Removal and Installation

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-365369) .
  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-365412-S10217562462010070700000) .
  3. NOTE: Make sure that the block heater wiring is routed and secured away from rotating or hot components, or damage to the wiring can occur. Disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
  4. Remove the block heater. To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  6. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-365412-S10217562462010070700000) .

  3. Disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
  4. NOTE: Do not loosen the screw more than necessary for removal. Loosen the block heater screw and twist and slide the block heater to release the retainer clip. Discard the retainer clip and remove the block heater. To install, tighten to 4 Nm (35 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

ITEM DESCRIPTION CHART

  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-365413) .
  3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
  4. Remove the 3 bolts, the thermostat outlet housing and the thermostat. Inspect the O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal if necessary. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-365413) .
  3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
  4. Remove the coolant bypass hose.
  5. Disconnect the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  6. Remove the 3 bolts and the thermostat housing. Inspect the O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal if necessary. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-365412-S10217562462010070700000) .
  2. Disconnect the lower radiator hose.
  3. Disconnect the EGR valve heater hose.
  4. Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Clean and inspect the gasket, install a new gasket if necessary.

  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-365412-S10217562462010070700000) .
  3. Remove the drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-365381) .
  4. Remove the 3 bolts and the coolant pump pulley. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  5. Remove the 3 bolts and the coolant pump. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  6. NOTE: Lubricate the coolant pump O-ring seal with clean coolant. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 4.0L»(ref-365412-S31872019542010070700000) .
  2. Remove the fan shroud. For additional information, refer to «COOLING FAN SHROUD - 4.0L»(ref-365412-S33458017472010070700000) .
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley. To install, tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft).
  4. Slide the coolant bypass hose clamp up from the coolant pump.
  5. Disconnect the heater hose from the coolant pump.
  6. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the coolant pump.
  7. Remove the 4 bolts and the coolant pump pulley. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  8. Remove the 12 bolts, the coolant pump and the gasket. Discard the gasket. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  9. NOTE: Use care when cleaning the water pump-to-engine block gasket mating surfaces. Gouges in the aluminum could form leak paths. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. NOTE: To avoid disturbing the transmission or cooler fittings, use a back-up wrench.
  2. Connect the transmission cooling tubes to the radiator.
  3. All vehicles
C9 Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission
  1. WARNING: Do not stand in line with or near the engine cooling fan blade when revving the engine. A damaged fan can separate during operation. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
  2. Operate the engine for several minutes and check the hoses and connections for leaks.
  3. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission
  1. If equipped with A/C, disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-365408) .
  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-365413) .
  3. If equipped with A/C, disconnect the electric cooling fan electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 3 bolts and position the power steering fluid reservoir aside. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  5. Remove the 2 cooling fan shroud mounting bolts and lift the shroud and, if equipped, the electric cooling fan assembly from the vehicle. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  6. If necessary, remove the 3 bolts and the electric cooling fan. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  7. If necessary, remove the 2 bolts, the electric cooling fan bracket and the 3 electric cooling fan nuts from the fan shroud. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Remove the front coolant outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «COOLANT OUTLET PIPE - 2.3L, FRONT»(ref-365412-S17801145602010070700000) .
  3. Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 5R44E AND 5R55E»(ref-365367) for automatic transmissions or «MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION»(ref-365417) for manual transmissions.
  4. NOTE: Use a block of wood to protect the oil pan, or the oil pan may be damaged. Support the engine with an appropriate jack stand.
  5. Disconnect the coolant bypass hose from the rear coolant outlet pipe.
  6. Remove the bolts, the rear coolant outlet pipe and the gasket. Discard the gasket. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  7. NOTE: Clean the gasket mating surfaces and install a new gasket. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

ITEM DESCRIPTION CHART

  1. WARNING: Always allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system. Do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap when the engine is operating or the cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one-half turn counterclockwise. When the pressure is released, remove the pressure relief cap.
  2. Using hose clamp pliers, clamp the EGR valve heater hose.
  3. Using a suitable suction device, siphon the coolant from the degas bottle.
  4. If equipped, remove the speed control servo bolt and position the servo aside. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
  5. Disconnect the EGR valve heater hose. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
  6. Disconnect the engine coolant and radiator vent hoses.
  7. Remove the bolt, the nut and the degas bottle. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  9. Fill the degas bottle. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - 2.3L»(ref-365412-S10217562462010070700000) for the recommended coolant mixture and fill level.

  2. If equipped, remove the speed control servo bolt and position the servo aside. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).
  3. Disconnect the windshield washer hose.
  4. Disconnect the windshield washer motor electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the overflow hose at the coolant expansion tank and drain the coolant into a suitable container.
  6. Remove the 2 bolts, the 2 nuts and the coolant expansion tank. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
