Engine Cooling System: Removal & Installation Ford Ranger II

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding - 3.0L, 4.0L»(ref-268733-S35335947772007102600000) in this article.
2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(ref-268732) article.
3. Remove the bolt and the throttle body (TB) cover.
4. Remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat outlet housing.
5. Detach the alternator wiring pin-type retainer.
6. Remove the bolts, the thermostat outlet housing and the thermostat. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
7. Discard the gasket and clean the sealing surfaces.
8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(ref-268732) article.
3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
4. Remove the bolts, the thermostat outlet housing and the thermostat. Inspect the O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal if necessary. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(ref-268732) article.
3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
4. Remove the coolant bypass hose.
5. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
6. Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing. Inspect the O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal if necessary. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. The thermostat and thermostat housing are serviced as an assembly.

1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding - 2.3L»(ref-268733-S21721443632007102600000) in this article.
2. Disconnect the lower radiator hose.
3. Disconnect the EGR valve heater hose.
4. Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Clean and inspect the gasket, install a new gasket if necessary.

Note. The bypass tube and the lower radiator hose are a molded, one-piece assembly.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-268709) article.
2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding - 3.0L, 4.0L»(ref-268733-S35335947772007102600000) in this article.
3. Disconnect the bypass tube from the water pump.
4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the engine.
5. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator and remove the lower radiator hose.
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding - 2.3L»(ref-268733-S21721443632007102600000) in this article.
3. Remove the drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-268742) article.
4. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump pulley. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
5. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

REMOVAL

2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(ref-268732) article.
3. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-268742) article.
4. Remove the fan blade and the fan shroud. For additional information, refer to «Cooling Fan Shroud - 3.0L, 4.0L»(ref-268733-S03046127522007102600000) in this article.
5. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump pulley.
6. Disconnect the heater hose.
7. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer.
8. Remove the nut and detach the battery cable bracket.
9. Remove the side stud bolts from the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
10. Disconnect the bypass hose.
11. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
12. Remove the front bolts and position the A/C compressor mounting bracket aside.
13. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump.
14. Clean the sealing surfaces.

Scheme 11

1. Position the coolant pump and loosely install the 10 bolts and 2 stud bolts. Tighten bolts 1-7 in the sequence shown to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Tighten bolts 8-12 in the sequence shown to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
2. Position the A/C compressor mounting bracket and install the front bolts. Tighten to 51 Nm (38 lb-ft).
3. Position the accessory drive belt tensioner and install the bolt. Tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).
4. Connect the bypass hose.
5. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket side stud bolts. Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
6. Position the battery cable bracket and install the nut. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
7. Install the coolant pump pulley. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
8. Install the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(ref-268742) article.
9. Attach the wiring harness retainer.
10. Connect the heater hose.
11. Install the fan blade and fan shroud. For additional information, refer to «Cooling Fan Shroud - 3.0L, 4.0L»(ref-268733-S03046127522007102600000) in this article.
12. Install the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(ref-268732) article.
13. Fill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding - 3.0L, 4.0L»(ref-268733-S35335947772007102600000) in this article.

Scheme 12

2. Remove the fan shroud. For additional information, refer to «Cooling Fan Shroud - 3.0L, 4.0L»(ref-268733-S03046127522007102600000) in this article.
3. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley. To install, tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft).
4. Slide the coolant bypass hose clamp up from the coolant pump.
5. Disconnect the heater hose from the coolant pump.
6. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the coolant pump.
7. Remove the 4 bolts and the coolant pump pulley. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
8. Remove the bolts, the coolant pump and the gasket. Discard the gasket. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
9. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. If equipped with A/C, disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-268774) article.
2. Remove the air intake tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(ref-268732) article.
3. If equipped with A/C, disconnect the electric cooling fan electrical connector.
4. Remove the bolts and position the power steering fluid reservoir aside. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
5. Remove the 2 cooling fan shroud mounting bolts and lift the shroud and, if equipped, the electric cooling fan assembly from the vehicle. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
6. If necessary, remove the bolts and the electric cooling fan. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
7. If necessary, remove the bolts, the electric cooling fan bracket and the electric cooling fan nuts from the fan shroud. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. Remove the bolts and separate the fan from the fan clutch. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. Disconnect the radiator upper hose from the front coolant outlet pipe.
3. Disconnect the engine coolant vent hose from the front coolant outlet pipe.
4. Disconnect the heater hose from the front coolant outlet pipe.
5. Remove the oil indicator tube-to-front coolant outlet pipe bolt. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
6. Remove the bolts and remove the front coolant outlet pipe. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 18

1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding - 2.3L»(ref-268733-S21721443632007102600000) in this article.
2. Remove the front coolant outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «Coolant Outlet Pipe - 2.3L, Front»(ref-268733-S01002869442007102600000) in this article.
3. Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 5R44E AND 5R55E»(ref-268740) article for automatic transmissions or «MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION»(ref-268749) article for manual transmissions.
4. Support the engine with an appropriate jack stand.
5. Disconnect the coolant bypass hose from the rear coolant outlet pipe.
6. Remove the bolts, the rear coolant outlet pipe and the gasket. Discard the gasket. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 19

1. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one half turn counterclockwise. When the pressure is released, remove the pressure relief cap.
2. Using hose clamp pliers, clamp the EGR valve heater hose.
3. Using a suitable suction device, siphon the coolant from the degas bottle.
4. If equipped, remove the speed control servo bolt and position the servo aside. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
5. Disconnect the EGR valve heater hose. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
6. Disconnect the engine coolant and radiator vent hoses.
7. Remove the bolt, the nut and the degas bottle. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
9. Fill the degas bottle. Refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding - 2.3L»(ref-268733-S21721443632007102600000) for the recommended coolant mixture and fill level.

Scheme 20

1. Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(ref-268732) article.
2. If equipped, remove the speed control servo bolt and position the servo aside. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
3. Disconnect the windshield washer hose.
4. Disconnect the windshield washer motor electrical connector.
5. Disconnect the overflow hose at the coolant expansion tank and drain the coolant into a suitable container.
6. Remove the 2 bolts, the 2 nuts and the coolant expansion tank. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
