Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding - 2.3L

Partial Drain

Note. The addition of Cooling System Stop Leak Pellets darkens Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant from yellow to golden tan.

Note. Less than 80% of the coolant capacity can be recovered with the engine in the vehicle. Dirty, rusty or contaminated coolant requires replacement.

1. Remove the degas bottle cap.
2. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. Drain the coolant.
3. Close the radiator draincock when finished draining. Tighten to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).

Complete Drain

1. Remove the degas bottle cap.
2. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. Drain the coolant.
3. Close the radiator draincock when finished. Tighten to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).
4. Place a suitable container below the radiator lower hose and disconnect the hose from the thermostat housing.

Filling and bleeding procedure for use with partial drain

1. Make sure the radiator draincock is completely closed.
2. Fill the system through the degas bottle cap to 15 mm (0.590 in) above the maximum fill level.
3. Install the degas bottle cap.
4. Start the engine and hold at 2,500 RPM engine speed for approximately 8 minutes until the thermostat opens.
5. Maintain 2,500 RPM engine speed for an additional 3 minutes.
6. Increase engine speed to 4,000 RPM and hold for 5 seconds.
7. Return engine speed to 2,500 RPM and hold for an additional 3 minutes.
8. Stop the engine and check for leaks.

Filling and bleeding procedure for use with complete drain

1. Install the radiator lower hose and close the radiator draincock.
2. Fill the system through the degas bottle cap to the maximum fill level.
3. Start the engine and run for approximately 10 seconds at 2,500 RPM to prime the heater circuit then turn the engine off.
4. Top off the coolant level to 15 mm (0.6 in) above the max fill level.
5. Install the degas bottle cap.
6. Start the engine and hold at 2,500 RPM engine speed for approximately 8 minutes until the thermostat opens.
7. Maintain 2,500 RPM engine speed for an additional 3 minutes.
8. Increase engine speed to 4,000 RPM and hold for 5 seconds.
9. Return engine speed to 2,500 RPM and hold for an additional 3 minutes.
10. Repeat the previous 2 steps.
11. Stop the engine and check for leaks.
12. Verify correct fluid level after engine cools for 20 minutes. Top off the degas bottle to MAX line.

Scheme 22

1. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the radiator cap one half to one turn counterclockwise to the first stop on the filler neck. When the pressure has been released, remove the radiator cap.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-268709) article.
3. Remove the bolts and the air deflector.
4. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. Drain the coolant.
5. Close the radiator draincock when finished. Tighten to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).

Cooling System Flushing

Material

2. Remove the thermostat. For additional information, refer to «Thermostat Housing - 2.3L»(ref-268733-S08993170712007102600000) , «Thermostat - 3.0L (2V)»(ref-268733-S15796502182007102600000) or «Thermostat - 4.0L SOHC»(ref-268733-S22631211542007102600000) in this article.
3. Install the thermostat housing without the thermostat.
4. Use an appropriate cooling system flusher to flush the engine and radiator. Use premium cooling system flush.

3. Disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
4. Loosen the block heater screw and twist and slide the block heater to release the retainer clip. Discard the retainer clip and remove the block heater.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
