: Make sure the stud bolts are installed in their original positions. Position the engine front cover and install the 5 bolts and 5 stud bolts. Tighten to 19 Nm (168 lb-in).
  6. Install the 5 cylinder block cradle-to-front cover bolts. Tighten bolts to 14 Nm (124 lb-in).
  7. Attach the wiring harness to the LH cylinder head and install the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  8. Position the bypass hose clamp.
  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the coolant pump.
  10. Connect the heater hose to the coolant pump.
  11. Install 2 new wiring harness anchors and position the CKP sensor wiring.
  12. Attach the wiring harness retainer.
  13. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  14. Position the A/C compressor and power steering bracket and install the 4 bolts. Tighten to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft).
  15. Position the generator bracket and install the 3 bolts. Tighten to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft).
  16. Position the accessory drive belt tensioner and install the bolt. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  17. Connect the generator electrical connectors and install the nut. Attach the wiring harness retainers. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
  18. If equipped, position the A/C tube bracket and install the nut. Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  19. Drain the engine oil. Install the drain plug when finished. Tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
  20. Install the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to «CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL»(ref-365365-S07035214032010070700000) .
  21. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
  22. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-365408) .
  23. Fill the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  1. Remove the hydraulic chain tensioner. To install, tighten to 44 Nm (32 lb-ft).

  5. Remove the bolt and position the camshaft sprocket aside. LH side

  5. Install the exhaust manifold-to-EGR valve tube. Tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).

  13. Remove the bolt and position the transmission cooler tube bracket aside.

  4. Position a new gasket and the cylinder block cradle. Install the outer 20 bolts and 2 nuts finger-tight.
  5. Install the 2 cylinder block cradle rear bolts finger-tight.
  6. Install the 2 transmission-to-cylinder block cradle bolts. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  7. Tighten the outer 20 bolts and 2 nuts. Tighten the nuts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Tighten the bolts to 14 Nm (124 lb-in).
  8. Tighten the 2 cylinder block cradle rear Torx bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  9. Tighten the 8 set screws. Tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
  10. Install the 2 silver-colored bolts and new washer seals finger-tight.
  11. Install the 6 remaining inner bolts finger-tight.
  12. Tighten the 8 inner bolts in the sequence shown in illustration in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
  13. Position the oil pump screen and pickup tube and install the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). 4WD vehicles
  14. NOTE: Any time bolts, washers, spacers or nuts are loosened in the front axle housing for any reason, install new components to prevent damage. Raise the front axle housing into place and install new bolts and nuts. Tighten to 66 Nm (49 lb-ft). Remove the jack.

  1. NOTE: The new replacement crankshaft rear seal comes with a speedy sleeve. The speedy sleeve must be installed with the crankshaft rear seal. NOTE: Be sure the crankshaft rear sealing surface is clean and free of any rust or corrosion. To clean the crankshaft rear seal surface area, use extra-fine emery cloth or extra-fine 0000 steel wool with metal surface prep. Lubricate the crankshaft rear seal with clean engine oil.

  3. Position the crankshaft rear seal with speedy sleeve on the Adapter for 303-579 and the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Screws.
  4. Using the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer, install the crankshaft rear seal with speedy sleeve.
  5. Install the crankshaft spacer.
  6. Install the spacer plate.
  7. Install the flexplate or flywheel. For additional information, refer to «FLEXPLATE»(ref-365365-S33061402972010070700000) or «FLYWHEEL»(ref-365365-S35729762582010070700000) .

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-365408) .
  2. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  3. Remove the A/C compressor and power steering bracket bolt and use it to install the Engine Lifting Bracket. Tighten to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft).
  4. Remove the heater tube assembly front bolt and use it to install the Engine Lifting Bracket. Tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). LH side
  5. Remove the 2 LH engine support insulator-to-LH engine bracket nuts. To install, tighten to 110 Nm (81 lb-ft). RH side
  6. Remove the 2 RH engine support insulator-to-RH engine bracket nuts. To install, tighten to 110 Nm (81 lb-ft). Both sides
  7. Install the Engine Support Bar and the 2 Adapters for 303-290A and raise the engine until the engine brackets clear the engine support insulator studs. LH side
  8. Remove the 3 pushpins and the inner fender splash shield.
  9. If equipped, remove the LH front coil spring. For additional information, refer to «FRONT SUSPENSION - REAR WHEEL DRIVE (RWD)»(ref-365384) .
  10. NOTE: Some vehicles are equipped with a 2-piece dual converter Y-pipe (LH and RH). If equipped with a front axle, remove the dual converter Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-365376) .
  11. If equipped, secure the axle housing to a suitable jack.
  12. NOTE: Any time bolts, washers, spacers or nuts are loosened in the front axle housing for any reason, install new components to prevent damage. If equipped, remove and discard the 3 front axle housing bolts and nuts. To install, tighten to 66 Nm (49 lb-ft).
  13. Lower the front axle housing approximately 25 mm (1 in).
  14. Remove the LH engine support insulator-to-frame nut. To install, tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
  15. Remove the LH engine support insulator.
  16. If necessary, remove the wiring harness bracket from the LH engine bracket.
  17. If necessary, remove the 4 bolts and the LH engine bracket. To install, tighten to 62 Nm (46 lb-ft). RH side
  18. If equipped, remove the RH front coil spring. For additional information, refer to «FRONT SUSPENSION - REAR WHEEL DRIVE (RWD)»(ref-365384) .
  19. Remove the RH engine support insulator-to-frame nut. To install, tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
  20. Remove the RH engine support insulator.
  21. If necessary, remove the 3 bolts and the RH engine bracket. To install, tighten to 62 Nm (46 lb-ft). Both sides

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-365408) .
  2. NOTE: If the engine is repaired or replaced because of upper engine failure, typically including valve or piston damage, check the intake manifold for metal debris. If metal debris is found, install a new intake manifold. Failure to follow these instructions can result in engine damage. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-365365-S31852145612010070700000) .
  3. NOTE: If used as a leverage device, the fuel rail may be damaged. Care must be taken when working around the fuel rail. Disconnect the fuel tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-365420) . Detach the fuel tube from the bracket.
  4. Using the Spark Plug Wire Remover, disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  5. Detach the spark plug wire retainer from the LH valve cover stud and remove the ignition coil, bracket and LH spark plug wires as an assembly.
  6. Detach the spark plug wire retainer from the RH valve cover stud and remove the RH spark plug wires.
  7. NOTE: Mark the hinge locations for installation reference. Remove the hood.
  8. If the vehicle is equipped with A/C, discharge and recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(ref-365378) .
  9. Disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  10. Remove the fan blade. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  11. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) housing cover.
  12. Remove the radiator. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  13. If the vehicle is equipped with A/C, disconnect the A/C field coil electrical connector.
  14. If the vehicle is equipped with A/C, disconnect the A/C high pressure switch electrical connector.
  15. If the vehicle is equipped with A/C, remove the bolt and position the A/C hoses aside.
  16. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-365381) .
  17. Disconnect the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) hose from the lower power steering pump fitting.
  18. NOTE: The battery is removed for clarity. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the power steering fluid reservoir.
  19. Remove the 4 power steering pump and A/C compressor bracket bolts and the bracket, the A/C compressor, if equipped, the power steering pump and the power steering reservoir as an assembly.
  20. Disconnect the generator electrical connections and detach the 2 wiring harness retainers.
  21. Remove the bolt and position the generator wiring away from the engine.
  22. Disconnect the 2 engine wiring harness electrical connectors.
  23. Remove the engine ground wire nut.
  24. Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) hose from the purge valve and remove the hose.
  25. Remove the crankcase breather hose. Disconnect the 2 vacuum hoses (1 shown in illustration) and remove the vacuum hose harness.
  26. NOTE: The heater hose will be removed with the engine. Disconnect the heater hose.
  27. Disconnect the heater hose. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission
  28. Remove the transmission level indicator tube nut. All vehicles
  29. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to «STARTING SYSTEM»(ref-365425) .
  30. NOTE: Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicle shown in illustration, Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicle similar. Remove the bolt and detach the wiring harness bracket. Disconnect the oil pressure switch electrical connector. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission
  31. Disconnect the RH Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) electrical connector, remove the nut and route the bracket and wiring harness over the transmission.
  32. Disconnect the LH CMS and the transmission electrical connectors. Detach the wiring harness retainers.
  33. Remove the bolt and position the transmission cooling tube bracket aside.
  34. NOTE: Rotating the crankshaft pulley bolt counterclockwise could cause a reduction in clamp load on the crankshaft pulley and timing sprocket, which may cause severe engine damage. Remove the 4 torque converter nuts. Vehicles equipped with a manual transmission
  35. Disconnect the RH CMS electrical connector and remove the nut. Route the bracket and wiring harness over the transmission.
  36. Disconnect the LH CMS and transmission electrical connectors. Detach the wiring harness retainers. All vehicles
  37. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainer from the crossmember. Make sure all the electrical connectors and wiring harness retainers are disconnected and route the transmission wiring harness to the top of the engine.
  38. Drain the engine oil.
  39. Install the oil drain plug. Tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
  40. Remove and discard the oil filter.
  41. Disconnect the LH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  42. Disconnect the RH HO2S electrical connector.
  43. NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar. Remove the 4 exhaust manifold-to-dual converter Y-pipe nuts.
  44. If equipped with A/C, remove the A/C tube bracket nut and position it aside.
  45. NOTE: Automatic transmission shown in illustration, manual transmission similar. Remove the 8 transmission-to-engine bolts.
  46. Remove the 2 RH engine insulator nuts.
  47. Remove the 2 LH engine insulator nuts.
  48. Install the Engine Lifting Bracket on the LH side of the engine. Tighten to 37 Nm (27 lb-ft).
  49. Remove the heater tube front bolt.
  50. Install the Engine Lifting Bracket using the previously removed bolt. Tighten to 37 Nm (27 lb-ft).
  51. Install the Spreader Bar to the Engine Lifting Brackets.
  52. Position a floor jack under the bell housing of the transmission.
  53. Attach a Heavy Duty Floor Crane to the Spreader Bar and remove the engine.

  1. Install the engine, remove the Heavy Duty Lifting Crane and the Spreader Bar.
  2. Remove the Engine Lifting Brackets.
  3. Install the 2 LH engine insulator nuts. Tighten to 110 Nm (81 lb-ft).
  4. Install the 2 RH engine insulator nuts. Tighten to 110 Nm (81 lb-ft).
  5. NOTE: Automatic transmission shown in illustration, manual transmission similar. Install the 8 transmission-to-engine bolts. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  6. If equipped with A/C, position the A/C tube bracket and install the nut. Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).

  8. Connect the RH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  9. Connect the LH HO2S electrical connector.
  10. Install a new engine oil filter. Tighten to 13 Nm (115 lb-in).
  11. Route the transmission wiring harness from the top of the engine to the transmission.
  12. Attach the wiring harness to the crossmember and connect the electrical connector. Vehicles equipped with a manual transmission
  13. Connect the transmission and LH Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) electrical connectors and attach the wiring harness retainers.
  14. Route the wiring harness over the transmission and position the bracket on the stud. Install the nut and connect the RH CMS electrical connector. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission

  17. Connect the transmission and LH Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) electrical connectors. Attach the wiring harness retainers.
  18. Route the wiring harness over the transmission and position the bracket on the stud. Install the nut and connect the RH CMS electrical connector. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  19. Position the transmission fluid level indicator tube and install the nut. Tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). All vehicles
  20. NOTE: Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicle shown in illustration, Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicle similar. Install the engine wiring harness retainer and bolt and connect the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch electrical connector. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  21. Install the starter motor. For additional information, refer to «STARTING SYSTEM»(ref-365425) .
  22. Connect the heater hose.
  23. Connect the heater hose.
  24. Position the vacuum hose harness and connect the 2 vacuum hoses (1 shown in illustration). Install the crankcase breather hose.
  25. Connect the vapor hose to the purge valve.
  26. Position the ground wire and install the nut. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  27. Connect the 2 engine wiring harness electrical connectors.
  28. Position the wiring harness and install the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  29. Connect the generator wiring and install the generator terminal nut. Attach the 2 wiring harness retainers. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
  30. Position the A/C compressor and power steering bracket and install the 4 bolts. Tighten to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft).
  31. NOTE: The battery is removed for clarity. Connect the power steering return hose to the power steering fluid reservoir.
  32. Connect the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) hose to the lower power steering pump fitting.
  33. If equipped with A/C, position the A/C compressor manifold and install the bolt. Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  34. If equipped with A/C, connect the A/C high pressure switch electrical connector.
  35. If equipped with A/C, connect the A/C field coil electrical connector.
  36. Install the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-365381) .
  37. NOTE: Do not fill the cooling system at this time. Install the radiator. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  38. Install the air cleaner housing cover.
  39. Connect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
  40. Install the fan blade. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(ref-365412) .
  41. NOTE: Align the hood with the hinge location marks made during removal. Install the hood and the 4 bolts. Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
  42. Position the RH spark plug wires and attach the retainer to the RH valve cover stud. Coat the inside of the spark plug wire boots with silicone brake caliper grease and dielectric compound and connect the spark plug wires to the correct spark plugs.
  43. Position the ignition coil, the bracket and the LH spark plug wires and attach the spark plug wire retainer to the LH vale cover stud. Coat the inside of the spark plug wire boots with silicone brake caliper grease and dielectric compound and connect the spark plug wires to the correct spark plugs.
  44. Connect the fuel tube spring lock couplings. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-365420) .
