GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

The electronic ignition (EI) system for the 2.3L engine consists of the following components

  1. Ignition coil
  2. Spark plugs
  3. Spark plug wires
  4. Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
  5. Camshaft position (CMP) sensor

The CKP sensor

  1. is a variable reluctance sensor.
  2. is mounted on the engine front cover.
  3. is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel located on the crankshaft pulley and damper.
  4. provides ignition timing and crankshaft speed (rpm) to the powertrain control module (PCM).

Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS for removal and installation of the CKP sensor.

The ignition coil

  1. is controlled by the PCM.
  2. fires 2 spark plugs simultaneously.

The spark plug

  1. ignites the fuel and air mixture.

The spark plug wire

  1. carries high voltage pulses from the ignition coil to the spark plugs.

Refer to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES for diagnosis and testing of the ignition system.
